Why Most People Struggle With True Progress
The Challenge Of Perception Versus Reality
I have had an incredible career so far.
I do not say that to puff myself up or be boastful...
Because the truth is, I know that there are many other incredibly talented people who deserve similar levels of recognition.
But it is true.
Objectively, I’ve had an incredible career.
I have attained multiple degrees, up to the doctoral Level...
Including receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Advanced Studies in Psychology...
Learned and obtained certifications from some of the greatest minds in different areas of psychophysiology...
Have become a licensed and triple board-certified functional health practitioner and coach...
Have written over 1,000 articles in less than 3 Years...
Have been asked to write articles by the editors of magazines...
Have been featured on the cover of magazines...
As well as having appeared on a billboard in Times Square, New York...
Been awarded and nominated for over 150 awards...
Up to the Hall of Fame level...
While also being a semi-professional athlete...
All by the age of 32.
This does not even include what I have helped clients obtain over the years, which I believe is far more meaningful than all of these combined.
When I talk about my career...
I am often asked...
How do I do it all?
When you look at it on paper...
I appear to have attained more than most people dream about in their careers...
Certainly more than I have ever dreamed about either, and I pass the glory to God for that.
But here’s the thing...
There is a reason that most people struggle with progress...
And never attain these types of results.
What I have accomplished is not a factor of genetics, privilege, or luck.
I had a speech impediment, was “borderline” ADD/ADHD, and struggled to read in my early life, all of which required me to receive special ed. in elementary school...
I grew up in a single-parent household, and my mother had to work hard to keep food on the table...
I had to take out loans for my early education...
I had no job prospects out of university and had to apply to literally hundreds of organizations over months with no results...
When I began my businesses, it was self-funded, boot-strapped, with the earnings from a layoff after a corporate merger that I got the short end of a stick on...
Yet...
I still progressed.
Why?
I understood the power of imperceptible progress.
When most people think about progress...
They believe it will come in the form of something they can see...
Something tangible...
Something noticeable.
Perhaps they believe that it is recognition for the mastery that they have attained in their field of knowledge...
Or a certain amount of income or revenue...
A nice car or home...
Or something else like this.
The perception is that you will see the fruit of your labors.
But here is the reality...
Most progress is absolutely invisible...
Sometimes for years.
You will not receive recognition for it.
You will not see anything tangible for it.
It will often feel like nothing is happening.
That is why most people fail to see progress...
They fail to understand that these things do not come quickly...
Often taking years or decades of consistent work without anyone ever noticing you.
You have to go out...
On your own...
With no promises or guarantees...
Without any noticeable markers of success or progress...
With the audacity to believe in yourself in a world that feels uncaring...
And to make sacrifices that you know may never pay off...
All for the hope that, eventually, it might lead to something.
Most people cannot handle that type of pressure.
They cannot handle utilizing 60%+ of their income or revenue to fuel their own personal growth and the growth of their goals...
Or writing hundreds of articles and making thousands of posts that receive little to no interaction...
Or getting back up after taking a giant financial risk that did not have any payoff.
These are all parts of my journey...
Requirements for invisible progress.
There have been so many days...
Weeks...
And years...
That I endured this invisible progress.
It took about 7 years in my business...
Before I began to see significant tangible results...
Working constantly...
Making tiny progress every single day.
Despite the fact that there were not tangible results that I was taking hold of...
I still knew that I was making true progress.
Progress in knowledge...
Progress in wisdom...
Progress in the compound effect of the body of my work...
Progress in impact for the clients I had...
Progress that was needed...
Before the tangibles began to come.
This is also what most people fail to understand about true progress...
Because they believe that all the tangibles come early...
They fail to do enough to obtain those tangibles...
And give up long before they come.
But...
When you stay devoted to true progress...
You begin to attain levels that most people do not even realize are possible...
Which means that you enter a world that is rarely touched by others.
Why have I been able to gain so much recognition in what seems like such a small period of time?
Because there are few individuals who have done the work to get to a similar point in their lives...
And because there are very few individuals who have gotten to that point...
The tangible recognition is often given to those few individuals...
Repetitively.
Opportunities tend to seek out those who have the greatest recognition...
Which creates more growth potential...
And more recognition.
Can you see the pattern?
This is known as a Virtuous Cycle...
But it requires extreme dedication to invisible progress to create.
However...
Because most people do not perceive the reality of what it takes...
They fail to ever make real progress in their lives.
They become trapped in a Vicious Cycle...
Of false perceptions...
Leading to disappointing results...
Causing them to give up long before true progress has been made.
To overcome this...
You need to gain a better perception...
One that requires you to accept that you will not see the markers of success...
For a long time.
But...
If you take on that perception...
And you dedicate yourself to true progress...
Eventually, you can enter a league where there is little to no competition.
Here is the best part, though...
If you do this correctly...
You will no longer care about the markers of success.
Why?
Because all of the true meaning and value of the journey exists within true progress...
Overcoming the daily struggles...
The knowledge and wisdom that is gained when no one else was paying attention...
Who you become through it all...
And that gives you a demeanor...
A swagger...
A self-value...
Which others will recognize and admire...
While allowing you to remain grounded in the continued reality...
Of true progress.
