The Challenge Of Morality In A World That Lacks It

How To Move Forward When The Paths All Seem Dark

There was an article I was just reading...

About how the writer was dismayed...

Because they felt like they needed to compromise their morals just to use tech in today’s world.

Not directly, of course...

Indirectly...

By allowing money to go into the hands of individuals whose views and actions they did not support.

I get it.

There are horrible things that people do with their money and power.

In today’s world, it can also be difficult “not” to indirectly support individuals or institutions with which you have moral problems.

I also get...

How we want to support things that we believe in...

And stand against that which we disagree with.

So what are we to do...

When we know there is something that we disagree with...

But we also feel we need to utilize things...

To make a living...

To build our businesses...

For our survival?

It is a really difficult question because I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of us want to only support that which we morally agree with.

However...

That is idealistic thinking...

Which does not work in reality.

Would it be great if we could only support what we agree with...

And only those with whom we agree...

But it is not possible.

Why?

We are all human...

We are all fallible...

None of us, myself included, have perfect understanding or are spotless exemplars of morality...

No matter how much we wish ourselves to be or do our best to live up to...

We all fall flat.

And yes...

Some have fallen further...

And some embrace that which we do not agree with...

But to put their choices on yourself is unfair to yourself...

And you cannot be faulted for needing to survive.

It makes me think about a clip from a pastor that I recently heard...

The pastor was black and found himself within a church that had been founded many years prior by someone who was a known racist...

And he talked about how he wrestled with God over the matter...

But discovered that, although the founder of the physical church was flawed...

The pastor had found God through that church, and was bringing good into the world through that church...

Which he may not have had that church not been founded.

His point was that the world is filled with bad people...

And we may find ourselves in places surrounded by immoral individuals, led by immoral individuals, or even started by immoral individuals...

But what is more important is what we choose to do with whatever is within our power.

Yes...

There are many things outside of our power...

Which we have little to no influence over in changing directly...

But we cannot control those things.

We must focus on what is within our control...

And maintain our morality within that which is in our control...

While releasing ourselves of responsibility for what others choose to do.

If you want to go further and seek to improve the world...

We can...

But we must focus on what is within our control to influence...

While understanding the reality that the rest of the world may not align with us.

Focus on your actions...

And maintain your morality...

Within the best of your abilities.
