The Paradoxical Value Of A Little
How To Accomplish More Than You Imagined Possible With Less Effort
Written by a human, for humans, always.
Most people put value in the wrong things.
Let me give you an example.
I’m a big fan of doing obstacle course racing.
I’ve even gotten some sponsorships.
If you are unfamiliar with them...
They are races over different distances...
I typically do distances between 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and 50 kilometers (31 miles).
And along the way...
You do obstacles...
Such as monkey bars, boulder carries, rope climbs, jumping over walls, etc...
Which I typically do anywhere between 20 and 60 during the course of a race.
Now here’s the question...
How much training would you do for that?
Most people would believe that they need to do a lot of training.
Dozens of miles per week.
Many hours working out at the gym every other day.
But...
Is that sustainable?
For most people, it is not.
It certainly is not for me.
So how much training do I do?
Just a little.
1 mile run minimum...
Every day...
Which I’ve done for over 700 days.
Then...
Mostly body weight workouts...
Here and there...
Rarely over 5 minutes at a time.
I know what you’re thinking...
That doesn’t seem like it is enough.
Right?
How can that be enough?
The reason is that people put too much value in a lot...
But not nearly enough in a little.
It is paradoxical, but it is true.
How do I know?
I set a new personal record in today’s race...
Making all but 1 of the obstacles...
23rd overall in the elite race.
Not too bad for someone who trains in this manner.
But this is just one example in my life.
I could also tell you how this has worked out for my career.
What do you think had a bigger impact on my business?
Hosting a 3-day leadership event with 15 experts...
Or writing 250 words minimum per day?
As much fun as the event was...
It produced very few results.
Writing on the other hand...
Every single day...
Just a small amount...
Has led to more stages...
Being awarded and nominated for over 100 awards...
Including making it into the Hall of Fame as a Leadership Coach...
And ending up on a billboard in Times Square, New York...
All because of writing.
Not a lot...
Just a little...
Bit by bit...
Day by day...
Until now, where I have written for over 1,200 days in a row.
Why is it that so many people fail to see the value of a little...
But overestimate the value of a lot?
What most people fail to see...
Is sustainability.
See...
Doing a lot...
Requires a lot of energy...
Energy that you cannot continue to dedicate...
Unless that is “all” you do with your life...
Creating other problems for you and your health...
Which, even if you “do” dedicate all of your life to that...
It may still be too much physically...
Leading to burnout...
A significant decrease in efficiency and results...
And a crash.
In burnout, our productivity potential drops to 5% or less, according to research...
And we can, and often do, go into negative productivity.
But...
Doing a little bit...
Is completely sustainable...
While simultaneously living a full life...
Giving you the opportunity to maintain your health...
And over time...
That little bit ends up adding up to significantly more than most people realize.
According to the stats that I have...
I have written enough to fill between 14 and 22 nonfiction books, based on average word count...
In less than 3.5 years.
How many books does someone typically write when they are dedicated to actually writing books in their entire career?
Usually far less...
Especially if their entire career is not solely writing.
The reason...
Is that writing a book requires a “lot” of dedicated energy that is unsustainable to maintain for most people.
But I can write 250 words or more with ease...
Especially as writing has become a consistent habit...
Which drastically decreases the energy required...
Because developing habits also develops energy (Mg-ATP) pathways, making them vastly more efficient and easier to maintain over time.
By focusing on a little...
You create something sustainable...
You build momentum...
You build skills...
You build habits...
Which create a powerful force that begins to become unstoppable.
This is how you begin to accomplish more than you imagined possible.
