How Being Open To Something Different Can Create New Opportunities
Careers are an Interesting Aspect of Life.
We ask Young Children what they want to Be when they Grow Up...
As if "That" is Going to be their Entire Career.
We do the Same Thing to Students Preparing to Enter University...
As if Any of Us Know what We want to Do as Teenagers.
Then we Spend Years of Our Lives...
Dedicating Ourselves to a Career...
And Then?
Well, that is where it always seems to get Very Interesting.
A Few People Land and Keep a Single Career their Entire Lives...
But it seems to be Less Frequent.
I Know My Career has Been...
Nothing...
Like that.
When I was Really Young, I thought the Idea of becoming a Paleontologist would be a Fascinating Career...
I Probably Watched Jurassic Park a Few Too Many Times.
Then, when I was preparing for University...
I wanted to be a Professional Lacrosse Player and a Counseling Psychologist.
Neither of those Options Survived University, though...
Especially because the Psychology Program at my University was Focused on Scientific Research instead of Counseling...
And Instead, I graduated with a Business Degree with a Focus in Accounting.
Which is where I Started My "White Collar" Career.
Two Years into that Career...
I Knew it was Not what I wanted to Do the Rest of My Life.
My Decision to Change Careers only became Easier when I was Laid Off...
Another Trend that has Been Growing in Our World.
This, Mixed with the Terrible Leadership Experience that I had from the Lay Off started me on the Path to a Leadership Coach, Speaker, and Teacher.
I Felt that I Could Help the World Overcome the Leadership Deficiency that was becoming More and More Apparent to Me.
I started to Believe "That" was Going to be the Rest of My Career...
But it Wasn't.
As I began to Dive Deeper into the Industry, I began to Notice things that Seemed Wrong to Me.
Despite the Industry being worth $350 Billion (At Its Height), I did Not see the World's Leaders Improving...
What I saw was that things were Getting Worse.
It Really Struck when I Saw a Statistic...
80% of Leadership Development Programs "Completely" Fail...
With "Minimal" Success, the Remainder.
As I Dove Deeper into the Problems...
I Saw the Truth.
The Model was Broken.
So, I Sought to Build a New Model.
I Focused on Where I Felt Leaders Were Most Held Back...
Psychophysiology in Peak Performance.
It made a Lot of Sense when there was a Growing Problem...
Burnout.
Which was Expanding.
Today, it Impacts Over 80% of the Workforce.
All Due to Psychophysiological Reasons.
So, I started to Look More and More Deeply into Multiple Aspects of Psychophysiology.
As I Learned More, I Decided that it would be Good to Reveal the Connections I was Making.
So I also became a Digital Writer.
As I Began to Write...
My Thoughts and Ideas began to Become Clearer, and I Began to Create Something New.
I worked on Being an Exemplar in my Psychophysiology, which has allowed me to Also become a Semi-Professional Athlete.
But I Also Further Discovered that I Needed a New Category to Express Many Aspects of My Work...
Which I Began to Call Sageship.
My Work began to become More and More Recognized...
And Even Today, there are some Interesting Developments that are Happening in My Career...
Developments that I am Positive will Lead to Incredibly Powerful Developments to Improve the World.
But What Exactly Happened that Allowed for All of this to Happen?
What Pushed Me to Accept These Career Change Ups?
Especially when, in Many Ways...
Many of These Career Change Ups could be Entire Careers on their Own if I Wanted.
Well, it has to Do with Sageship and Flow States.
See, one of the Core Concepts of Sageship is to Push the Boundaries of Your Industry...
To Ask the Questions that Others Fail to See.
To Find Answers that No One Knows.
That is an Important Part of Why I Began, and Continue, to look at Career Changes.
These are Opportunities to Find Connections that Others have Failed to See.
Often, because We, as Humans, Become Siloed in Our Careers.
Those Industries become Stale and Static in their Thoughts and Ideas.
People begin to Repeat the Same Things Over and Over Again...
Without Knowing Where They Came From...
Or If They Are True.
I have Found, More than Once, that Many of the Things We Believe are "True" within Different Industries are Based on Falsehoods and Misunderstandings...
But they Remain because We have Failed to Ask Questions.
By Moving through Career Change Ups...
We can Begin to See and Ask Questions that No One has Ever Thought Of.
It can Open New Opportunities.
But it can Go Further with Flow States.
How?
We, as Humans, are At Our Best in Flow States.
Our Creativity Increases.
Our Problem-Solving Increases.
Our Learning Speed Increases.
Our Ability to Process Information Increases.
We are Five Times More Productive than the Average Person...
Or Twenty Times More Productive than the Person in Burnout.
What Do All Of These Accomplish?
Specifically, When Combined With Career Change Ups?
The Ability to Find New Paths and Create New Possibilities.
Everything that Flow States Provides contributes to Designing Opportunities for You that have Never Existed.
True Exponential Innovation.
Not Miniscule Linear Innovations that have Little to No Impact on the Industry at Large.
Rather Revolutionary Change...
With Industry Altering...
Or Industry Creating Potential.
Further, based on Flow Research...
These Types of Changes Nearly "Always" Come from Cross-Industry Information being Exchanged.
What Does This Mean?
If You Truly Seek Sageship...
Then it Becomes Necessary to have Career Change Ups.
These are the Catalysts that Birth True Sages in the World.
Career Change Ups Provide New Perspectives that Elude Others.
They are How the Future is Created.
The World has a Tendency to Push the Idea of Keeping and Growing a Singular Career...
But All of the Evidence that Exists Suggests that Career Change Ups Provide the Greatest Opportunities for Our Lives.
Be Open to the Power of Career Change Ups.
