What Is Worth The Effort?
Contemplating The Worth And Worthlessness Of Everything
Achieving your goals can be a strange experience.
You work hard...
You put your heart and soul into things...
You are not quite sure if you will get there...
Whether you will make it...
Or if the finish line will remain out of reach...
And then...
You make it.
If you’re lucky...
You make it again.
If you’re dedicated...
You might make it another time...
And another...
And another.
The more you make it, though...
The more strange it becomes.
There is even a point where you put your foot forward toward something...
Look at the result...
And you already know that you’ve succeeded even before it is determined.
You get the success...
And you’re unsurprised.
Unphased.
It is no longer remarkable.
Just expected.
Not because you have an egotism about it...
Not because you are cocky...
But simply because you are that skilled...
With few individuals who truly understand how the game is played...
And fewer people who play it as well as you.
So you begin to have that success...
And you know that there is worth in that success...
And yet...
It can simultaneously feel worthless.
There is a great quote that reflects this from King Solomon, who was the most accomplished and recognized individual of his day...
And perhaps of all time...
“I then reflected on all that my hands had achieved and on all the effort I had put into its achieving. What vanity it all is, and chasing of the wind! There is nothing to be gained under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:12 JB
To have everything...
All the success in the world...
And all the recognition from the most powerful individuals of the time...
A kingdom greater than his father’s, who, to this day, is considered one of the greatest Kings of the Bible...
And at the end of it all...
Call it vanity...
Chasing the wind...
Nothing...
It is not the picture that most people think of when it comes to the word...
Success.
For all the effort we put into attaining success...
All the pain we put into achieving it...
And the end result...
Is feeling it is all worthless?
Is that really what we signed up for?
Really?
It is strange...
Because the answer is that...
It depends...
On what type of worth we are discussing.
This is where many people seem to get tripped up in life.
See...
There is the worth that is assigned to things...
And there is the worth that we have internally.
Now, most people fail to understand that these are not the same thing.
They believe that the worth they have internally...
Is based on the worth that is assigned to things.
They believe that their worth...
Matches the worth of their work...
Of their achievements...
Of the successes they have gained.
So they start to seek all of those things in life...
And if they gain them...
They begin to come to a truth of life...
That they fail to understand consciously...
But which is unavoidable subconsciously.
The worth that is assigned...
To all of these things we seek...
Fail to provide the worth they hope for internally.
When this begins to lurk in our subconscious...
It creates a fear...
A panic...
That perhaps...
We will never feel of value...
Of worth.
But we only know one thing to do...
Chase...
And chase...
And chase...
But continue to find nothing.
Something to consider, though...
Does this make all of the effort worthless?
Maybe...
But not necessarily.
For you to find value in it...
You need to separate the two forms of worth.
When you understand that all of these accomplishments and achievements...
Do not provide internal worth...
Then you can appreciate their worth in their own light.
You also can appreciate...
That you must find your internal worth in other ways.
These different forms of worth may not overlap...
And the accomplishments and achievements may be worthless in providing internal worth...
But they have their own worth...
And you can still gain internal worth in other ways in your life.
These different forms of worth can be worth the effort...
As long as you understand what type of worth they are supposed to provide.
