Why The Extremely High Rate Of Toxic Workplaces Is Unsurprising

Plus The Stats That Show Why It Will Get Worse

I Heard Some Statistics Today about the Levels of Toxicity of Today’s Workplace.

From an Outside Perspective, they May Sound High...

80% of People say their Workplace is Toxic.

Causes Include a Variety of Reasons...

Toxic Work Culture...

Bad Management...

Lack of Growth Opportunities...

Increased Workload...

Staffing Shortages...

Plus More or Combinations of these Different Factors.

Along with this...

93% of Individuals Feel that their Employers are Not Doing Enough to Support their Mental Health...

And 51% of Individuals Believe that Getting Rid of Toxic Employees would Help.

But Here’s the Reality...

All of these Factors Fail to Understand what is Causing All of This.

We can Look at One Factor in Today’s Workforce which can Help Explain Every Single One of these Data Points and Causes...

And that Same Point Also Explains Why None of these Factors will Improve.

The Factor?

Burnout.

It is Impacting Over 80% of the Workforce Today.

Do You Think that it is “Coincidence” that Over 80% of the Workforce is in Burnout “And” 80% of People say that their Workplace is Toxic?

It is Not Coincidence at All.

When We are in Burnout, as Humans, We are at Our Absolute Worst.

We become More Reactive...

Our Emotional Regulation and Emotional Intelligence Decreases...

We are More Likely to Make Mistakes...

We are Slower to Solve Problems...

We are Slower at Learning...

We Become Sick More Often...

We are Less Creative and Innovative...

Our Productivity Potential Drops to 5% or Less...

And More.

Now, Let’s Cross Reference these Different Factors.

Bad Managers can be Explained...

When there are More Mistakes Occurring, Worse Problem-Solving, Slow Learning, Sickness, and a Lack of Productivity in Employees...

“Mixed” with the Managers Own Lowered Emotional Regulation and Emotional Intelligence...

Not to Mention that Many Managers Do Not Receive Training on “How” to Manage Well...

Is a Recipe for Poor Leadership, Misunderstandings, and Toxicity Created by Managers.

If We Look at a Lack of Growth Opportunities...

It can Be Explained by the Low Productivity which Prevents Organizations from Being Able to “Have” Growth Opportunities...

Plus, it is Harder to See People as “Ready” for Growth Opportunities when they are Struggling from Factors like Low Productivity, Emotional Regulation, Creativity, and Innovation, while also Being Sick Frequently and Making Mistakes.

Staffing Shortages and Increased Workloads can be Self-Explanatory...

But there are Also Factors of Being Sick and Low Productivity Meaning that Workloads Build Up.

When All of these Factors are Combined, it is Unsurprising that Work Cultures Become Toxic...

Because a Culture is Created by the Actions of Everyone in the Workplace...

And if All of the Above, or even a Number of Them, are the Norm in a Workplace, then a Toxic Work Culture is the Expected Result.

So...

We can See that Burnout Helps Explain All of these Results.

But...

If We Look Closer into these Same Statistics...

We can also Understand Why these Problems are Going to Get Worse.

The Statistics Show that People have a Few Ideas of “What” Would Improve the Toxicity of the Workplace...

There is the Idea Presented in these Statistics that if You “Get Rid of Toxic Employees” that it will Improve the Workplace...

But it Clearly Will Not.

Getting Rid of Employees will Only Create More Problems when Over 80% of the Workplace is in Burnout.

The Employees You Get Rid of will Simply Increase the Workload on Everyone Else...

And it Takes Time for Staffing Shortages to Be Fixed...

But those Shortages will Be Even Harder because “Most” Employees that will be Coming through the Door will “Also” be in Burnout...

And Will Struggle with Learning the New Job...

Be Less Productive than Hoped For...

Will also Struggle with their Emotional Regulation and Emotional Intelligence...

Which will Not Really Solve Anything...

And with Managers themselves having More Pressure to Get Results, while Struggling themselves with Burnout...

There is a High Likelihood that the Result will Simply be a Revolving Door at the Organization.

So, Getting Rid of “Toxic Employees” will have Little to No Effect at the End of the Day...

Especially when those Same “Toxic Employees” would likely be Amazing Employees “If” they were to Escape Burnout.

The Other Idea that is Presented is that Increased Access to Support for Mental Health would Help Overcome the Toxicity of the Workplace.

Now, I Do Believe that Many Employees are Deeply Struggling with their Mental Health...

And More Access to Resources would be Beneficial for Organizations...

The Challenge with this Solution is that it is Not “Enough”.

Burnout is Not a Mental Health Problem.

Burnout can “Cause” Many Problems with Mental Health...

But Burnout is a Significantly Larger Issue Overall.

When You Begin to Understand the Problems that Exist within Burnout...

There are Dietary Problems...

Nervous System Problems...

HRV Coherence and Problems...

Respiration Problems...

Environmental Toxin Problems...

Immune System Problems...

And More.

All of these Factors Contribute to the Causes of Burnout.

Even “If” You Aid the Mental Health Challenges...

These Other Problems Still Exist...

Which are Both Contributing to Burnout Overall...

And will Further Make it Very Difficult to Really “Resolve” the Mental Health Challenges.

This is Why We can Say with Certainty that Workplace Toxicity will Continue to Get Worse.

Burnout is a Complex Psychophysiological “Result” of a Combination of Problems that are Occurring Simultaneously...

And the Majority of “Solutions” to Burnout are Simply Not Enough...

And if Nothing is Being Done to Resolve the Contributing Factors to Burnout...

Then Burnout will Continue to Spread...

With the Result that Workplace Toxicity will Also Spread.

None of this is Surprising when You Begin to Understand the Psychophysiology.

Sadly, it is a Problem that Will Continue to Exist...

Until We take the Proper Measures to Understand Burnout and the Causes that Contribute to It in Today’s World.
