The Seven Levels Of Scientific Research
Understanding The Quality Of Your Scientific Beliefs
I have Clients ask me about Different Aspects of Science Frequently.
And I Get It...
The World of Science is Really Difficult in Today's World.
Between Misinformation...
Lies...
And People who are Well-Intentioned but Poorly Informed...
It is Really Difficult to Know "What" to Trust.
Or How Valid Something May or May Not Be.
Especially when We are Constantly Barraged with Claims and Marketing that are Designed to Convince Us.
So, whenever I begin to Look Into Something Scientifically to Form My Own Understanding...
I have Seven Levels of Research that I Utilize to Judge, Clarify, and Understand Topics.
The Level of Research can be a Good Indicator for the Quality of What You're Looking At, and Whether You Should Proceed Further.
What are the Seven Levels?
Well, it Begins with Level 0...
Yes, I Realize this Makes "8" Total Levels, but I Purposefully have Designed it this Way.
What is Level 0?
Social Media.
Anyone can Claim Nearly Anything on Social Media...
And there are Absolutely No Consequences to What they Say.
Honestly, I would say that, from My Experience, 99% of What I Find On Social Media is Completely and Utterly Scientifically Invalid...
And Often Completely Misunderstood.
Plus it takes "No" Real Effort to Create Social Media Posts...
Especially with the Aid of AI...
Which is Also "Frequently" Incorrect when it Comes to Scientific Research...
Assuming it Does Not Make Up Its Own Junk Research Out of Nothing...
Which it "Has" Been Documented to Do Frequently.
Next, we have Level 1 Research...
Long-Form Video and Articles.
If You Read My Daily Articles, these would be Classified as Level 1 Research (Even though much of it is Based on Higher Levels).
Now, You "Need" to Be More Cohesive to Create a Compelling Long-Form Video or Article...
But often there is a Lot of Information that is Missing Information, and they Tend to Be Focused on Specific Aspects of a Topic...
Without Going "Too Deeply" into those Topics.
They Tend to be "More" Reliable than Social Media...
But Regularly Need More Information to Make it Extremely Useful.
This brings us to Level 2 Research...
Consumer Books.
These are the Types of Books that You Find Easily at Your Local Book Store.
Often, these Books are Much More In-Depth...
Usually, Requiring the Authors to Document the Research they Used to Write the Book...
Assuming they Use Real Research, which is Not Always True...
And it Should be Worrisome if There is No Research at All.
But, even when a Book is Well-Written and Well-Researched...
The Content is Often "Dumbed Down" to be More Easily Accessible.
The Problem with this...
Especially when it Comes to Science...
Is that We Live in Complex Systems.
The are Frequently Nuances which are Missed (Purposefully) in Book Written for Consumers because, admittedly, those Nuances are Difficult to Grasp...
And Consumer Written Books Need to "Sell" to Consumers to Succeed.
Now, over the Past Few Years, the Quality of Consumer Books has Also Decreased because the Barrier to Writing Consumer Books has Dramatically Decreased.
It is Good in Some Ways because More Perspectives are Able to be Heard...
But Sadly, Not Everyone's Perspective is Usable or Positive when it Comes to Science and the Quality of the Research.
I have Read "Many" Books that are "Truthy"...
They "Sound" Good...
But Higher Levels of Research Reveal that the Consumer Books are "Deeply" Flawed.
This Brings us to Level 3 Research...
Textbooks.
Textbooks are Designed to be Learning Tools for Individuals who are Serious about Learning a Subject.
They are Usually Designed for Higher Education Purposes, and because of this, Require Significantly More Detail and Research to be Accepted.
The Challenge with a Textbook, though, is that often, they are for "Introductory" Students to the Subject.
Yes, these Students often have Professional Goals, so the Textbooks "Must" Prepare them for those Professions...
But Often, Textbooks are Filled with Theory, or High Level Application...
And the Best Levels of Research Demand More "Hands-On" Understandings.
Which Brings us to Level 4 Research...
Courses and Certifications with Top Experts and Sages in an Industry.
Now I "Do" Need to Make Something Clear...
Not "Every" Course and Certification Qualifies for this Level.
Just as the Quality of Consumer Books has Decreased because of the Ease of Access to Write Them...
The Quality of Courses and Certifications has Decreased because of the Ease to Design Them.
But...
If You Find a "Quality" Course or Certification with Individuals who are "Truly" Experts and Sages of their Industries...
This becomes a Powerful Area where You can Gain More "Hands-On" Understanding and Application of an Area of Scientific Understanding.
This is the Beginning of Where Nuance is Better Understood...
And it is What Separates "Amateurs" and "Professionals" as Well.
If You are Working with Someone in a Professional Manner...
You want to Be "Certain" that "They" have "This" Level of Understanding.
This is the Level that You can Find Most Doctors of Any Subject (Medical or Otherwise).
The Problem Here, However, is that "Often" the Students are Trained to Think and Look at the World "Like" the Teach of these Programs.
This Can be a Good Thing...
But it Can Also be a Terrible Thing when Teachers are Using Outdated Methods and Protocols...
Which is Very Common...
Or When Teachers have Extreme Biases and are Unable to Even "Consider" Other Possibilities.
I have Met "Many" Teachers where these Were Extreme Problems.
But what Comes After This?
This Brings us to Level 5 Research...
Lower-Level Peer-Reviewed Scientific Research Papers.
Think of Papers that are Proposing Theories, Correlative Studies, Case Studies, and Cohort Studies.
All of these are Extremely Beneficial in Scientific Research and Can Help Us Understand things Better...
But they All also have Problems...
They are Susceptible to things like the Placebo Effect, Poor Research Methods, Finding Effects instead of Causes, and Working on Individual Problems without being able to be Expanded and Replicated...
Not to Mention that there is a Lot of Junk Research, Marketing Stunts Research, and "Research" that is Published that Never Actually Occurred.
These are Useful as a Starting Place to Understand True Science...
But there are Higher Levels that are Better Evidence.
It is Also Important to Know that "Many" People Never actually "Read" This Level of Research Themselves.
I have Looked at "Many" Products and Services that "Point" to these Types of Research Studies...
Make Claims on Websites, in Books, on Social Media, etc...
But When You "Read" The Studies that are Being Pointed To...
You Discover that the Research is Being "Grossly" Misrepresented.
This is Why it is Important to Look to the Next Level of Research...
Level 6 Research is...
Peer-Reviewed Randomized Control Trials.
This is where Research "Really" Begins to Become Important and Begins to "Prove" the Validity of Science.
Well-Conducted Randomized Control Trials help us Understand whether a Solution "Actually" Works...
Or if a Placebo is Equally Useful.
It Prevents both Researchers "And" Test Subjects from Knowing the Results and Accidentally Skewing the Results in the Process.
It Also Prevents "Other" Factors from Influencing the Results.
When these are Done Well...
They are "Really" Important in Our Understanding of Science...
"When" Done Well.
But Sadly, Even these are Subject to Problems Sometimes...
People Lying about Results...
Research Designed to Purposefully Get Certain Results...
Plus, of course, Research that Never Occurred.
All of these can Still Cause Problems with Research, which is Why there is One Gold Standard when it comes to Scientific Research...
Level 7 Research...
Meta-Analyses of Peer-Reviewed Research Papers.
This is where Researchers Compile "Many" of the Peer-Reviewed Research Papers together and Write an Analysis of the Trends.
What is Powerful about this is that, Often, Meta-Analyses are able to Determine when Bad Actors are at Play.
They will Identify when Results have Not be Repeatable...
They will Identify when there is a Significant Difference between a Lower-Level and Higher-Level of Research...
And because the Meta-Analyses are Not "Directly" Researching the Topics...
They Rely on "Other" Research...
Meaning that they have to "Show" All the Research that Went into the Meta-Analysis...
Which Means You Can "Verify" if the Conclusions of the Meta-Analysis Actually Make Sense...
Or if the People who Conducted the Meta-Analysis had Biases or Agendas Themselves in Writing the Analysis.
This Truly becomes the "Check" of Valid and Well-Designed Research.
Now that You Understand the Levels of Research...
You have the Power to Understand the Quality of Your Scientific Beliefs.
Where are You Getting Your Information From?
Are You Purely Getting Information from Level 0 Research?
Or are You Looking at the Meta-Analyses Yourself and Verifying the Validity of their Conclusion?
This is also a Great Measure to Determine How Well-Studied something is...
And Whether Claims are Justified or Greatly Exaggerated.
You May have to Start at a Lower Level and Work Your Way Up the Levels.
If You've Never Read a Consumer Book on a Scientific Topic...
You May Struggle to Understand the Meta-Analyses of that Topic and Not Truly be able to Decipher whether their Determinations are Valid or Not.
This can Also be a Great Test to Determine the Quality of a Professional that You're Working With...
Can they Point You to High-Level Research for their Beliefs...
Or are they Relying on their Courses and Certifications to "Prove" What they Know?
Or Perhaps All they Know is a Book and that is the Only Thing that they are Basing their Knowledge On...
Which is Similar to Copying Someone's Work and Saying that You've "Mastered" that Subject.
But the Goal...
Is that Over Time, You want to Make Your Way "Up" the Levels of Research...
So That You are Well-Informed...
And Make Decisions on Your Health and Wellness that are Based in Reality for Your Own Benefit.
