The Two Greatest Dangers Of Growth
Where So Many People Go Wrong On The Path To Their Potential, Which Wrecks Their Results
Everyone always talks about How They are Growing.
In their Lives.
In their Professions.
In their Health.
It can Sound Inspiring and Absolutely Incredible.
But if You Pay Attention...
You'll Notice that Most People Who Talk About Growth...
Disappear Over Time.
Gone.
Vanished.
This Even happens with Names of People Who, at one time, were Considered "Experts" and "Thought Leaders".
But How Does this Happen?
How is it that People Get Incredible Gains from Growth...
But then Seem to Disappear?
The Reason is that, Frequently, these Individuals Fall for some of the Traps of Growth.
This even happens to People Who "Know" that these Traps Exist.
In Particular, there are Two Dangers that People Often Fall Prey To.
What are those Two Dangers of Growth?
The First Danger is Believing that You Have Grown Enough.
This Frequently Happens with "Experts" and "Masters".
They have Worked Hard at Learning All to Know about their Craft.
They sometimes even become Recognized as "The Best" of that Craft.
Then, something Subtle Happens.
In their Mind, they Believe that have Grown Enough.
They Reached the Goal.
They Attained Success.
It is Everything that They Hoped For and Were Promised about Getting to "That" Level.
So what Happens?
They Stop Growing.
But the Problem Here is that Life Continues.
Success is Not Static.
Growth is Not Static.
It is Earned Daily and Moment by Moment.
So the Individual Stops Focusing on the Basics that Took them to the Top.
They Might Also Start Working on Something Different.
But the Problem?
If You are Not Growing By Intentional Choice...
Then You are Decaying by Default.
It is Usually Subtle at First...
But just as Growth tends to Gain Momentum Over Time...
So Does Decay.
When at One Point You May have been at the Top...
Suddenly, You are Tumbling Down the Mountain at Breakneck Speeds.
As the Momentum Sets In...
It will Feel like the Carpet is being Pulled from Under You.
You "Attempt" to Rise Back Up, but the Momentum of Falling has Grown which makes it All the More Difficult.
You Stopped Being an Exemplar, so People Begin to Lose Faith in You.
This Frequently Becomes Worse for Many People because they have Overidentified with their Role...
Then, when the Role Disappears?
They Feel they Also Lost Their Identity.
This Causes All Sorts of Mental Dis-Stress which can become Extremely Difficult to Overcome.
I have Watched Organizations Decide they Received "Enough" Growth to Succeed...
Only to Watch it All Crumble Later.
Growth is an Everlasting Process.
It Does Not End.
But...
Knowing this Sometimes Leads People to the Second Greatest Danger of Growth...
Thinking They Should Speed Up their Growth.
Now, sometimes You "Can" Speed Up a Bit, do not get me wrong.
There are Times when You Should Charge Forward.
Yet...
If You Do Not Know When You Should...
Or When You Should Not...
It can Quickly become Perilous.
Why?
All Change is a Stressor.
Growth is itself a Form of Change.
Now, Stressors are Not Inherently "Positive" Nor "Negative".
Any Stressor "Can" Be Either.
It is All a Matter of Timing and How You Do It.
Let's take Working Out as a Classic Example.
We All Know that Working Out is Considered Beneficial...
Right?
Well, it Depends.
Working Out is a Stressor.
You Put Stress on Your Muscles, which Break Down in the Moments of Working Out...
Then Later, especially during Sleep, the Muscles being to Rebuild Themselves.
If You Do This Correctly, it becomes a Beneficial Stressor, or a Eu-Stress.
The Body Builds Up Stronger Muscles and We Become Healthier.
However...
This is Not Everyone's Experience.
Why?
Because they Decide they Want to Grow Faster.
So, What Do They Do?
The Add "Significantly" More Stressors via Too Much Working Out...
Either at Too High of Intensity or with More Weight than their Body can Handle at that Moment...
Then, they Fail to Recover Enough to Recouperate...
With the Final Result being that their Working Out actually becomes a Dis-Stress to their Body and they Break...
Sometimes Literally.
Does this Make Working Out Bad?
No.
But What It "Does" Mean is that We Have to Be Careful about Our Total Stressors at Any Given Time.
If We Push Our Bodies "Beyond" Our Stress Capacity, or Our Stress Threshold, we Enter Dis-Stress.
Which with Enough Dis-Stress, Especially when Maintained Over a Period of Time...
Can Completely Wreck the Results that You Were Working So Hard to Obtain.
I just had this Recently Occur with a Client of Mine.
For Months, they had been Making Wonderful Progress.
Truly, it was Significantly More than I Expected.
But it was because we Created a Plan based on their Current Psychophysiology which allowed us to Progress Quickly.
But Not "Too" Quickly.
So what Happened?
Well, they went away for 2 Weeks to Spend Time with Family...
Nothing Bad on the Surface, as it is always Good to Spend Time with Family.
However, the Problem is that the Client was Encouraged by Other Members of their Family to Push Faster.
The Old, Wow, if you're getting Results, You Should Do More!
Unfortunately, they Did Do More...
Then Went Past their Stress Threshold...
Putting them in Dis-Stress...
Extreme Levels of Dis-Stress...
And, Sadly, even in Only Two Weeks, they Fell Significantly Backward.
Based on their Psychophysiological Data Coming Back...
I Estimate We Lost Over a Month's Work of Progress.
Which, We Will have to Reverse before We Can Hope to Get Back to Growing Again.
Here's the Reality We Must Face...
Growth is Not a Simple Matter of "Yes or No".
Either You've "Done It or Not".
Growth is a Process that is in Continuous Flux.
One where Many People Do Not Understand the Profound Psychophysiology that is Involved.
Which makes it Very Easy to Fall into the Traps of Growth and Wreck the Growth that You Worked So Hard to Obtain.
But, the Good News is that...
Every Moment is a New Moment.
Even if You Lose Ground to One of these Traps...
You can Grow Anew Starting Now.
By Nature, We Seek Growth...
Our Bodies Want and Need Growth.
But, We Must be Wary about "How" We Grow as Well.
Give Yourself the Opportunity to Grow into Your Potential.
