Losing The Chance To Experience Life
A Vacation Thought About How We Live
Written by a human, for humans, always.
How many people...
Go through their entire lives...
And never really live?
I often wonder this question.
The world is so full of wonders and things to do...
If you just go and try.
I’m currently on vacation, and I went out on a boat with members of my family.
One of the activities was to go snorkeling around a little protected island.
It was a really fascinating area...
With all sorts of fish and some coral reef in the area.
Absolutely beautiful.
But here’s the thing...
Amidst everyone that I was with...
I was the only one who saw some of the features of the area.
The primary reason...
Was the fear that others had.
Everyone got into the water...
They did a bit of snorkeling around the boat.
A few members of my family made it to a shallower area closer to the boat.
My spouse, even with her fear of the ocean, made it about 75% of the way to where I was.
But I was the only person who got far enough see the coral in the area and the fish that were all in that area.
Everyone had fun...
But I’m the only one who really knows what was out there.
I often wonder...
How much more is there to experience in life that people miss...
If ony they had gone a little bit further...
What more would they enjoy in this life?
So many people are held back from being experiencing the fullness that life has to offer...
By fear...
By health...
By failing to even try.
So many people lose the chance to experience life.
It usually is not a quick process.
It is one small decision...
Followed by another...
Until a habit begins to form where they stop themselves far too early.
One day goes by...
Then a week...
Months turn into years...
Then they find themselves on their deathbeds wondering where time went...
Wondering why they did not live life more.
It can become so easy to shut ourselves off to the possibilities...
To make choices that feel momentarily good that destroy our future...
To life in the comfort of our well-worn shallow lives.
But...
The time does not go backward...
Most people become stuck in their fears and their stresses...
Often putting themselves into mental loops that circle around them like predators ready to destroy their futures.
Most people do not train themselves to become mental warriors, ready to face off against their nightmare predators.
Instead...
They become prey to their worries...
Losing the chance to experience life.
Now...
There is hope.
We can choose to face our fears, and slowly begin to experience more and more of life.
My spouse, as afraid as she was, really faced an incredible fear of hers with courage.
She took a step forward...
And began to experience more of what life had to offer.
With more time, perhaps she will be alongside me the next time we attempt a feat like this.
But sadly most people do not choose to take steps like that in their lives.
Instead of taking a step forward...
They begin to submit to fear...
As if they believed that cowering to predators causes them not to strike.
That is just not how life works.
To overcome the predators, you must stand tall and cause them to question whether they want to fight...
And be ready for whatever may come.
The question we must ask ourselves...
Is whether we want to lose the chance to experience life...
Or...
If we are willing to stand tall...
And move forward with courage...
Gaining the opportunity to experience everything that life has to offer.
