Why The Least Likely People Sometimes Redefine Professions
Understanding Where Sageship Begins
There are Moments in History where Individuals Completely Redefine Professions...
These are Moments where Sageship Begins.
But what is Interesting...
Is that within Some of these Moments...
The Individuals who Redefine Certain Professions...
Are People That No One Would Have Ever Guessed.
The Wright Brothers ran a Bicycle Repair and Manufacturing Shop before they Redefined Aviation.
Florence Nightingale was expected to Live in Upper-Class Leisure before she Pursued Nursing, Considered “Below” Her Station, and Elevated and Redefined the Profession Worldwide.
Just Recently, Jane Goodall passed away...
Who went into a Profession that Discouraged Women from Participating...
Without having Attained a Degree or Scientific Training...
Taught the World the Complex Social Lives of Chimpanzees and Redefined how People looked at Animal Rights and the Environment.
All of these Individuals...
Were Never Expected to Accomplish Anything of Significance in these Professions...
But They Did.
Against All Odds...
They Impacted their Professions to Incredible Degress.
Truly, they Became Sages of those Professions.
But Why?
How is it that These Unlikely Individuals Were the Ones to Redefine their Industries...
When in the Same Periods of Time...
There were More Qualified Individuals...
Within those Professions for Longer Periods of Time...
With Better Resources...
And Better Opportunities...
Yet they Failed to Create the Same Level of Impact?
How Did These People Break Through...
When Others Seemed Better Suited and Positioned?
What Was Different?
You can Narrow it Down to One Word...
Perspective.
One of the Defining Characteristics of a Sage is that they either have a Different Perspective, or they Actively Seek Different Perspectives.
They Look at their Professions Asking Questions that Others Fail to Ask...
What If We Are Looking At This Wrong?
The Problem that Occurs in Every Profession Over Time...
Is that People Begin to See Everything the Same Way.
There is a Certain Perception that is the Norm within a Profession...
And People are Taught to Look at that Profession through that Lens.
The Problem...
Is that the Lens Usually has Flaws.
Now, these Flaws are Often Unintentional...
But they Develop Over Time based on What Information Currently Exists.
The Flaws in these Lenses then Become Blind Spots.
When New Individuals Follow the “Tried and True” Paths, They Learn the Same Blind Spots...
Again, often Without Realizing It...
And these Blind Spots Prevent them from Moving Professions Forward.
The Profession becomes Stuck because Nearly Everyone is Looking through the Same Perspective.
Which Becomes the Opportunity for the Sage.
Where Most People Look Through the Same Perspective...
The Sage Begins to Test and Look at Different Perspectives.
They Begin to Look at Problems and Ideas in New and Novel Ways.
In their Pursuit to See Professions in a Different Light...
They Discover Something...
A Perspective that Others Have and Continue to Miss.
It is Through This New Lens that They Begin to Redefine their Profession.
It Reveals Key Insights that are Invisible through the Old Lens...
And With those Insights...
The Sage Begins to Reveal New Innovations and Solutions that Others Never Considered...
Because they were Literally Unable to See It through the Old Lens.
This Phenomenon is also Why the Least Likely People often Rise to the Top of a Profession...
When they Enter Into the Profession...
Their Lens Is Different By Default.
When Others Nod Their Heads in Acceptance...
The Least Likely People Ask Questions.
In Some Ways...
They Do Not Know Well Enough What Is Or Is Not To Be Questioned...
Which Allows Them To Ask Questions Others Never Consider...
And Those Questions Become the Starting Points for New Lenses of Reference.
Then...
Once they Ask the Right Question...
They Begin to become Unable to See the Profession through the Old Lens.
Their New Lens Drives them to New Insights that they are Unable to Ignore.
They Follow These Insights...
Until they have Redefined the Profession...
And No One Else is Able to Ignore their Lens.
Others are Forced to Adapt and Change based on the Insights from the New Perspective...
And the Unlikely Person Leads the Journey Forward into a New Future.
If Your Goal is to Change the Future...
You will Need to Redefine Your Profession.
This is True in Absolutely All Professions.
So You will Need to Find a New Lens that Others have Never Considered...
And From that New Lens...
Combined with Results and Evidence...
You will Begin to Make Progress on the Path to Sageship.
