Michelangelo's David And The Moment Of Absolute Potential

Thoughts On One Of Michelangelo's Masterpieces On His 550th Birthday

Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists of all time.

His artwork has inspired people for generations.

I've been inspired by his work as well.

I saw that today was Michelangelo's 550th Birthday, so I felt it would be great to talk about one of his pieces of art that has Impacted Me the Most.

The Statue of David.

Now, if you do not know the Story of David, allow me to give you a quick breakdown of this Biblical Story.

The Challenge Of Goliath

Two Armies Faced Each Other.

One, the Army of Israel, the Chosen of The Lord God.

The Other, the Army of Philistine, one of the Great Enemies of Israel at this time.

Warriors faced each other on both sides, but one Stood Above the Rest.

Goliath.

A Giant of a Man.

Based on the Estimates of Measurements Used from that time period...

He stood between 9 and 11 Feet Tall.

Truly Massive.

Taller than the Syrian Brown Bears that lived in those Regions.

Goliath Stood at the front of the Philistine Army and Challenged any Man to Single Combat.

If "Any" Man could Kill Him?

Then the Philistine Army would become the Slaves of Israel.

If Goliath Killed Them?

Then the Army of Israel would become their Slaves.

For 40 Days, These Two Armies Faced Each Other.

For 40 Days, Goliath made this Challenge.

For 40 Days, No Man in Israel was Brave Enough to Accept the Challenge.

That was, until a Young Boy was sent to give his Brothers some food and supplies.

This Young Boy was David.

David Answers The Challenge

Estimated to be around 16 Years Old.

Nothing More than a Shepherd.

When David arrived, he heard the Challenge of Goliath.

David saw that No Other Man was brave enough to face Goliath.

When this young boy witnessed this, he was Appalled.

How could these men, supposedly Warriors of God, all act so Cowardly?

Who was this "Goliath" compared to the Support of God?

Young David made a Decision in that Moment.

He Would Face Goliath.

With the King of Israel's Consent, David went to Face Goliath.

Now, this Massive Monster of a Man was Dressed for War from Head to Toe.

But David faced Goliath with Nothing but some Smooth Stones and a Sling.

David Faces Goliath

Goliath mocked the Army of Israel for sending a Tiny Shepherd Boy to Fight this Battle.

Goliath further mocked David, promising a Disrespectful Death.

But David was Undeterred.

He Poised Himself.

Took his Sling with a Stone...

Launched the Stone...

With One Perfect Hit in the Middle of his Head...

Goliath Collapsed...

Dead.

David had Won.

The Philistine Army Ran in Fear, and the Army of Israel Triumphed.

The Artistic Portrayal Of David

When most artists chose to depict David, they portrayed the Moment after David's Victory.

However, Michelangelo decided to Portray a Different Moment that No One had Ever Portrayed Before...

Michelangelo chose to Show David at the Moment "Right" before the Fateful Battle.

The Moment of David's Highest Anticipation.

Concentrating on His Ultimate Goal.

When you look at the Face of the Statue of David, you can See It...

The Determination.

The Focus.

The Clarity.

There is a Recognition in the Eyes of David.

There was not a Scientific Name for this Moment at the time that we are aware of...

But Today, we would Call this a "Very" Specific Point of The Flow Cycle...

It is the Moment of "Release".

The Flow State Of David

Now, if you do not know, Flow is where we Perform at Our Current Potential.

When in Flow, we become Unstoppable.

Smooth.

Perfect.

This is the Psychophysiological State that David would have "Had" to have Attained to so Masterfully Strike his Opponent.

The rest of the Army of Israel was Unable to Reach this State.

Why?

Fear.

When we are Afraid, we become Blocked from Flow.

But for David, he had Faith that The Lord would Guide his Hand.

Now, whether You Personally Believe that happened or not matters little, because "David" was Convinced of His Faith.

What did this Allow David to Do?

The Call to Battle is a Stressor, and in All Stressors there is a "Struggle", which is the First Phase of the Flow Cycle.

However, if we are in tune with our Psychophysiology, we can "Adjust" the Level of Struggle to a Pinpoint Spot.

That Spot is the Moment of "Release".

After the Release, Flow comes Naturally.

David’s True Moment Of Victory

David had Won as Soon as the "Release" Stage Happened.

What Michelangelo shows in the Statue of David is the "True" Moment of Victory.

The Victory of Finding Flow despite the Overwhelming Challenge.

When we Find Flow, the Monstrous Challenges we Face, the "Goliath" that Exists in Our Lives, becomes Conquerable.

We become...

Unrestrained.

Unshackled...

Free.

Now, the Statue of David is actually Two Tales of Flow States.

I have told you the Story of David’s Flow State, which is Captured in the Statue.

However, this Masterpiece is also a Triumph of…

Michelangelo’s Flow States.

On top of this, Michelangelo Demonstrated his Sageship throughout the Design of the Statue of David.
