The Biggest Danger I See With AI

It Is Not An AI Takeover

There are a lot of theories about how AI will destroy us.

Hostile takeovers...

Taking over the technology of different governments...

Stealing all of our net worth creating financial collapse.

Now, I’m not saying that I necessarily believe these will happen...

They most likely will not.

But that does not mean that there are not real risks to the use of AI...

Especially if we are not careful.

What is the biggest danger that I see with AI?

Overreliance.

Specifically...

Expecting AI to do certain tasks in life...

Without understanding how to do those tasks “without” AI.

Let me give you an example outside of AI.

We have this wonderful technology called a calculator.

You have probably used it.

But here is the thing...

We still teach children how to do math “without” a calculator.

Why?

So we do not develop overreliance.

Because...

If you do not understand how to do the math...

And you suddenly find yourself without a calculator...

Then you are helpless.

You have become dependent on the calculator.

Your ability to do math is slave to a calculator.

Now, that is a specific example...

But which we can apply to AI...

Especially as, at least theoretically, AI technology becomes capable of doing more in our lives.

(Some people have doubts if we have reached the limits of today’s AI technology, but that is a different topic).

See...

Assuming AI is capable of doing more...

This means that there will be more that we do not need to do ourselves.

This is not inherently bad...

But it can become terrible.

What happens if we allow AI technology to control our food supplies...

But we do not know how the food is made?

Or where it is coming from?

What happens if we allow AI technology to do our work for us...

And we no longer know how to do it without AI?

What happens if we allow AI technology to interact with others for us...

And we no longer know how to have healthy conversations?

What happens if we allow AI technology to think for us...

And we fail to understand how it comes to its conclusions?

If these come to pass...

What does that mean for us?

What would the consequences be?

What is more terrifying about this...

Is that we are already seeing it happen.

When students we tested for IQ...

Those who allowed AI to think for them...

Lost IQ.

With this...

We also know that when people stop utilizing a skill....

They become rusty.

They forget certain aspects.

In some cases...

They forget entirely how to do it.

If we do not recall how to do certain things in life...

It can create many problems and situations where we can become abused...

Or worse.

For instance...

If we become fully dependent on AI...

What is to stop the company or government that owns the AI to increase prices dramatically?

Or require us to do certain things, which we could consider unethical, in order to get what we need?

Or what if we take a different direction....

What happens if the AI has a problem and begins to malfunction...

Such as with AI hallucinations that we see today?

Or the AI missing a step in logic?

What do we do when we do not know how it functions but we realize it is not working correctly?

Or...

What if we do not realize it is not working correctly at all?

This is a far greater danger than any other danger that I have heard.

The danger of dependence.

Does this mean that we cannot use AI?

Are we doomed to become dependent on AI if we use it?

Of course not.

We use calculators today, right?

Just because you use a technology does not automatically mean you are dependent on it.

But…

There are some things you have to pay attention to in order to make sure that you do not become dependent.
