How Quickly Can You Recover?
The Secret Factor Of Peak Performance
When Most People Think about Peak Performance, they Immediately think...
Performance.
Skill.
Our Ability to Accomplish Something.
Indeed, these are All Important Aspects of Peak Performance.
You Must Perform.
If You Cannot Perform, then you cannot worry about Peak Performance.
But there are Two Other Important Factors to Peak Performance.
The First I Spoke About Yesterday...
Momentum, which is Created by Consistency.
And this is the Key...
Consistency.
How Often Can You Perform?
How Consistent Can You Become?
What Determines the Level of Your Consistency?
Recovery.
How Well You Can Recover.
But Perhaps More Importantly...
It is about How Quickly You Can Recover.
Many People Lose the Opportunity to Truly Reach Peak Performance because they are Unable to Properly Recover.
This Factor becomes Either a Secret Weapon to Peak Performance...
Or the Greatest Limiter to Peak Performance.
So How Quickly Can You Recover?
For Some People, they Take Days.
Others Take Weeks.
Then, some have Years where they Struggle to Recover.
The Longer Your Recovery...
The Further You Will Be From Your Peak Performance.
If You Want to Reach Your Potential...
You want to Minimize Your Recovery Time While Maximizing Your Recovery Success.
But How Quickly can we Expect to Recover in Reality.
Well, let me Tell You about my Weekend.
I had Three Races Set Up on My Calendar.
Saturday, I had a 10k (6.2 Mile) Race with 26 Obstacles.
Obstacles include things like...
Carrying 80 - 100 lb Boulders...
Jumping Over 7' Walls...
Throwing Spears...
Those Kinds of Obstacles.
Then, Today I had been Scheduled for 2 Races.
A 10k (6.2 Mile) Run.
A 5k (3.1 Mile) Race with 20 Obstacles.
But the Question is...
How Did It Go?
Well, to be Honest, It Started Off Horribly Right Off the Bat.
Friday Ended up being Busy.
In the End...
I Only Got 4 Hours and 26 Minutes of Sleep.
My HRV was Low, and My RHR was High.
It was Not Good.
Then came the Race.
Not a Great Performance to be Honest.
I Successfully Completed 22/26 Obstacles, so just over 84%.
Good, Not Great.
I was in the 67% of Competitors.
Fairly Average.
But if You Look at My WHOOP Strain Level, an Indicator of How Much Stress My Body Took from Activities throughout the Day...
You'll See that My Bodily Stress Hit 20.6 Out of 21.
But it gets Worse.
After the Race, I began to have a Horrible Migraine.
I became Nasueas.
I Threw Up.
I was a Mess.
The Bodily Weariness Had Taken Its Toll on Me.
Now...
I Still Had Not One, but Two Races Planned for the Next Day.
What Would Most People Do In This Scenario?
They are Exhausted.
They Pushed Themselves Hard and Finished the Goal.
Maybe Not Pretty, but Still Finished.
They Feel Awful and Sick.
What Do They Do?
Most People, considered Reasonable, would Give Up Anything the Next Day.
Would Consider It A Lost Cause.
Better Luck Next Time, Right?
Well...
Perhaps I'm Unreasonable...
Or Perhaps I'm Just Attuned to My Ability to Recover.
This is what I Did.
I Took a Nap - a bit by Accident, but I Caught 3 Hours.
I Focused on My Nutrition to Recoup Electrolytes and Calories.
Worked on Calming My Body Down So It Could Heal Itself.
Then, I made Sure to Get Enough Sleep for Today.
I Woke Up...
I Went to the Races.
The Results?
The 10k (6.2 Mile) Run was First.
Despite the Previous Day...
I Ranked in the Top 9% of Racers.
Finished in 1 Hour and 5 Minutes.
Not Bad for a Course with 823 ft. of Elevation.
A Personal Record on that Course.
Pretty Great Considering the Condition I was in Less than 24 Hours Prior.
But I still had the 5k (3.1 Mile) Race with 20 Obstacles.
How Did I Do after Everything Else that I had Done?
I only had 1 Hour and 45 Minutes to Recover from the Previous Race.
I Cooled Down.
Texas Heat is Intense, and can Overwhelm the Body Quickly.
Got some Water.
A Few Calories to Replish Stores.
Calmed the Body Down.
Then, I Went.
I Finished in the Top 23%.
Completed 18/20 Obstacles, which is 90% Success.
Definitely Not my Best Performance...
But Considering I got a Personal Record on the Previous Race...
Right Before this Race...
And had a Terrible Time the Day Before...
I can Say that I am Pretty Happy.
I Ended the Day at 20.7 Strain on my WHOOP Device.
Now, this is what is Interesting...
If I had Given Up when Most People Would...
I Would have Never Gotten My Personal Record...
I Would have Been Two Races Behind on My Goals for the Year...
Plus, I would have been at Home Beating Myself Up.
Would it have been Understandable to Give Up?
Absolutely.
Yet, I Know the Potential I Hold.
I Would Have Known, Deep Down, that I Could Have Still Done the Races.
The Version of Me that Reaches Their Potential would have Known that I had Given Up on Myself...
Despite having the Resources and Capabilities to Overcome the Challenges.
But I Did Not Give Up.
I Stood My Ground.
I Looked At The Obstacles...
Physical, Mental, and Emotional.
I Figured Out the Plan.
I Acted on the Plan.
I Recovered.
I Performed.
This is not something "Special" About Me.
It is Something that Any Human can Accomplish.
We are Capable of So Much More as Humans than We Truly Realize.
Most People Have Not Even Scratched the Surface of their Potential.
But...
For Us to Reach Our Potential...
To Attain Peak Performance...
To Become Consistent and Build Momentum...
We Must Understand How to Recover.
What Stops Most People from Reaching their Potential is Not their Ability to Perform...
But their Shortfalls in Recovering Properly.
Not Just in Recovering Overall...
But in Figuring Out How to Maximize Recovery Quickly.
Now, I have had a Long Weekend, and I Need to Recover.
I Will be Back, in Full Action, Bringing You Tomorrow's Article.
