The Differentiator Between Good And The Best
Written by a human, for humans, always.
I was at an event recently...
In the crowd...
Watching a group of individuals who were considered some of the best in their industry.
As humans, we have an innate draw to see people at their best.
To experience a level of awe and the sublime.
But there was something that I noticed amongst the group.
They were all good.
But one of the individuals...
They stood out above the rest.
But why?
Everyone at that event was extremely talented.
They all should have been there.
They all earned their spot.
But what was it about this individual that made them stand out even amongst a high level of talent?
It was a spark of excellence.
What do I mean?
There are always people who rise to the top...
Who are able to perform the moves required...
Who does it with practiced precision.
Technically, they are perfect.
But there are some people...
Who reach another level within their industry...
Where they are not just technically perfect...
But they become more.
They are not just doing or performing...
They become.
They are a complete expression of their skills...
Each move they make is not just structured within their art...
But is something they are living completely.
They are not dancing...
Their dance is them.
The two become one...
Indistinguishable.
Often this spark of excellence is subtle...
But once you see it...
It becomes undeniable.
They are not doing...
They are living.
It is a level that is actually rarely achieved...
Even within the highest levels of any industry.
But when this spark of excellence is discovered...
It is the type of experience that redefines industries.
In the study of flow research, there are levels within flow.
Most people have experienced some level of flow state...
Often with people they enjoy being around where time either flew by or felt so much longer than normal.
These states are necessary to reach the highest levels of potential within any skillset...
(Which is where many people struggle - Getting into flow consistently and when they need it most)...
But within these states, there are different levels and expressions.
There is a level where we perform at the highest level that we have access to at any given time...
Which can continue to grow as you continue to develop your skills.
However, where the spark of excellence becomes possible...
Requires a level where skill and our identity begin to meld into one.
Where you are not just doing...
But you are expressing...
Not just a level of identity that we wear within different contexts...
What is known as a Mask or Transitory Identity...
But a level of Identity that is our truest self, beyond the level of what we do or who we are around other people...
What is known as our Core Identity.
What is important to understand with this...
Is that “what” we are doing is “not” our Core Identity...
Rather, what we do “reveals” an aspect of our Core Identity “beyond” what we are doing.
The identity of “Athlete” is not the Core Identity, but when the Athlete wears that Identity, we can “see” who they are behind the mask of “Athlete”.
The identity of “Dancer” is not the Core Identity, but when the Dancer wears that Identity, we can “see” who they are behind the mask of “Dancer”.
The Identity of “Parent” is not the Core Identity, but when the Parent wears that Identity, we can “see” who they are behind the mask of “Parent”.
What we begin to see...
Is that it is not what we are “doing”...
But rather what we are “revealing” through what we do.
This is where the difference becomes revealed between the good and the best.
The good put on their Mask...
And they can even be at the top of their industry based on a high level of mastery of their skills...
But the Mask doesn’t reveal any aspect of who they are.
Not beyond a surface level.
But the best...
When they put on the Mask...
We begin to understand that the Mask itself is not the what is important...
That the Mask is a mode of expression of something vastly more important...
Their Core Identity.
In this sense...
They are not the Mask...
But the Mask becomes a focusing tool that they utilize for us to see them fully.
Like using a magnifying glass to sharpen the rays of the sun.
The magnifying glass is not the sun...
But when used in a specific way, it helps us understand the vast power of the sun in a way that is undeniable.
That is what we are experiencing when we encounter the spark of excellence...
The person is the sun...
The Mask they are wearing becomes the magnifying glass...
Which becomes focused on us, where we experience awe and the sublime.
But why is this not something that everyone can do?
Because to accomplish this level of mastery...
You must not only have the magnifying glass...
You must understand that you are the sun...
And then position the magnifying glass in such a way to focus your rays.
This becomes the challenge for most people, though...
Because they do not believe themselves to be the sun...
They believe they are the magnifying glass.
In this way...
They may use the magnifying glass in fantastic ways...
But never discover how to use the magnifying glass to focus their rays of self.
This is the truth in the world today...
So few people really have a deep connection and understanding of their Core Identity.
Even among people who believe they know...
There are few who deeply grasp their Core Identity in such a way that they can purposefully focus their innate selves through a medium with distinct precision.
That is the true differentiator between the good and the best.
That awe-inspiring and sublime understanding of themselves through what they do.
