The Copycat Deception
Why Mimicking Others Will Fail In "Manifesting" A Life Like Them
The Copycat Deception
Why Mimicking Others Will Fail In “Manifesting” A Life Like Them
Written by a human, for humans, always.
One of my least favorite movements of recent times is the “manifesting” movement.
Fresh marketing for the same garbage people have been selling.
The ideas around manifesting are nothing new...
If you just believe it and think it...
Follow what other manifesters are doing...
You will have it in your life!
Wrong.
People have been saying some version of that for decades...
But the vast majority of people who “do” it...
Fail to get results.
I know, I know...
The people who are into this type of movement will say...
“But I saw them! They did it!”
They could probably list off a few names of people who they follow...
But this is a simple psychological trap known as the Survivorship Bias.
It basically states...
That we overemphasize the winners we see...
But greater underemphasize the significantly larger number of losers we see who did the “exact” same things...
But failed miserably.
If you can only name less than 10 people who have truly “succeeded”...
Assuming they are not lying about their “success” because they are desperate to be perceived as winners in a hopeless game of “Keeping up with the Joneses”...
In a movement with millions of people...
Then you are in a failing game.
But we see this failing game all the time.
So many people deeply believe that if you copy success...
You will have success.
That is just not how it works.
But why?
Why do so many people fall into the Copycat Deception?
The simple answer is that it is a nice story...
Like a fairytale.
We love to hear the rags to riches story...
And believe that we can have that as well.
I’m not saying that rags to riches does not happen - it does...
Just not how most people believe.
This is mixed with the reality...
That most people who have obtained a level of success in their lives...
Do not actually know how they did it.
This is most often the reason why you end up hearing them perpetuate the same types of things...
They “believe”, falsely, that those are what created their success...
But it usually is not true.
How do I know?
Because they almost always fail to replicate that same success later on...
Doing the same things.
What they believe led to their success...
Was never really what led to the success.
But when you do not know what caused your success...
You revert to what you know you did that you believe is supposed to work...
You copy what everyone claims works.
Now...
There are some things that are “humanely” true that are basics...
They do not “create” success, but you also will not be able to get to success without them.
These are things like “working hard” and “believing you can”.
Look...
If you do not work hard...
And you do not really believe in yourself...
You’re clearly not going to succeed or be able to obtain the things you want in life.
In the same thread...
There are many people who are working themselves to the bone...
And believe in themselves with all of their heart and soul...
Who will still fail.
Doing these does not magically “manifest” what you want.
So then the question becomes...
What does lead to success?
Well, let’s look at the reality of life.
Within any category or topic...
There is usually one winner.
They take the majority of the success within that category or topic...
Based on Category Design, around 76% of what is available...
And they usually keep that for as long as that category or topic remains viable.
If the market is big enough, there might be a second-place competitor...
If the market is truly gigantic with extreme demand, there sometimes is a third-place competitor that is not the same level.
Then...
There are a bunch of struggling knock-offs...
And a few individuals who carve off a specific niche within the market that is different enough to allow them to succeed at a level that works for them.
Those who have a niche do not succeed at nearly the same level as whoever owns the greater market...
But it is enough to succeed well above the knock-offs.
Guess what...
Everyone who is copying...
Fall into the knock off category.
Everyone in this category...
Is fighting over what is left over from what the “maybe” top 3 and niche markets leave behind.
So...
How many people do you believe fall into that category?
And what percentage of the market do you believe they are fighting over?
This is why so many people fail.
They are in a game that was destined to lose from the beginning.
This is why I hate movements like the “manifesting” movement...
Which is entirely built on the Copycat Deception.
Siimon says...
Look like a fool...
And everyone does what Simon says...
But only Simon wins at the end of the day as they laugh at all the fools following them.
This type of business model, in my opinion, is sickening...
Often emotionally abusive...
Blaming the losers for just “not doing it right” or “not doing it enough” or “not believing enough”.
All of those are absolutely false.
But...
Simon needs you to believe that it is your own fault...
So that they can maintain their power as Simon...
And as long as others do not figure out the truth...
Simon keeps the power.
The reality is...
You’ll never succeed by being a copycat in the world.
You can learn skills, techniques, and generally followed principles at the beginning...
But at some point...
You need to either join with the winners...
Working with them to build the category or industry further...
Or...
You need to do something that is recognized as truly unique and valuable...
Not by your standards...
But by others’ standards...
Either within a specific niche that has not been taken...
Or within a brand new market or industry that you are creating yourself.
Those are the paths to the highest levels of success for most people.
Where you will never find success...
Is in being a lesser copycat.
