The Power Of Stepping Away
How Proper Rest And Recovery Becomes A Superpower
So many people have their heads buried in everything that they are working on.
I get it...
There is truth in the idea that you need to work hard.
If you do not work hard...
You will not get what you want out of life.
But there is another truth that many people fail to remember...
Too much of a good thing can become bad.
Most people who look at work tend to fall into two “extremes”...
Either do the minimum to maintain what you have...
Or dedicate everything possible to the work that you are doing.
This second extreme is not beneficial.
Too much becomes bad.
But how does it become bad?
When you understand psychophysiology, you discover that there are a few negative consequences.
Let us start with our thinking.
Most people understand that our ability to think is one of our greatest powers.
It is...
But few people actually understand what it actually means.
When it comes to thinking...
There are two sides to the coin that are extremely important...
The conscious and the subconscious.
What most people understand as “thinking” occurs in the conscious brain.
It is where plans are cemented, and ideas are understood.
But this is what most people fail to understand...
Conscious thinking is slow...
Extremely slow...
Especially compared to subconscious thinking.
How much slower?
The conscious brain is like trying to solve a problem on a sticky note...
While the subconscious is like solving a problem with a NASA supercomputer.
Which do you think is faster?
Yes, you “can” solve the problem on a sticky note...
But it is horribly slow.
Now, the conscious mind is still important...
It is where you set up the components of the problem you’re trying to solve...
And where the ultimate solution is tested and verified...
But to solve the problem faster...
You need the subconscious to process the information in between.
And that becomes the problem when you have your head buried in your work...
You never give the subconscious mind an opportunity to work.
When you are always doing...
You are constantly working on sticky notes...
And attempting to find pieces of the answers that are written on hundreds of different sticky notes...
While not losing track of where other pieces are.
Can you see the problem here?
There is simply too much for you to keep track of.
Which is where we begin to see the power of stepping away.
When we “truly” step away...
We can upload the individual sticky notes to the subconscious supercomputer...
And let it work.
But this only works...
If you take the time to upload the sticky notes...
And upload enough of the necessary components for the subconscious to complete the problem.
If you lose a sticky note because you have spent too long staying in the conscious mind...
Then the subconscious will fail to complete the puzzle...
But there is a missing piece...
Or pieces.
Yet, with the right pieces uploaded to the supercomputer...
We will get solutions faster...
What many people call “epiphanies”.
There is a reason that many people have their best ideas in the shower...
The shower is one of the few places where people actually take time to step away...
And the subconscious begins to work.
But this is not the only aspect of psychophysiology that is important to understand.
We can also look at the Burnout factor.
As our bodies function...
We utilize resources like Mg-ATP, create exhaust like Oxidative Stress, and portions of our bodies will break down.
This is a natural process that happens for everyone.
You cannot avoid this.
But there is good news.
Our bodies have a way to overcome all of this...
And it is through recovery.
Eating.
Movement.
Sleep.
These allow us rebuild the body...
Often better than it was before.
But for many people, this becomes a great problem for them...
Because they fail to recover enough.
The result is that their bodies began to break down...
Further and further into decay.
This is a high-level understanding of what happens in burnout.
We are in a state of deep decay.
What happens to our productivity in burnout?
It crashes.
In a best-case scenario...
The research shows that our productivity potential drops to 5%...
And that is the “best-case” scenario.
Many people will actually drop into negative productivity...
Where they fail to make significant progress...
Constantly get lost and fall behind...
And make so many mistakes that they never actually are productive.
That has become the norm in today’s workplace, where over 80% of the workforce is in states of burnout.
But this is where, again, we find a power of stepping away.
Instead of allowing ourselves to decay into burnout...
If we step away...
And allow ourselves to recover...
Even to a “normal” level, we will become 4x more productive than the majority of the workforce...
And if we are then able to attain consistent flow states...
Where we feel and perform at our best...
Then we gain the ability to become 20x more productive than the majority of the workforce.
Can you understand how powerful stepping away becomes?
Still, though, we can gain more by stepping away.
How?
It has to do with energy, or Mg-ATP.
We need to produce enough energy to support any activities that we do at any given time.
But what happens when we never stop?
We end up being low on energy...
Constantly.
What makes this is a problem is that it puts on body on alert.
If we encounter stressors while we are simultaneously on low energy...
It is likely to become a problem within our nervous system.
What happens?
When we experience significant stressors...
Such as when we have a stressor occur when our bodies are already on high alert from low-energy...
There will be what is known as “aspects” of whatever caused the stressor, which will get stored within the nervous system in what is called a memory capsule.
Now, alone that is not a problem...
But when we are constantly in low-energy...
We never get the opportunity to “clear” these memory capsules.
The result is that these memory capsules remain stored in the nervous system...
And whenever we encounter anything remotely “similar” to the aspect stored in the memory capsule...
It triggers the nervous system to go into sympathetic activation...
Or fight-or-flight.
This is an issue because the more this happens...
The more likely it will be for our nervous system to go off...
And in this sympathetic activation...
Our ability to act well in the world becomes compromised.
Our problem-solving decreases...
We struggle to think clearly...
And we struggle to make positive changes that we need in our lives.
But...
If we step away...
We can work on clearing the memory capsules that no longer serve us...
And this can allow us to act more clearly in the world around us.
When you combine all of these...
It helps explain how there is a potent power in stepping away.
While most people are struggling through life...
You will have the superpower to handle everything going on around you.
