The Highs And Lows Of Racing

My Past Two Spartan Races

I love competition.

It’s something that I have always loved as far back as I can remember.

I was competing in Martial Arts before I could remember.

I was competing in Cross Country at the State Level in High School.

I was competing in Lacrosse NCAA D3 Level at University.

And in 2019, I began to compete in Spartan Obstacle Course Races.

I have loved doing these races over the years.

I have gotten what is called a Trifecta every single year since I started...

Though 2020 was strange because they were “Virtual” races.

So, coming into this year, that was Six Trifectas.

A Trifecta includes, in the same year...

One Sprint - 5k (3.1 Miles) with 20+ Obstacles...

One Super 10k (6.2 Miles) with 25+ Obstacles...

One Beast Half Marathon (21k/13.1 Miles) with 30+ Obstacles, “or” Ultra One 50k (31 Miles) with 60+ Obstacles.

My primary goal has always been to complete the races.

Perhaps improve from year to year.

My strongest races are the shorter courses, but the longer races are my favorite.

This year, I had my plan for my Trifecta.

Austin Sprint, Super, and Trail (No Obstacles).

Dallas Ultra.

Trifecta obtained.

That was the plan, at least.

I went to this year’s Spartan Ultra, a race that I’ve done a few times in the past...

3 Times Before.

I was looking forward to this year’s race.

I got to the event...

Stood on the starting line...

And the race began.

But...

There was something wrong.

I was going through obstacle to obstacle...

And I felt...

Off.

Weak.

I was missing obstacles that I always get...

I was unable to lift as well as I usually do.

Then the headache began.

The headache got worse and worse...

To the point where I was feeling like and confused...

And I had not even passed the halfway point.

I ended up in the dirt with a DNF...

Did Not Finish.

Something that I have “never” had happen before.

Ever...

In my entire life.

It seems that I had been dehydrated...

Went into heat exhaustion...

And was close to something worse.

I was ashamed...

Angry...

Discouraged...

Shaken.

I also had another problem on top of all of that...

By not finishing, I had not earned my Trifecta this year.

If I wanted to earn my Trifecta...

I had one more opportunity.

San Antonio...

Spartan Beast...

One month later.

I had very little time to prepare...

But I wanted to do it.

So, I looked into what went wrong...

Prepared myself...

And Prayed that it would be enough.

Today was the day.

I got to the event...

Stood on the starting line...

And the race began.

It was a completely different experience this time.

I felt great...

Amazing even...

Everything was going as it should...

I was nailing obstacles...

I was going faster than I have ever gone...

And halfway through the race...

I realized that I was on track for a PR...

Personal Record.

I kept going harder and harder...

And I crossed that finish line...

Official Finish: 2 Hours, 51 Minutes, 22 Seconds.

Previous Record: 3 Hours, 15 Minutes, 19 Seconds.

But it was even better than that still...

I not only finished...

I finished Number 3 in my Age Division...

A Podium Finish.

It was not my goal...

But it felt amazing...

Redeeming...

Blessed.

Now, it did not end perfectly.

I did end up having a massive headache after the race...

And tossed my cookies from the exhaustion of pushing myself so hard...

But I did earn my Trifecta.

I did get my first-ever Spartan Podium Finish.

And I am Proud of what I accomplished.

Now, it is time to train hard to make a comeback for next year’s Spartan Ultra.

I do want to thank my Sponsors and Partners for their roles in helping me get here.
