The Challenging Psychology Most Struggle With And How To Move Past It Toward Your Goals
Written by a human, for humans, always.
How far do you plan to go?
How long will you continue on your journey?
If you ask anyone this...
They will give you the same sorts of answers.
All the way.
Until I am successful.
I’ll get to the goal.
All of these answers I understand.
We like to be positive.
We want to believe that we have what it takes to reach the goals that we have.
We think that we will be the exception.
Here is a question that most people do not ask themselves...
Will you do it praiseless?
For how long?
See...
When most people get a picture of what they imagine their success will look like...
They have a vision that they will receive praise along the way.
But the reality is...
Most do not.
They receive no praise for the work they do...
Even if it is spectacular.
I know it from experience.
I have written over 1,250 articles over the past 3.5 years.
I did not receive any praise during my first few hundred articles.
None.
But it goes further than this.
Once you are recognized and receive some praise...
You may still not receive praise for everything you do.
Many of the most brilliant articles that I have written...
What laid the fundamental groundwork that has completely changed clients’ businesses...
Have been met with crickets.
How long can you go praiseless?
Here is what you need to begin to learn to accept if your goal is to last the long term...
Never expect praise.
In fact...
Expect your work to go unpraised...
Not because it is not worthy of being praised...
Because hopefully you believe in yourself, your work, and your capabilities enough to believe it is worthy of praise...
But because if your ability to move toward your goals is dependent on receiving praise...
You will have difficulty getting to your goals.
From a psychological perspective...
If you expect to be praised...
And evaluate your work based on whether it is praised or not...
Or at what level of praise you receive...
When you fail to receive praise, you will judge your efforts as valueless.
When this happens...
Our identity and worth become threatened...
And the result for the vast majority of people...
Is that they turn away from that which threatens them.
This usually plays at a subconscious level, though, which makes it all the more dangerous for people...
Because they will distract themselves...
They will subtly self-sabotage themselves...
Until they completely stop making progress altogether.
Yet there is a different way.
Expect no praise.
When you do this well...
You begin to value your work based on the true value of the work.
When you receive nothing...
You are not threatened because you expected nothing.
When praise does come...
Because the value was already there...
Then you become grateful for the praise...
That often creates a virtuous cycle that leads to further praise.
But even if further praise does not come...
It does not stop you...
Because the value of you and your work is not determined by whether you receive praise or not.
There is an extreme power that exists in having a fundamental understanding that your value is not determined by others...
A power that most people lack in their lives.
When you are not desperate for praise...
You discover what you are capable of.
That...
Is something that often gets noticed.
There is a confidence that is gained with that kind of self-determined power...
One which others respect...
Others seek...
That often is needed in the world.
Praise often comes with this...
But it is difficult to make it far enough to earn the praise if you expect praise along the way.
The expectation of praise is what becomes the barrier to receiving praise.
Go forth praiseless.
