The Problem With Time
A Subconscious Reason That We Struggle With Our Time
Written by a human, for humans, always.
How is your relationship with time?
Most people struggle with time.
They feel like they wasted time.
That they do not have enough time.
They are not investing their time correctly.
But...
Did you catch it?
Something similar that runs throughout all of these phrases?
Phrases that we use so unconsciously...
That we miss what is implied by them?
Think about it...
Wasted...
Enough...
Investing...
All of these see time as something we own...
Like money.
It is all metaphorical language that puts a value on time...
That we harness...
Control...
Rule.
Perhaps we do not realize this consciously...
But at a subconscious level...
We are telling ourselves that we “own” time...
Which may be the exact reason why we struggle with it so much.
Think about it.
If I were to ask you, “How are you spending your time?”
It already places an image of time as money...
Which is similar to another phrase we have, “Time is money”.
So, subconsciously, we begin to metaphorically think of time “like” money...
Something we own.
So we think about how we are “using” that time that we own...
And sometimes we might be “using” it wisely...
Or “using” it poorly...
But the frame of reference still sees it as something we are “using”...
Because we “own” it.
But do we actually own time?
I think it is fairly clear to most people who are not delusional that we clearly do not own time...
That we simply move along the flow of time at a pace that we never really control.
If anything...
Time owns us...
Walking us along the path like a dog on a leash until we eventually find out we have reached the end.
But when we “believe” we own time...
Even if only at a subconscious level...
We consider time in the same way we consider money.
We do not make a “purchase” with our time if the cost is too high.
We worry about how we “spend” our time.
We regret how we “spent” our time.
We look at our “investments” of time to see if they are creating “profit”.
The result?
We end up devauluing time...
We look at time spent in terms of a return on investment...
Demeaning it to what it provides physically...
But fail to see what true value is in life.
What makes this even more difficult...
Is that we subconsciously see time in this way...
Not just at an individual level...
But at the societal level.
This is how just about everyone subconsciously thinks and talks about time.
That is one of the interesting things about metaphors...
Using them in some ways can help us understand something...
Such as time, which is invisible, having some sort of value, like money.
But in other ways...
We can begin to associate these metaphors too closely together and begin to associate them in such a way that takes away from things.
So, what can we do about this?
Well, we have a few options.
We can try to shift our metaphors by stopping the usage of how we talk.
This may be practical on an individual level...
But it is significantly harder at the societal level when something is already so ingrained.
But there is another option as well...
That can be combined with the former if we so choose.
Expand the metaphors.
What impact would this have?
Twofold.
It thins out the metaphors solely related to ownership...
Diluting the power it has over us...
While simultaneously adding more understanding in such a way...
That we gain a greater subconscious understanding of what it is like...
So that we stop being so limited in our deeper understanding of it.

I’m going to do something different than what I normally do.
I am going to come up with other phrases to help in this process.
Perhaps not all metaphors, but they will provide the imagery we are aiming at.
