Productivity Pretense
How Most People Self-Sabotage Themselves Into Getting Nothing Done
Productivity Pretense
How Most People Self-Sabotage Themselves Into Getting Nothing Done
Written by a human, for humans, always.
So...
How is progress going?
You know...
That one big thing that you are working toward?
Now, assuming you are doing some work toward it...
The question becomes...
Are you actually being productive?
Or are you in a productivity pretense?
See...
There are many, many people...
That are doing “something” toward the goals that they have...
But what are the actual results of that?
Many people are planning...
Thinking...
Compiling...
Always saying that they are working...
But everything they are doing...
Never creates forward movement.
If you are in this situation right now, do not feel too bad.
I have been there too.
We, as humans, are really good at self-sabotaging ourselves...
Convincing ourselves consciously that we are making progress...
While simultaneously...
We are subconsciously doing everything to avoid making true progress.
I have built systems and systems within my business...
That never got implemented.
Something did not work.
So I went back to planning.
A new tool was discovered.
So I had to figure out how to use it.
I did not feel confident enough in something.
So I went looking to become better educated in those things.
I was doing work...
Looking productive...
While never actually being productive.
It was a productivity pretense.
This is where you have to begin to learn what productivity truly is.
Forward progress with recognized results that move the bottom line.
This is how to really discover whether it is a productivity pretense or not...
What happens to the bottom line?
If you are running a business...
Are you meeting revenue goals?
If you are leading a team...
How consistently are they hitting their deliverables?
Are those deliverables truly contributing to the overall bottom line?
How are you sure?
What allows others to recognize that there is real progress?
Does that progress actually happen?
Let me give you a real-life example from an organization that I worked in early in my career.
There was a salesperson who believed they were being incredibly productive...
Making large 6-figure contracts with clients.
But was the salesperson making real progress?
We ended up discovering...
No.
They were getting contracts signed...
The organization was delivering services...
But payments were never getting received...
Because the salesperson had created contracts with net 180 terms (meaning the client did not have to pay “anything” for 6 months)...
Then, before the 180 days were up...
The salesperson was getting another contract signed...
Without ever verifying if the client had paid anything...
Then in the contract...
Allowing the client to be forgiven of all “previously unpaid bills”.
The result...
Sales were looking great and positive...
But money was not coming in...
And the client was not legally obligated to pay either.
The bottom line was not being obtained...
So there was no real productivity at the end of the day...
Despite all the work and effort that many people within the organization put into everything.
We luckily got it all figured out...
Turned a terrible situation into a win...
But this is not always true in many organizations.
This is why it is so important to ensure that all of your efforts are obtaining real productivity...
Instead of living in a productivity pretense.
So many people put a lot of time, effort, and resources...
Into a productivity pretense.
But unless there are real results that move the bottom line...
All of that time, effort, and resources are wasted...
Even if it feels or looks like productivity is happening.
Do not fall into...
A productivity pretense.
