The Accelerating Gap
Why The Best Tend To Stay At The Top Unchallenged... And What Can Cause The Top To Fall
Written by a human, for humans, always.
Have you ever noticed...
That those who become the best at something...
Tend to remain the best?
Have you ever wondered...
Why that is?
It is actually not very difficult to understand.
It has to do with the Accelerating Gap.
See...
To become the best at something...
You need to develop certain skills.
Every industry has different sets of skills that will be required...
But to become the best...
You need to develop those skills to an incredibly high level.
It requires more than talent...
Or sheer will...
It requires constant cultivation to reach those heights.
Here is where it begins to become interesting...
The more often you develop those skills...
The more consistent you become...
The more dedicated you are...
What you begin to experience is exponential results within those skills.
The compound effect.
Think of it like this...
Let’s say that you work on something, striving to become 1% better every day.
Seems like nothing, especially at the beginning.
1% seems like nothing.
You started at 1.00 and got to 1.01 by the end of day 1.
But by the end of day 2?
You are at 1.0201...
Or 2.01% better.
Do you see what happened?
It is “greater” than 1%...
Because the compounding has begun.
But it still “feels” small...
Until you begin to become more consistent.
After 30 days...
You’re at 1.34785 (rounded)...
Up 34.785%.
What about after 1 year?
You’re at 37.7834 (rounded)...
Up 3,678.34% from where you began.
After 2 years?
You’re at 1,427.5879 (rounded)...
Up 142,658.79% from where you began.
Now do you see what is happening?
Consistent compounding...
Begins to create an Acceleration Gap...
Which is difficult...
If not impossible...
For others to overcome.
Even when someone wants to challenge those at the top...
It is difficult when the compounding continues to work in favor of the one at the top.
Here is the thing...
How many people do you know...
Who has “consistently” cultivated themselves for 2 years or longer?
“Truly” consistently?
It is very rare.
Few people have the deep dedication to what they do to make themselves the best at something...
And are willing to stay consistent enough to get there.
Especially when...
The best are already so far ahead.
Most people feel it is hopeless to even attempt to close that gap.
So they do not.
But it is not like those at the top...
Can stay there forever...
Right?
Well...
It depends on a few factors.
One factor is the question of “how far” ahead they got.
Some individuals have simply taken an incredible amount of time to reach gigantic heights within certain industries...
Difficult for anyone to challenge.
Some individuals do get so far ahead...
That their successes can last even after their death.
It may be possible to reach those heights...
If you’re willing to put in the effort to challenge.
There are other factors that can be at play as well.
For instance...
There is a point where people get so far ahead...
With so few challenges to their lead...
That they lose interest.
Especially for individuals who enjoy being challenged...
When they have no serious challengers...
It can become completely demotivating.
This is also where the “lonely at the top” idea comes from.
When someone really pushes the boundaries of an industry...
There are fewer and fewer people who really understand them.
They have wired themselves to reach those heights...
In ways most people will never attempt.
It can be lonely.
With this...
Once one gets to the top...
And they are so far ahead...
It can become incredibly easy to begin to take it easy.
To take off the foot from the accelerator.
It is not like others will catch up anytime soon.
That is true...
But it is also a trap.
Why?
Life is always in states of change.
There is growth...
And decay.
One is never “set” in a spot forever.
So when one begins to stop being as consistent...
They begin to lose a percentage. It may seem small at first...
But this, too, can compound over time.
In some cases, they keep themselves relatively stable...
Growing and decaying at nearly even rates.
But...
That is all that is needed for someone else to begin to make a real challenge.
Then we can look at the factor of relevance.
If someone dedicates themselves to becoming the best at something...
But that thing begins to become irrelevant...
There are two choices.
Either hold onto the sinking ship for as long as you are able...
Or move into what is becoming relevant.
It is possible to make effective transitions...
But it is not always easy...
And sometimes it requires one to give up everything they had before.
For some...
Those are things they are not willing to do.
They do not want to dedicate the time or effort required to what comes next...
Or they do not want to give up everything they gained.
It can be difficult to do so...
But the cost...
Is that as something begins to fade into irrelevance...
So do the former bests.
What else can be at play?
Fear.
See...
For many who become the best...
It comes with many other things alongside it.
If they are challenged...
It can create fear in them.
Here is the problem with that...
Fear puts us into a psychophysiological state...
Where we are vastly more likely to make mistakes.
If someone is considered the best...
But then they begin to consistently make mistakes...
Others begin to believe they lost their touch...
Which causes the best to lose trust...
Leading to their ultimate demise.
Once you lose trust...
It is incredibly difficult to get it back.
There is one other factor that can be at play...
They simply stop.
For whatever reasons they may be.
Being tired.
Wanting to retire.
Wanting to move into something different in their lives.
Bodily decay.
Death.
People stop for all sorts of reasons.
But when you begin to look at all of this together...
We begin to see why the best tend to stay at the top unchallenged.
When they have dedicated themselves...
They create an Accelerating Gap between them and all others.
The vaster the chasm...
The less likely others are to challenge.
Then...
Unless there are outside factors...
Or the best continue to stay dedicated at levels that allow them to stay in the game...
It is nearly impossible to overcome them.
But here is what you need to understand...
The only way to become one of the best...
At anything...
Is to dedicate yourself at that level...
Even with the knowledge...
That it could be a hopeless endeavor.
That is an uncomfortable truth that the vast majority of people do not want to accept.
There are no guarantees.
No promises.
You are not owed anything.
To believe any of these is the pit of privilege and pride...
Which is why...
So few...
Will ever become the best.
