Understanding The World And Whether You Need To Do Things Differently
Written by a human, for humans, always.
What is the point of a system?
That is not something that most people really stop to think about.
They will look at the systems...
They will question and attack the systems...
They will join the systems...
But rarely do people actually ask what the point of a system really is.
So often...
We make hasty decisions about whether we believe a system is “right” or “wrong”...
Without understanding the purpose of what a system was created for.
So...
What is the point of a system?
Really the entire design of a system...
Is to create more consistent results of some sort.
That really is the entire point.
There is some desired result that we are seeking out in the world...
So we design a system to generate a result...
With the goal to attain that result.
As we understand the path better...
We try to develop and tweak these systems to continue to get more predictable results.
This is how an animal trail develops into a dirt road, to a merchant road, to ship passages, to modern highways and air passages.
A system of travel...
Designed and updated over time...
With the goal of more predictably getting better results.
So are systems good?
Well...
They absolutely can be...
But they are not always.
If your goal was to get goods across the ocean...
Trying to build a merchant road through the water would never work.
Sometimes you need new and different systems...
And sometimes the systems that exist are so limited in their extents...
Sometimes for good reasons...
That they can become counterproductive in situations where they are not designed for.
For instance...
If you build a highway to allow for vehicles to travel more quickly...
You might need to put walls on turns as a safety precaution when cars need to change directions while maintaining high speeds...
So that those cars do not go off the road and create more damage.
That is a good system that has been designed...
But if you were to put houses on those fast-speed turns with tiny driveways...
Do you think it would be effective?
Likely not, because it would either create crashes near those areas more frequently...
Or there would be extreme slowdowns which would make the highway pointless...
Or both.
What am I getting at?
Sometimes when you are going through life...
You will discover that there are systems that have been designed...
Sometimes with good purposes and uses...
But which struggle with certain goals because they are poor systems for other purposes.
But what happens to those other purposes?
Should they just be dismissed as not worth paying attention to?
In some cases, that may be a wise decision.
Building houses right on the turns of fast highways is probably not worth it.
But in other cases...
The value and need might be more needed and valuable to society...
Such as in modern healthcare.
We have some great and amazing systems that have been designed to keep people alive...
Especially in the case of emergencies...
But those same systems appear to be doing a very poor job of keeping people from getting sick in the first place.
So then there comes a moment where you have to make a decision...
Do you join the system and see what you can do from within that system?
Or...
Do you decide to become unorthodox?
Now...
Some people are far too hasty to make the decision to become unorthodox...
And in their desire to do things differently...
Actually end up making things worse...
Destroying systems that are generally good...
All for the sake of being unorthodox.
That can actually be a horrifying and terrible thing to do...
As we have seen in different governmental systems throughout history.
Sometimes becoming unorthodox...
Is actually the problem...
Especially when it is done dishonestly or without truly understanding the systems currently at work.
Sometimes the system is designed in such a way for very good reasons.
Before you make the decision to do something unorthodox...
It is incredibly important that you actually understand what is already at play in the current systems...
Not in theory or on paper...
But in working reality and how it impacts people’s real lives.
You cannot improve something if you do not really understand what is or is not working...
And you are vastly more likely to break something good than fix something wrong with poor understanding.
That is what we see time and time again throughout history...
When people are poorly informed...
But have a delusional belief they know better...
They both create new problems while also falling into old problems that already had working solutions.
And...
Sometimes the current systems truly are not enough...
Requiring someone to think outside of the current systems...
While appreciating what is working...
To become unorthodox.
Here is another thing to add into this line of questioning...
If the current systems are not working...
Is it really because there is a problem with the system itself...
Or do the problems exist because those currently maintaining the system are doing poorly?
See...
Sometimes we are quick to say that the systems are the problems...
But the truth may be that it is not inherently the system that is problematic...
Rather, it could be people who are misusing the system, purposefully or unintentionally...
Or it could be that certain things are not being done within the system, which, if they were, would fix everything.
In these cases...
The solution is not something unorthodox...
But rather becoming more orthodox in what already exists.
Here is what we need to really understand in the question of whether to become unorthodox...
Yes...
We do need people who are willing and able to ask different questions and find new answers that do not currently exist...
And...
We also need people who make the current systems work better.
We need both types of people...
Orthodox and unorthodox.
People who develop the systems...
And people who design new systems.
Ideally...
We also need these types of people to work together to build upon what is already working...
While developing new ways of working that improve everything at large.
Do not be so quick to make a decision on whether to be unorthodox...
Maybe it is the right decision...
But it could also be the wrong one.
You will not know for certain...
Until you actually understand the real systems that are already at play...
Deeply and intimately.
Be wary in the choice of whether to become unorthodox.
