Why Doing Nothing May Increase Your Recovery From Burnout
The Funny Psychophysiological Aspects At Play
Nearly Every “Solution” to Burnout has the Same Piece of Advice...
Relax...
Do Nothing...
Allow the Body Time to Recover.
Sounds like a Pretty Good Theory to the Problem...
But What About in Reality?
Well, in Reality, it Turns Out that this Advice Simply Does Not Work.
How Do We Know?
People have Gotten “Really” Good at Doing Nothing...
But Burnout has Actually Gotten Worse.
It Now Impacts Over 80% of the Workforce...
And it is Expected to Get Worse.
More People are Doing Nothing...
And Burnout is Also Getting Worse.
It Seems that the Truth is that this Plan Do Not Work...
But When You Understand Psychophysiology at Deep Levels, this is Not Surprising.
Why?
It has to Do with Energy (Mg-ATP), and When You Understand This, You will Also Understand that Doing Nothing May “Worsen” Your Ability to Recover.
How So?
Well, Fundamentally, the Problem of Burnout is an Energy (Mg-ATP) Problem.
You Need a Certain Amount of Clean Nutrients - Macronutrients, Micronutrients, Minerals, etc. - to Create Bodily Energy (Mg-ATP) and Maintain the Functions of the Body.
We Understand this at a Basic Level, which is Why We Eat Food.
But...
What Happens When We Expend More Energy (Mg-ATP) than We are Physically Able to Create?
There is a Deficit.
Now, Our Bodies are Designed Incredibly to Handle Deficits...
To a Degree.
Basically, the Body will “Turn Off” Any Systems that are Deemed “Non-Essential” to Our Current “Survival Situation”...
Because Losing More Energy (Mg-ATP) than We can Produce “Is” a Physiological Survival Situation.
This is Great in a Short-Term Survival Situation where We Eventually are able to Get the Proper Clean Nutrients that We Need...
However, Our World is Very Problematic Today and Does Not Provide This Well...
Especially in the Modern or Standard American Diet (MAD/SAD), which Most of the Western World Follows...
As Well as Based on Poor Farming Practices, which Even Impact Whole and Organic Foods, making them Less Nutrient Dense.
The Result is that We Struggle to Get “Enough” Nutrients, which puts us in a Large Energy (Mg-ATP) Deficit for a Long Period of Time...
Which is then Where Doing Nothing Becomes More Problematic.
Why?
Our Bodies will Pay Attention to What We “Do” which Contributes to Our Survival.
It will Prioritize Keeping “Those” Systems Active and Going Well...
While Turning Off Other Systems.
Now, when You Do Nothing...
Which Systems are Being Kept On?
Can You See Where This Can Begin to Become Problematic?
Let’s take for Example the Study of Embodied Cognition.
What does this Research Say?
Our Ability to Think is Closely Related to How We Physically Move within Our Environment and the Quality of Our Movement.
Movement has Direct Ties to the Functioning of Our Hearts, Our Nervous Systems, Our Guts, and Our Brains.
But What Happens when We “Do Nothing”?
Exactly That - Nothing.
We Stop Using Our Bodies...
What Does this Subconsciously Tell Us from an Energy (Mg-ATP) Deficit Perspective?
The Systems that Support these Muscles that are “Not” Being Used are “Non-Essential” for Survival...
And Therefore Can be Turned Off.
But...
Turning the Systems Off Begins a Process of Muscular Degeneration, Buildup of Toxins, Inflammation...
Which All Lead to Physiological Imbalances and Become “Added Stressors” on the Body.
The Result...
It Requires Even “More” Energy (Mg-ATP) to Fix All of the Problems that are Accumulating...
While Your Brain is Negatively Impacted Due to Less Use of Your Body.
Then...
If You “Do” Get Enough Energy (Mg-ATP) to Begin to Turn Systems Back On...
You have a Dual Problem to Contend With.
First, the Body is “Slow” to Turn Systems Back On...
Better to “Wait” Until We are “Sure” that We Will Not be Back in a Survival Situation.
Second, You have to Content with the Habits Problem.
When We Build Habits, Part of What Makes them So Effective is that Our Bodies will Optimize Energy (Mg-ATP) Pathways for those Habits...
This Means that the “More” We Do Something, the “Less” Energy becomes Required to “Maintain” It...
And the “More” Energy is Required to Do Something Different.
If You have Been “Doing Nothing”...
What Do You Think Happens to these Energy (Mg-ATP) Pathways?
They Deteriate as Well.
The Result is that if You “Want” to Rebuild these Pathways, it Becomes a “Huge” Use of Energy.
In Physics, this is Known as the “Impulse”, the Force Needed to “Start” the Process of Momentum...
And the “Impulse” has Been Growing “Because” of the Disuse of Your Body.
The Result is that You Need a “Lot” More Energy to Start these Systems Back Up...
Which “May” be Problematic for Your Body which Still is “Remembering” the Energy Crisis You “Survived”.
Suddenly, Trying to Move these Systems is Using a “Lot” of Energy, which Triggers a “Warning” in Our Bodily Systems that this Set of Actions “May” Be Dangerous...
That this Behavior “May” Put Us “Back” into the Energy (Mg-ATP) Deficit.
So...
Subconsciously, Our Bodies will Actually Try to “Divert” Us from that Behavior!
This is Part of the Reason Why So Many People Fail their New Year’s Resolutions for Working Out...
They are Fighting Against the Impulse Cost, and their Bodies are Subconsciously Diverting Them in Clever Ways from Pursuing those Workouts.
So, What Happens for Most People?
The Result is that Most People Who “Escape” Burnout end up “Relapsing” into Burnout...
Because they Fail to Understand the Many Psychophysiological Factors at Play.
I Only Explained “One” of these Systems and What Occurs when We “Do Nothing”...
But it is Absolutely Not the “Only” System that is Negatively Impacted by Doing Nothing.
As Humans, we are Extremely Complex from a Psychophysiological Perspective...
And when We Ignore How our Bodies Work...
It can Become Very Difficult to Recover...
And the “Simple Solutions” Such as “Doing Nothing” End Up Making Things Worse because they Fail to Understand the Full Psychophysiological Reality.
If You Really Want to Overcome Burnout...
And Not Relapse Quickly like Most Do...
Then You Must Understand the Full Picture.
