Why Am I Stuck On My Health Goals?
The Three Factors I See Holding Back Most People’s Health
Written by a human, for humans, always.
I did not originally set out to understand people’s health problems.
I was fascinated with a singular idea...
Peak performance.
How to intentionally get our psychophysiology set up to get consistent results.
What I call today becoming Hyper-Human.
But here’s the thing...
When you begin to understand how the body is “supposed” to function...
You also begin to ask the question...
Why is it not functioning that way?
That question has taken me down a fascinating journey...
Which has also helped me understand why so many people are stuck on their health goals.
In working with clients, there are three factors that I frequently see...
Which hold most people back.
What are the three factors?
The first is their emotions.
What most people fail to realize...
Is that most health problems we have stem from our emotions...
And the few that do not still end up having an emotional component that becomes created that needs to become resolved.
For instance...
If you fall out of a tree and break your leg...
We can say that the damage that was caused was based on factors of gravity, speed, biomechanics, and bone strength.
None of those are emotional causes of what happened...
But you will experience emotions from the broken leg...
Perhaps feeling angry, stupid, or frustrated by what occurred.
There may be fear about what this means for the future.
Certainly, there will be different emotions about learning how to function with this new change in the body.
Emotions are involved.
If you do not have solutions for the emotions that are experienced...
Ways of resolving them...
Then those emotions can actually create and/or fuel poor health outcomes.
What is the second factor?
The nervous system.
Now, many people believe that the nervous system is simply an information highway for brain signals...
And that is partially true...
But fails to understand that it is actually vastly more than that.
In fact...
The nervous system is filled with neurons...
That can learn, think, and act independently of the brain.
The nervous system is really an interdependent system that can tell the brain what it wants to do, can obey what the brain is guiding it to do, and refuse what the brain is attempting to get it to do.
The nervous system actually has its own goal that is different from the brain.
What makes this more fascinating...
Is that the nervous system pathways will develop and change in alignment with its own goals...
Regardless of what the brain’s goals may be.
The classic example here is when some people experience the “fight-or-flight” response...
They will report that they acted in a way that they did not want to...
Such as running away when they knew they should have stood their ground.
What is happening?
The brain was attempting to tell the nervous system to stand their ground...
But the nervous system ignored the brain and initiated procedures to run...
Likely a reaction that was developed or subconsciously inherited (not genetically).
Further than this...
As these pathways develop over time...
Based on a variety of factors...
Including emotional factors...
They will become habituated by the nervous system, and it can change the information pathways.
What makes it more challenging...
Is that there can be physical, chemical, and emotional challenges that exist in the nervous system...
Which you cannot resolve through traditional methodologies that most people look to when working on their health.
The result...
Is that many people are doing a lot of things to fix their health...
But are working in the wrong areas to resolve the issues.
The result...
Is that if the problems remain...
It will end up spreading into new challenges in other systems of the body.
What is the third factor?
The environment that they exist within.
You can look at typical factors people think of when they consider this...
Like air, water, and food quality that are all important.
But it also should include factors such as the stress levels of the people you spend the most time with...
Sleep environment...
Amount of sunlight you take in on your skin...
And more.
Your environment can create many negative health factors...
And they may not all be directly your fault.
The classic area I see this in today’s world is burnout.
If you are in a group of people who are experiencing burnout...
Through psychophysiological mechanisms such as our Neurocardiology...
We can actually be “pulled” into burnout ourselves...
Which can explain how people will go on vacation, feel great, and within a week be exactly where they were (or worse!) before their vacation.
This is known as “Group Burnout”, and it is impacting over 80% of the workforce.
When you combine these factors...
It helps us understand why so many people are stuck on their health goals.
Any one of these...
But very often it is all three simultaneously...
Can either make other health solutions significantly less effective...
And in some cases...
Can make other health solutions actually detrimental.
The classic example here is working out.
If your nervous system is in a state of chronic fight-or-flight while you are at rest...
Then you begin to add on difficult strength lifting or fast running...
You can actually end up making the chronic fight-or-flight worse...
Which means that all of your working out ends up being detrimental instead of helpful.
This is also a part of the reason (but not the entire reason) that many people struggle with changing certain aspects of their health.
Often...
They will try to change one factor which has a negative impact in another area of the psychophysiology...
The body will seek to avoid anything creating a negative impact...
And subconsciously their body will undermine all of their efforts.
Even when they logically know these things “should” help some area of their health...
Their body will work against the goals their brain is trying to accomplish.
If you want to attain your health goals...
So that you can become Hyper-Human...
You need to understand which health factors are at play...
And if you feel like you’re stuck...
There is likely a very real and reasonable reason you feel that way.
