The Paradox Of Progress

The Paradox Of Progress
Reflecting On Recent Events On My Birthday
Written by a human, for humans, always.
Never would I have ever imagined I would be here.
Now, when you say something like that...
It can end up being extremely terrible...
Or truly wonderful.
I am blessed to say that, for me, it is currently the second category.
There have been points in my life where it was the former...
Where I had believed that I had no future...
That I thought so absolutely little of myself that I believed myself to be valueless...
Contemplating the idea of ending the show early.
What a terrible tragedy that would have been.
I am so thankful today that I had God...
That I sought to have my burdens lifted from my shoulders...
So that I could have Peace.
That does not mean that every day was easy...
Challenges still come up in life.
Things do not always go my way.
I struggle.
Yet...
I have been rewarded with so much value in my short life.
Today I am 33 years old.
In Hobbit years (from J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth), I would only just today be considered an adult.
When Tolkien was writing, he imagined that in a world and place of relative peace...
That aging happened over a longer period of time...
And that there would be more joy in the process as you discovered who you were.
Indeed...
I believe he had a valid point.
Even into this past year, I have been discovering aspects of myself I would have once believed impossible.
What I have considered as my “career” has dramatically changed since I graduated from university.
I considered becoming an accountant at one point...
Owning a martial arts studio...
Before I landed on becoming a leadership coach...
Which then developed into Sageship Coaching...
As well as becoming a Functional Medicine Practitioner, with four board certifications...
From the American Alternative Medicine Association, the American Association of Natural Wellness, the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, and the American Natural Wellness Coaches Board.
Not to mention my very recent appointment in the United Nations-recognized Order of International Experts, giving me the title of “His Excellency”...
Something that I suspect I will not get used to anytime soon.
If this is all possible by the age of 33...
What else is possible?
It is strange because none of where I am today was something I expected for my life.
It still feels very surreal.
Opportunities came...
Discoveries occurred...
Insights developed...
Then...
I was here.
Here is something that I believe most people miss when it comes to the development of their lives...
They care far too much.
What do I mean?
They care about how they are perceived.
They care about what makes sense or doesn’t make sense.
They care about whether something seems reasonable based on values they did not even choose or realize they had.
They care about the recognition and notoriety.
They care about the progress being seen by others.
Me?
I really do not.
At least, not anymore.
I used to at one time...
And I think we all have a phase of it...
But it ends up becoming a barrier.
Only when we seem to let go of trying to control our progress...
Only when we allow Faith to develop us as the opportunities come to us...
Do we seem to really unleash and obtain our potential.
It seems paradoxical...
That the more we attempt to control our progress...
The harder progress seems to be had...
But when we suddenly take small steps...
Moving in what we believe is generally the right direction...
But allowing everything to develop and change as it may...
Do we suddenly make all the progress vastly more easily.
In 33 years I have lived an extremely full life that I am grateful for...
But things only began to develop when I stopped trying to force things to happen...
And simply began to move while allowing things to happen.
It has not always been straight progress.
There have been detours...
Paths where I had believed the future was taking me which suddenly disappeared without notice...
Barriers that forced me to become creative...
But through it all...
By not being so attached to specific results...
I was able to navigate with more ease to further heights than I dreamed.
This is not the life that I had imagined for myself...
It has become so much more than I could have imagined.
The more tightly you grip...
The harder it becomes to let go...
Causing you to miss the opportunities that come.
But in the Paradox of Progress...
The more we allow ourselves to follow the rhythms of life...
In the highs and in the lows...
Suddenly we discover that there is so much more progress that can be made than we ever imagined.
