The Counter-Balance Challenge

The Tension Between Quality And Quantity Of Experiences

There is so much to experience in life...

So much we could do...

But there are two roadblocks that exist...

Time...

And Quality.

We can absolutely try to experience as much of life as possible...

But at what price?

If we try to stuff everything into a tiny amount of time...

Then we will not experience any of it with quality.

In the speed we would need to run through everything to experience it all...

None of it would be impactful.

It would be rushed...

Diminished...

Even cheap.

If you sprint through it all...

But remember nothing from it...

Take nothing away from it...

And none of it lasts...

Is it worth it?

But if we take time with the opportunities that we seize...

To make sure that it is quality...

Enjoyed...

Loved...

Then we run into the problem of time.

There are only so much time each day...

Where some have to be dedicated to psychophysiological necessities like eating and sleeping.

In order to gain the type of quality that stays with us...

We need to dedicate enough time to things.

But this leaves us with a conundrum...

Are we doomed to decide between these two?

Either we have quality?

Or quantity?

Well, not necessarily.

You, of course, cannot have the “extremes” of either...

But it is possible to have an incredibly high amount of experiences in life...

While still experiencing it at a high level of quality.

What is required?

Counter-Balancing.

If you ever look at someone who is balancing...

Very closely...

You will notice that there is never a moment when they are “perfectly” balanced.

They are always moving...

Ever so slightly...

Making micro-adjustments so that they do not fall.

These micro-adjustments require the individual to counter-balance.

When they begin to go too far in one direction...

They create a counter-movement or counter-balance...

So that they can move back and continue balancing without falling over.

Navigating between Quality and Experiences is much like this.

We have to figure out what we want to devote our time to...

And then we have to decide which we want to get to a quality point “first”...

Before we counter-balance to attain a quality point in another experience.

The hard part about this...

The challenge...

Is to discover where and when to counter-balance.

If you move too quickly...

You will not get a quality experience.

If you move too slowly...

You will lose out on certain experiences that you may never get back.

I have seen people regret large chunks of their lives on both ends of these.

People who look back on all the things they have done at such a low quality...

That they wonder what the point of it all was...

Feeling that it all amounted to nothing...

Shallow...

Hollow.

On the other end...

I have seen people dedicate so much time to only one quality thing...

That they look back and wonder if this singular thing was really worth it...

And feel that they missed so many things...

Things that would have provided meaning to their lives...

Leaving them feeling that it all amounted to nothing...

Shallow...

Hollow.

The thing about the Counter-Balance Challenge...

Is that you need to learn how to navigate it.

Failing to navigate it...

Leads to different flavors of the same failure in life.

We are meant to experience life...

But those experiences only fuel us...

If they are of a high enough quality to stick with us.

The Counter-Balance Challenge is difficult...

Navigating the tension between quality and quantity of experiences...

But when we navigate it well...

You can design an incredibly fulfilling life.
