What Psychology Misses In Human Behavior
The Trap That Prevents Us From Understanding Behavior
We’ve Made many Advancements in Understanding Human Behavior.
Much of what We Know has been Driven by Psychology.
The Main Focus?
Our Brains.
Mapping of the Brain...
Understanding Neurochemicals in the Brain...
Determining How the Brain Impacts Other Parts of the Body...
It has been Instrumental in Learning About How We Do What We Do.
But...
There is Still a Lot that Psychology has Not Revealed.
At Least...
Not By Itself.
There is a Trap that Most Psychologists have Fallen Into when it Comes to Understanding Thinking.
You can Understand this with One Simple Question...
What are Neurons?
Most People will Tell You that are the Connections that Exist in Our Brains which is Where Cognition Occurs.
However...
This is Not Entirely True.
Are Neurons where Cognition Occurs?
Yes.
But, Neurons actually Exist throughout Our Entire Bodies...
Not “Just” the Brain.
But this is Where the Trap Occurs..
The Brain Trap.
It is the False Belief that All Cognition Occurs in the Brain.
This is Why Most Psychologists have Difficulty in Fully Understanding Human Behavior...
They have Trapped Themselves in the Brain.
When You have the Subconscious Belief that All Cognition happens in the Brain...
You Begin to Look Solely at the Brain to Understand Why People Do what they Do...
Only Looking for Brain Problems and Brain Solutions...
But Missing Most of the Truth.
Yes, the Brain is Important...
But there are Three Other Cognition Systems that Exist in the Body.
Each of these Systems have their own Sets of Neurons.
They also Each Think Interdependently of the Brain.
What Does This Mean?
Each of these Cognition Systems can both Communicate with Each Other...
And Determine Behavior Separate from each other.
Yes...
Other Cognition Systems can Determine Behavior “Separate” from the Brain.
They can Influence and even Supersede the Brain’s Decisions.
These Other Cognition can even Team Up against the Brain to Make a Point.
When We Look at Human Behavior...
This Helps Explain Why Most People Fail to Utilize their Brains to Drive their Behavior.
Just look at All the Failed New Year’s Plans.
It is Estimated that only 8% - 9% of People Keep their Resolutions...
Despite 80% of People Being Confident that they can Last the Entire Year.
Why?
Most New Year’s Resolutions are Only Established in the Brain...
Without Accounting for the Needs or Workings of the Other Cognition Systems.
The Result?
The Other Cognition Systems work Against the Goals of the Brain...
And People Fail.
So, what are the Other Cognition Systems?
You have the Heart, with the study called Neurocardiology.
You have the Gut, with the study called Neurogastroenterology.
Then there is the Nervous System.
This last one is Strange because it is usually “Combined” in Neurology, but is generally Not Considered from the Perspective of Thinking on its Own.
The Result?
Most People Fail to Understand how the Nervous System Acts on its Own, despite Understanding that it “Can” Act on Its Own.
The Classic Example here is when People Put their Hand Down, and Suddenly Lift It Up without Knowing Why...
Until they Look Down and See that they had Accidently Placed their Hand on the Oven.
Essentially, the Nervous System detected a Threat and Acted before there was a Brain Recognition of What was Occurring.
When we Really Start to Consider Our Behavior, We have Many Experiences like this, which we usually Dismiss...
A Result of the Brain Trap.
For Instance...
Most People have Experienced Walking into a Room, and “Feeling” like Something was Off without Being Able to Explain “What” or “Why”.
This is actually a Function of our Neurocardiology, where our Hearts are literally Feeling Electromagnetic Fields that are Generated by Others’ Hearts...
We may Not have a “Brain” Reason why things Feel Off...
But Our Hearts Do.
Or the Occurrence where You Begin to Crave a Strange Food but are Not Sure Why You want it So Badly.
That is Directed by our Neurogastroenterology where that “Strange Food” we are Craving has some Specific Nutrient that We Need...
Even if Our Brain is Not Aware of the Nutrient Existing in that Food.
When We Attempt to Consider Behavior Solely from a Brain Perspective...
We end up Unsure of Why So Much of Our Behavior Occurs.
From a Brain Perspective, it usually Makes No Sense.
But...
When We Understand that there are Multiple Cognition Systems with Different Goals and Needs...
Suddenly, Behavior that was Unexplainable from a Brain Perspective makes Complete Sense from the Perspective of One of the Other Cognition Systems.
What is More Fascinating is that Each of these Systems have Different Memory Systems that are Also Interdependent...
Which can Explain Why certain Reactions Occur in Situations that We are Not Expecting.
The Strange Food Craving is a Perfect Example where Our Neurogastroenterology is Acting from its Own Memory.
It can also Explain Why People often Pursue Similar Types of People in Relationships...
Our Neurocardiology begins to Associate Certain types of Electromagnetic Waves with Relationships and Connection, and the Heart Informs the Brain when We Encounter Them...
Even when Logically We “Know” those Types of Relationships often become Problematic.
It can also Explain Why Specific Smells or Colors trigger Certain Responses...
The Nervous System keeps Memories of “Aspects” of Our Past and Inform Us of Safety and Danger based on those Aspects like Smells or Colors.
These Memories can also Combine in Ways we are Not Expecting.
For Instance, there are Many People who have Specific Comfort Foods...
When You Dig Into These Comfort Foods...
Often they are Related to Experiences with a Loved Family Member.
Our Neurogastroenterology may Remember a Certain Nutrient that is Needed in that Food...
The Nervous System has Memories of Safety Related to that Food...
And Usually it is Far More Difficult to “Avoid” that Food when We are Around the Loved Person because of the Memories in our Neurocardiology.
All of these then Combine to Tell Our Brain to Ignore the “Logic” that Our Current Diet does not “Allow” for that Food.
To Truly Understand Human Behavior...
We have to Deeply Understand Humans Fully.
This Unlocks So Much...
From Redesigning Our Own Behavior...
To Understanding and Working with Others More Effectively.
That becomes the Power of Moving Beyond Psychology...
And Into Psychophysiology.
This Truly helps Us to Understand Human Behavior.
