What Will Keep You Going?
Reflecting On Why I Continue After Seeing So Many Fall Away Over The Years
Written by a human, for humans, always.
What is it that keeps someone going?
Especially in the long term?
It is something that I have always wondered.
I have spoken to many people over the years...
Who said they were dedicated...
That they were going to keep going with so many different things...
Yet...
So often it does not happen.
I have met entrepreneurs who gave up.
Writers who stopped writing.
Athletes who stopped being active.
People who wanted to change the world...
Who just did not.
I have seen it happen so many times.
Why is it like this?
What causes people...
To fall away?
To give up?
While only a few select others...
Continue forward?
There are some reasons that are legitimate and make sense...
Sickness and bodily harm...
Financial requirements to take care of family...
There are real reasons to change paths in life.
But...
Far more often...
There is another reason that I find that causes people to stop going...
They were doing it for the wrong reasons.
That is not to say that their reasons themselves were bad.
Yes...
It is true that there are some reasons that are clearly bad for their inability to provide what we need psychophysiologically as humans...
Money...
Fame...
Glory.
But I have also seen people give up when their reasons were good...
A desire to improve the world...
To help vulnerable populations...
To provide a better future for their family.
These are all valiant reasons to pursue something...
But that does not necessarily make it the right reason for any single individual.
That is where it becomes so confusing for so many people.
They believe that their “why” is what will keep them going...
And it can help...
But it is not what keeps us in the game.
You need to dig deeper than a why.
What keeps one going...
Is a seeking...
But a seeking that is vastly deeper than what most people pursue.
This is the problem...
What most people seek...
Even if it can be agreed that the reason itself is positive...
Is not a deep seeking in their life.
It only skims the surface.
This is also the reason why...
The efforts are abandoned.
When we pursue something, but we are not completely enveloped in it...
It will never be enough to keep us pursuing it.
At least...
Not at a strong level.
It needs to be important work to us, yes...
But it also must speak to our souls...
Help us understand ourselves at a better level...
To be more connected with the world at large.
How many people do you know...
Who are pursuing something at that kind of level?
That is why so many people do not continue on their paths.
They are not pursuing it at that sort of level.
They are not seeking that sort of dedication to that path.
Often...
What they are pursuing...
Cannot provide that sort of path for them.
This becomes the true reason most do not sustain the path.
The path they are pursuing is too shallow for their needs...
Even if the why is good.
So many people...
Are consumed with pursuing some grandiose why...
When what they really may need...
Is a path that speaks to them personally.
One thing I have noticed...
Is that for some people...
It is what seems the most simple of paths...
That provides everything they truly need...
Which they pursue at the most excellent of levels.
When you are seeking out a path...
Make sure that it speaks to the depths of who you are and what you truly need.
