Why Doing Nothing Is The Wrong Solution To Burnout

The Problematic Psychophysiology That Plays Out

Without a Doubt, the Largest Problem in Business...

Burnout.

It is Impacting Over 80% of the Workforce...

And Continues to Get Worse.

It Decimates Our Productivity Potential...

Capping It At 5%.

It is also Negatively Impacting Mental Health...

Terribly.

Now, recently there has been a Growing Movement around what some Claim to be a Solution...

Doing Nothing.

Literally.

The Idea is that, if We are Extremely Overstimulated in Burnout...

Then it Could Make Sense to Do Nothing...

As a Way to Compensate for the Overstimulation.

On Paper, it Sounds Great.

But the Problem is that this is Not how it Plays Out in Reality.

What Actually Occurs when We Attempt to Do Nothing as a Solution to Burnout?

Quite a Bit Actually, most of which is Not Intended.

To Start...

You have to Ask if You're Doing Nothing Alone or within a Group (of Any Size).

If We Do Nothing Alone...

This actually becomes a form of Isolation.

As Humans, we are Social Creatures, and Need to be a Part of a Community...

And Isolation has Extremely Negative Consequences.

So, if We Do Nothing Alone...

It becomes a Social Stressor...

Especially in the Long-Term.

But what About if We Do Nothing with Others?

Whether it is with a Significant Other, or maybe a Small Group of Friends?

The Problem is that when We Do Nothing with Others...

We Begin to Associate Spending Time with those Individuals as Boring.

There is No Stimulation within that Group...

And This Often becomes a Form of Resentment or We Simply Lose Interest in the Individuals We Do Nothing With.

This is a Part of Why So Many People Lose Interest in their Significant Others...

When they Do Nothing Together...

There is Nothing that Keeps them Engaged in the Relationship.

Next...

To Understand the Problem of Using Nothing as a Solution to Burnout...

We have to Understand What Happens with Burnout in Work.

By Nature...

We Lose Engagement in the Work.

Due to the High Levels of Experiencing Dis-Stress, We Begin wanting to Escape the Workplace...

It is a Natural Survival or Fight-or-Flight Response.

Then...

If Our Solution is to Do Nothing...

This too has Nothing that Engages Us.

So We Go from One Environment with No Engagement with Dis-Stress...

To Another Environment with No Engagement with Boredom.

The Problem is that We have No Engagement with Anything in Life.

We are Disconnected...

And Ironically the State of Boredom becomes a Stressor in this Scenario.

It is Very Similar to Zoo Animals which Require Enrichment Programs to Stay Engaged within their Exhibits.

When the Zoo Animals are Not Engaged?

They Become Sick, Experience Mental Disorders, and Die Prematurely.

The Exact Same thing Happens to Us when We Fail to Be Engaged with Anything.

But the Problems Continue.

When We Do Nothing...

We are Not Doing Anything to Resolve the Stressors that are Contributing to Burnout.

See...

Burnout is a State of Chronic and Constant Dis-Stress...

It Occurs Because We have a High Level of Baseline Stressors...

And Our Baseline Stressors are Greater than Our Stress Threshold.

By Doing Nothing...

Our Baseline Stressors are Still above Our Stress Threshold...

Which Means that We are Still in Dis-Stress...

Meaning We Stay in Burnout.

Nothing is Changing.

Further...

Most People utilize Doing Nothing as an Evasion Tactic...

To Disassociate from their Problems.

But...

This Obviously Does Nothing to Solve the Problems...

And Our Subconscious is Still Very Aware that the Problems Exist.

This means that at a Subconscious Level, these Stressors are Still Holding Mental Space...

And Often Stressors Become Magnified when they are Maintained Mentally.

The Result?

We Do Nothing...

And Simultaneously Multiply Our Subconscious Experience of Our Stressors.

Which Means that Our Burnout is just Getting Worse.

When You Look at the Psychophysiology that is at Play...

No Matter How You Try to Slice It...

Doing Nothing is the Wrong Solution to Burnout.

It Just Does Not Work.

But this Should Not be Surprising...

People have been Attempting to Do Nothing as a Solution to their Dis-Stress for Years...

But it has Never Worked.

If it Did Work...

Then We Would Not Be Experiencing Burnout at Such Extreme Levels in Today's World.

As they Always Say...

Doing the Same Thing and Expecting a Different Result is the Definition of Insanity.

It is Time for Us to Drop the Insanity.

Doing Nothing is Not a Solution.
