The Worst Thing To Do When In Burnout

That Most People End Up Doing

Written by a human, for humans, always.

Burnout is impacting over 80% of the workforce today...

And it is expected to continue to get worse.

Now, there may be many things you have heard help with burnout...

But if most of these things actually worked...

In reality and not just theory...

Then why does burnout continue to get worse?

The simple answer...

Is that they do not work.

Or...

At least they are missing something...

Something incredibly important that starts “right” at the beginning.

See...

When people begin to realize they are in a state of burnout...

Because most do not realize it immediately...

They begin to look at what they can do to overcome their burnout...

And they do the absolute worst thing they can do when they are already in burnout...

Add more to their life.

Burnout is what happens when we have been in chronic dis-stress for some time.

It is a result.

A result of what though?

Typically...

Doing too much.

It is frequently attributed to too much work...

Which can be true, especially with more and more people going beyond 50 hours of work a week...

Even to China’s 996 “illegal” work practice of working from 9 am to 9 pm 6 days a week, that is culturally still “expected” even if it is not “required”...

However, burnout can, and usually does, happen from doing too much of anything...

Especially when we combine all of these things.

If we are working 50+ hour weeks...

Plus trying to go to the gym for 7+ hours per week...

Plus trying to put time into hobbies...

Plus trying to spend time with friends...

Plus trying to keep up on our Netflix shows...

Plus...

Plus...

Plus...

While failing get enough sleep - 7 to 9 hours per night...

And failing to do any active recovery during the day...

We are overloaded with “doing” things.

Then...

When people “realize” they are in burnout...

They just try to “add” more to this.

The result...

Is they fail.

Even when things are, in “theory”, good and healthy for you...

Like journaling...

Or doing meditation...

Or going on vacation...

Or adding a hobby...

Or going to a therapist...

Or adding supplements...

Or whatever else most people try to “add”...

It usually fails because they are already doing too much in “reality”.

See...

We all have what is known as a Stress Threshold.

It is the amount of total stressors we can handle at any given time.

When we are in burnout though...

We have already “exceeded” our threshold...

Usually for a long time.

Adding “anything” to that...

Even “positive” things...

Just pushes us further past the threshold.

All change is a form of stressor, good or bad.

Think of it like working out.

Getting some exercise is good for us...

Doing too much without getting enough recovery can cause our muscles to decay faster than they can rebuild.

Too many stressors...

Not enough recovery...

Causing breakdown.

Burnout “is” a form of psychophysiological breakdown.

Literally, your body is failing to produce the resources required to maintain functioning, so it begins to shut down “nonessential” systems and tear itself apart.

By the time most people realize they are in burnout...

They are already “past” the early stages of burnout.

How long does it take to recover from the “early” stages of burnout?

At least 6 weeks.

This is why vacations really do not resolve burnout.

Even if you “start” to feel better on a vacation...

Most people are spending less than 3 weeks in a vacation...

Then they are immediately back in the same environment that caused their burnout...

So, they simply go into burnout relapse...

Which becomes worse.

Now...

How long does it take to recover from later stages of burnout?

You know, when most people finally “realize” they are in burnout?

Potentially “over” a year.

See...

If the general environment that “caused” the burnout in the first place is mostly unchanged...

Even if you “add” something that is “theoretically” helpful...

It really is not going to solve things quickly...

And because you are already past your stress threshold...

It actually will make things worse.

This is largely why burnout has become so terrible.

People believe if they “add” more that they will be saved...

But doing this just makes things worse...

Sometimes making worst stages of burnout happen more quickly.

Worse...

When you are in an environment where a significant number of people are in burnout...

As most businesses already are...

It becomes group burnout...

Where different psychophysiological mechanisms “directly” impact everyone within the same environment...

Often making burnout worse for everyone in that environment...

And frequently “keeping” people in burnout.

This is why burnout usually worsens.
