The Call To Compromise Your Beliefs
An Interesting Dilemma Of Possibilities
Written by a human, for humans, always.
As we grow in our lives...
We all develop beliefs about what is right and wrong...
What we should be striving for...
And how we want to do things in the world.
At the same time...
We all have things that we have responsibility for in our lives.
Paying bills.
Taking care of our families.
Survival.
So...
What happens when we come face to face with a conflict between these aspects of our life?
Now, there may be some clear examples that exist where there appears to be a very strong path of righteousness or vileness...
But...
Sometimes it is not so clear-cut.
Let me give you an example...
I post my articles and content onto LinkedIn...
It’s not a perfect platform - rife with misinformation, outdated information, and AI slop - so if you’re reading this there, I suggest you follow my work through the newsletter version (link is in the comments for article visibility purposes)...
But it is one of the best platforms to reach executives, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers.
LinkedIn has many other features that are there...
Including job postings.
So, I constantly get job recommendations for various companies.
I’m a curious guy, so I go look at them from time to time to see what exists.
Within that...
I see many job opportunities for various “Leadership Coaching” opportunities.
Here’s the thing...
I have spent a large part of the past 6 years looking at the problems of the Leadership Development industry.
Usually, the challenges people experience are not specific organizations or skills that are being taught...
But rather the models that they are taught on, as well as a number of psychophysiological barriers that are present, which make all the information unusable to the client.
If you do not use the right models...
Or clear the psychophysiological barriers...
It really does not help the client at the end of the day...
Even if, technically, the information is good and valid.
Is it wrong to utilize the typical leadership development models?
No.
Again, the information is not bad information...
It can work...
Just most humans are not in the right place for it to work...
Which is why the leadership development industry completely fails 80% of the time with “limited” success the remainder.
I believe that we should try to meet people where they are...
Providing the help they need when they need it...
In such a way that they can actually utilize it at that time.
But it is not necessarily “wrong” to do it the way we have traditionally seen it done...
Because it can work.
Is it profitable for organizations to do it the way it has traditionally been done?
Absolutely.
Very profitable.
You can see exactly how profitable with how much is offered for these types of positions.
But here is the thing...
Say I were to take one of these jobs that I find...
In every single one that I read...
They all basically say the same thing.
The organization has a method that has worked to make them profitable...
They expect their employees to execute exactly how those methods are designed.
No derivatives.
No adaptations.
No adjustments.
Just execute.
Because that is how those organizations have become extremely profitable.
Now...
If you look at it...
There is a potential conflict of beliefs...
Where there is not a real right or wrong choice.
On the one hand...
You create a customized solution for each client you work with...
Based on where they are and what they specifically need...
With specialized knowledge of psychophysiology being required...
And as a business owner...
You own all of the responsibilities and costs.
On the other hand...
You use a tried and true profitable method...
Based on a repeatable formula...
That is good enough to get enough results to keep clients happy...
Even if the end results are only a fraction of what is possible for the client...
Plus...
As an employee...
You own none of the responsibilities and costs of the organization.
Which path would you choose if this is what was presented to you?
I have seen various similar versions of this play out for many different people in many different ways...
And the reason(s) that people choose one path or the other are usually good reasons.
The need to support a family might drive one person to choose the job route...
Even if they know there are better paths.
Others are willing to take the risks to build something more impactful...
Even if they know that it will be a tremendously difficult path...
The reward of designing something better and helping clients reach significantly better success is completely worth it to them.
There are many other reasons that people have for moving in one direction or another.
It is a really interesting dilemma that many people face...
Where we are called to compromise the beliefs we have.
How people decide which of the beliefs they have...
Especially when they are at odds with each other.
It is also fascinating to see...
How people make this decision when the stakes are higher...
Or how decisions begin to cascade where the morals become more and more questionable.
When does one choose one way or the other?
Where does the line get drawn?
Will that line move over time?
How far?
Is there a point where you go too far to turn around?
Can there be redemption?
Or...
Is it a jump into the darkness with no return?
Every single one of us will be called to compromise on our beliefs...
And sometimes it is not clear whether one should choose one path or another.
It becomes a dilemma of possibilities...
Where different paths drive us toward different futures.
It is worth considering what your beliefs are...
So when the time comes...
And you are called to compromise one of them...
You know how you want to proceed.
