Understanding How Little We Think Of Ourselves And Our Potential As Humans
The Reality Of How Far From "Normal" We Are
If you've followed my work, then you know that I consider myself a Runner.
I have been Running at least One Mile, Every Single Day, for Over 450 Days Straight.
The Vast Majority of the Time, I also Run Barefoot.
No Shoes.
No Socks.
Skin on Concrete and Asphalt.
Regularly, I run at a Sub-9:00 Mile...
Which is a Slow Pace for Me.
My Fastest Barefoot (So Far) was Just Below 7:10 Pace for a 5k (3.1 Miles).
Now, Many People would Consider Doing Such Things as Crazy.
Yes, even a Good Friend of Mine last night.
He and I have been Talking about Running for a Bit Now because He recently began Training for his first Marathon.
So, We've talked about Why I Choose to Run in the Way I Do.
Do I Recommend Everyone to Run Barefoot?
Of Course Not.
There are Many Conditions where it is Problematic to Run Around Barefoot...
Such as in the City, in areas where there is Frequently Broken Glass on the Ground...
Or Perhaps in Areas that are Infested with Hookworms.
I "Would" Recommend Wearing Barefoot Shoes in those Situations, however.
But...
Why Do "I" Choose to Run Literally Barefoot?
I'm a Big Believer that We, as Humans, Greatly Underestimate Our Potential.
I Believe that We are Capable of So Much More than We Realize.
And I Look to Prove That through My Actions.
I also think that in Today's World...
We are So Far "Below" Even What Should Be "Average"...
That things that Seem "Incredible" to Modern Standards Should Really Just be Close to the Norm for Human Potential.
I saw a Post which I sent to a Friend to Help Explain This...
Candelaria Rivas Ramos.
If you have Never Heard of Her, it is because she is Brand New to Ultramarathon Racing.
Candelaria ran her Very First Ultramarathon this Year in the 2025 Canyon Ultra Marathon.
She is a Member of the Rarámuri or Tarahumara Tribe in Mexico, which is Extremely Secluded from the Rest of the World.
There were No Transportation Methods for Her...
So she had to walk 14 Hours to get to the Starting Line for the Race.
Then?
In Her Very First Official Race...
63 Kilometers (About 39 Miles)...
She Took First Place in the Women's Division with a Final Time of 7 Hours, 34 Minutes, and 56 Seconds.
That Means that she was Averaging around 11:30 Minute Miles.
Oh...
And She Did the Entire Race in Traditional Clothing...
Including a Skirt Lower than Her Knees...
And Sandals.
Now, her Feat is an Incredible Testimony to the Power of Determination, Skill, and Dedication.
But here is where I find her Story to be More Interesting...
She is Not Training with what is Considered the Best Gear in the World...
She is Not Using Technology to Optimize her Performance...
The Rarámuri or Tarahumara live in what is considered a "Food Desert" where there is a Lack of Access to Nutritious and Affordable Food, and Malnutrition is Common...
Again, there is "No" Major Transportation that Goes Out There.
They also have to Deal with Drug Cartels that Live in the Same Area.
None of these Conditions are "Ideal".
Nowhere Near in Fact.
What Does that Indicate to Me?
"If" Candelaria had Access to More Ideal Resources...
How Much Better Could She Become?
And "If" She is Already "This" Amazing with So Much Stacked Against Her...
What Does That Mean about What We Consider "Normal"?
So, as I was talking to my Friend, I made that argument that, as Humans, We "Should" All be able to Accomplish "Similar" Feats.
Now, Maybe Our Average Pace would be Slower...
But Everything Distance-wise She Did "Should" be within the Realm of Possibility for the Average Human Person.
My Friend called me Crazy...
And I Asked...
Am I Crazy, or Do We as a Society Think So Little of Ourselves?
I have Focused In on Running for this Article...
But the Truth is that We as a Society Think So Little of Ourselves in "Most" Aspects of Our Lives.
If We Look at Our Productivity Potential...
Over 80% of People are in Burnout, which is Where We, as Humans, are at Our Psychophysiological Worst.
We usually "Think" We're Being Productive...
But the Truth is that We are Actually Operating at a "Max" of 5% of Our Productivity Potential based on the Scientific Research...
And Many are Actually Attaining Negative Productivity for a Variety of Reasons.
Again...
Nowhere Near Their Potential.
Nowhere Even Near Where "Average" Should Be as Humans.
We have Been Operating at Below Average for "So Long" as a Society...
That We Really Do Not have Any "True" Ideas of what Average "Should" Look Like.
Our Scientific Research Cannot Even Determine it Because Their "Averages" are Based on a Profoundly Sick Society.
Chronic Disease, mostly Due to Environmental and Lifestyle Causes, are the Cause of 75% of All Deaths Globally as of 2021.
In the US, 6 out of 10 People have a Chronic Disease...
4 out of 10 People have Multiple Chronic Diseases...
And We Know that Not All Chronic Diseases are Diagnosed, meaning that People are Already "Living" with it and Are Not Aware...
And the Current Trends Indicate that these Will Become Worse.
How Can We Get a "Good" Average...
When The Vast Majority of People have Chronic Diseases, Known or Unknown, and Many More are Close?
The Answer is that You Cannot.
What We Consider "Average" in Science Reveals "Nothing" About What the Norm for Human Potential "Should" Be.
But, We have Been Conditioned to "Believe" that "This" is Normal.
It Is Not.
Not Even Remotely Close.
We have So Much More Potential as Humans than We Realize.
It is Time for Us to Stop Thinking So Little of Ourselves...
And Unlock Our Potential.
