The Little Things
The Unexpected Rewards Of Life And Where They Come From
Written by a human, for humans, always.
You never know what little things will come up through your day...
Or the impact it will have on others.
I take my brother-in-law to therapy a few times a week for speech therapy...
He was diagnosed with non-verbal autism at a very young age, and we’ve been working on different therapies with some incredible successes.
But what happened today did not have to do with my brother.
As I sit in the waiting room area, there are different parents and children that you end up seeing week to week.
One of the kids that I have seen many different times typically keeps to themselves.
But today...
Something different happened.
They walked right over to me...
Sat next to me...
And held onto my arm.
The child has their own little ways of communicating and interacting in the world...
The therapy center works with a variety of individuals through different challenges they have, from movements to communication...
And the child’s mother was right there letting me know a bit about what they were doing as they happened.
Now...
For me, it was an incredible moment to see this little one open up a path of communication to me...
But equally incredible...
Was the look on the mother’s face.
I have seen this mother many times in the office...
Some days I can tell that she has a difficult time with the emotions she faces...
Especially when it is a more difficult day for the child.
So to see her...
Watching her child interact kindly with another...
With a look of relief that, even if the interaction was contrary to “societal norms”, was going well...
And perhaps happy that I was open to having the unexpected interaction...
Was really special for me to see.
There are a lot of people in the world who are struggling.
Sometimes their struggles are their own, such as the little child I interacted with.
Other times, the struggles are through the circumstances that they must face in life, such as the mother.
This is what I know for certain, though...
It is the little moments that can make all the difference.
Participating in the life of another.
Helping others feel at ease in a difficult world.
Providing opportunity and being calm in the face of the unexpected.
Not adding to the struggles that one already faces in life.
It is in these little moments...
Where there can be so much unexpected joy in life.
You only have these kinds of interactions in life...
If you allow yourself to be open to them.
Sadly...
There are so many people who are closed off from the world...
Sometimes for valid reasons where they experienced real challenges...
But in closing ourselves off...
We end up harming ourselves.
As humans...
We are designed to have interactions with others...
To feel different emotions...
To participate in life with others.
It is not always easy...
There are real difficulties, struggles, and challenges that come with it...
But it is also where we have so many opportunities to feel alive.
Many of the most rewarding moments in life...
Come from the little things.
I have had incredible recognition for my work...
But being able to participate and be a part of others’ lives...
That has always felt vastly more rewarding to me.
From my clients...
To my brother-in-law...
To today’s interaction with this young child.
It is those little things which add such flavor and zest to life...
But they only happen when we allow ourselves to be open to them.
