The Myth That Business Culture Is Resistant To Change

The Reality That Plays Out

I am currently a Nominee in the Running to Receive a Prestigious Award.

I cannot talk about the Specific Details yet, but I was Asked a Series of Questions about My Work as part of the Process.

As I was Asked Certain Questions...

I Noticed that there were a lot of Underlying Business Beliefs that Seemed to Recur.

Specifically...

That Business and Nature (Such as Human Wellbeing) are Separate.

They are Not.

A Great Example of this is this Idea...

Business Culture is Resistant to Change.

It is Not the First Time I have Heard People talk about this...

And it Will Not be the Last.

It is a Myth that has Existed in Business for a Long Time.

In Fact, I used to Believe it Myself.

That is a Consequence of Repetition Bias and the Frequency Illusion.

When We Hear Something Enough Times...

Regardless of whether it is True...

We are More likely to "Believe" it to Be True.

This Myth, that Business Culture is Resistant to Change, has Spread because it is Something that has Been Said.

But the Truth?

Business Culture is Constantly Changing.

It is Actually Impossible for Business to "Not" Change.

Change is an Absolute of Nature.

Change is Always Occuring.

Period.

Business is Not Magically "Immune" to the Reality of Nature.

But, We have Also All "Seen" Organizations that have Talked about Enacting Certain Changes and Struggling to "Do" Those Changes.

So, what is Actually Happening Then?

First, we have to Understand that "Change" can Mean Two Things...

Either Growth or Decay.

Everything in Life is Either Growing or Decaying.

But Both are Change.

All Businesses are Changing...

But...

Which Type of Change is the Question.

Are they in Growth or Decay?

All Businesses are Changing, and are Either Growing or Decaying.

Now, things like Revenue are Often Misleading to the Reality of this Change.

I Know "Many" Businesses that have Increasing Revenue, but are Absolutely Dead and Decaying Internally.

Those are what I call Zombie Businesses, quite Aptly Named because they are Decaying Internally like a Zombie.

So when people Say that a Business Culture is "Resistant to Change"...

That is Not Accurate.

What they Usually Mean is that the Business Culture is in a State of Decay, and is "Resistant" to Growth.

The State of Decay is Resistant to Growth, and the State of Growth is Resistant to Decay...

But the Business is Changing in Both Scenarios.

This, however, Brings Us to an Important Question.

If an Organization is Resistant to Growth, because it is Currently in a State of Decay...

What can be Done?

The Answer is...

It Depends.

Where is the Decay Stemming From?

See...

If You "Want" A Business Culture to Become a Culture of Growth...

You Must Identify what the Cause of Decay Is.

If the Decay Cannot be Resolved...

Then the Organization May Not be Worth Saving.

If this is the Situation, You may be Better Looking for a Different Organization (Or Creating a Better Organization).

If the Source of Decay can Be Removed Though...

There May be Hope for a Culture of Growth.

Now, Usually the Source of Decay comes from Somewhere in Leadership.

It "Might" be Intentional...

But Far More Often it is Unintentional, and Subconscious.

If it is the Latter, then it Simply Requires a Decision from Leadership to Seek Lasting Change.

This may Require Outside Help, but as Long as the Desire for Change and Growth Exists, then it is Possible.

If the Source of Decay is Intentional However...

There are Two Possbilities.

Either, You can Remove the Source of Decay (If Possible, Depending on the Level of the Leader)...

Or You can Focus on Turning the Rest of the Organization into a Culture of Growth...

Growth and Decay are Resistant to Each Other...

And if the Majority of the Organization becomes a Culture of Growth...

Either the Decay becomes Removed...

Or the Source of Decay Seeks Escape.

Just Recently, I saw this Occur with an Organization that I had Worked with where there was an Identified Source of Decay...

The Organization became a Culture of Growth...

And it Revealed the Reality of the Source of Decay, which led to that Source No Longer Working at the Organization.

A Business Culture is Not Resistant to Change.

The Type of Change, Growth or Decay, Creates a Natural Resistance to the Other Type of Change...

But the Culture is Always Changing...

Either to Growth or Decay.

So...

If You Discover Resistance Toward a Specific Type of Change...

Then You have Also Learned What Type of Change is Occurring in the Organization.

If You are Actively Trying to Positively Grow an Organization and Find Resistance...

Then the Culture is Reflecting a State of Decay.

Indeed, this is the Norm in Today's World.

Burnout is a Psychophysiological State of Decay.

Literally.

In Fact, it "Can" and "Has" Caused Death...

Even in Individuals as Young as their 20s.

How Does That Happen?

Those Individuals are Working at a Decaying Organization, a Zombie Business.

The Decay May be "Masked" Well...

But these Organizations are Putting a Pretty Dress and Makeup on the Decay of their Zombie Flesh, and Making a Runway Show to Distract Others from the Reality.

It Does Fool Many People...

But it Cannot Fool Everyone.

Eventually...

People Begin to See the Rot and Decay for What it Is...

And Revolt Against the Zombie Business.

Which We Also See with things like Active Disengagement, Quiet Quitting, Protests, and Other Signs of a Decaying Business Culture.

This is a Natural Response from a Decaying Culture...

And from Individuals who Seek Growth.

They are Resistant to Each Other.

But the Reality is that Decay Cannot Last Forever.

Eventually, the Decay has Nothing Left, and Becomes Dust.

So, it is in Our Best Interest to Seek Growth...

Stay Resistant to Decay...

Create Cultures of Growth where We are Able...

And Escape Cultures of Decay if We are Unable, Lest We Begin to Become Infected with Decay Ourselves.

This is the Reality that Play Out Around Us Every Day.

The Future Depends on Whether We Seek to Grow...

Or Succumb to Decay.

Which will You Choose?
