The Problem Of Personal Growth

Where People Usually Go Wrong

There has been a gigantic movement for personal growth over the years...

And indeed, it is a positive thing.

We, as humans, do need growth.

It is beneficial to our minds...

Our hearts...

Our souls.

When we look at our psychophysiology, it has so many health benefits.

Yet...

I have noticed that many people still do not end up where they want to be in life.

They pursue personal growth...

But still struggle to make it to the places they want in life.

Why is that though?

How is that something that is supposed to be so beneficial for us...

Still ends in a result that is less than hoped for?

Well, it has to do with misunderstandings with how growth works...

And some very human things that get in the way.

To help you understand...

We talk about growth as an overwhelmingly positive thing.

But...

Is all growth good?

Not necessarily.

There are many things in life where we consider growth to be a bad thing.

Growth of weeds...

Growth of invasive species...

Growth of parasitic infections...

Growth of addictions...

All of these are different examples where growth may not necessarily be a good outcome.

But this can happen within the realm of personal growth as well.

Sometimes, we believe that we are on a certain path of growth...

Or are convinced to pursue a path...

But it ends up being less than ideal for us.

Psychologically speaking though...

When we “believe” that all personal growth is good...

And we have already begun a specific path of personal growth...

This can cause us to fall into what is known as...

The Sunk Cost Fallacy.

This means...

We become reluctant to pursue any other potential areas of growth...

Because we have already spent a certain amount of time, energy, money on “this” path...

So we decide to “stay” on this path...

Even if it is not beneficial to us.

That is no different than any of the above mentioned types of negative growth...

Just a different form of negative growth.

But it still goes further than this.

How?

Self-Limitation.

Often...

We as humans have so much more potential than we realize.

But the problem...

Is that we usually create self-imposed limitations on what our potential is.

There are paths we say “we” cannot pursue...

Are not right for...

Areas of life and industries that we are not cut out for...

We tell ourselves no...

It is not possible...

Not us...

But not because it is not within our power...

Rather because we simply do not “believe” or “think” it is within our power.

What we fail to understand though...

Is how adaptable we are as humans...

And what is known as Strength Transfer.

Often, we know about our own strengths...

But we fall into a trap of believe that those strengths can only fit into certain types of careers and paths.

If you’re good at math, then you go into accounting or astrophysics.

If you’re good with people, then you go into sales or speaking.

There are many ways we look at these and think about them.

But the truth is that many of these forms of classifications...

Are not true.

They are preconceived notions of how these different industries and careers work.

If you actually look more closely...

You may end up discovering that your strengths...

Whatever they are...

Can become adapted to work in almost any form of work or industry that you can imagine.

Sometimes, it requires us to look at specific aspects of work or industries...

Other times it may come from creating all new jobs and roles that do not yet exist.

Sports was thought to be solely the domain of jocks until statisticians discovered how they could utilize their skills to build greater teams based on numbers.

Aircraft were a mystery until two brothers who made and fixed bicycles figured out how to apply their knowledge in a new way.

In both of these examples, and so many more...

Industries were completely changed and careers we designed...

All through Strength Transfer.

So, what does this bring us to?

Growth is good, yes...

But further than this, we need Cultivation.

It is about Growing in beneficial directions...

Trimming the aspects of our lives that do not contribute positively...

Sometimes even requiring us to change our entire environment so that we can expand into our potential.

We need to break away from the Sunk Cost Fallacy...

And be open to the idea that just because we have spent time, energy, and resources toward one area of growth...

Does not mean we cannot transfer what we’ve gained into new and different areas of life...

Which may allow us to shatter our self-limitations that have been created over the years.
