Jesus And Cultivating Future Leaders And Sages

Why Leadership Development Programs Consistently Fail & A Biblical Solution

A number of years ago, I had a feeling that something was wrong in the world of Leadership Development.

I had been having a good start to my career...

But I had noticed something.

Although people I worked with were improving...

I felt deep down that something was missing.

It really came together for me when I discovered a stat that changed my career...

80% of leadership development programs “completely” fail...

With “limited” success the remainder of the time.

What this meant...

Was that leadership development consistently fails.

That was when I began to look for why this was happening...

And how we could actually develop leaders...

Though, over time, I came to the conclusion that “leadership” was not enough...

And that was the birth of Sageship.

Now, today, I was listening to a part of the history of the early Christian Church.

If you are not a Christian, do not worry about it.

I have no desire to convert you.

This will still have a valuable lesson for you, even if you do not believe the story itself.

So, let’s give a very quick overview of this specific piece of the story...

And then I will explain what it has to do with leadership development in today’s world.

Jesus had a group of individuals who followed him around from place to place...

The Apostles, along with other dedicated followers.

During the life of Jesus...

These followers would ask questions about what was going to happen.

Jesus would teach many lessons and foreshadow to his followers what was about to happen...

How the Kingdom of God was to come to pass...

And nearly every time...

The followers thought they understood...

But they did not.

Not really.

Because when what Jesus told them would happen came to be...

His death on the cross...

His followers were all confused, and they failed to understand why Jesus allowed it to happen.

They did not understand what Jesus had taught them.

Luckily for them...

This was a part of the plan, and Jesus, being innocent of sin, was resurrected.

He came back to his followers...

Found them...

And for 40 days...

Jesus continued to teach them about the Kingdom of God and why his death and resurrection were necessary for humanity’s salvation...

And how they were to become leaders of the new Church and Kingdom.

Only after those 40 Days did Jesus return to heaven to be seated at the right hand of the Father.

Yet...

Jesus continued to teach his followers through the Holy Spirit that traveled with them across the globe...

Until Christianity became the most widespread, multi-cultural, and largest religion in the world.

So, what does this have to do with leadership development today?

There is a process that Jesus followed...

Which does not exist in leadership development.

How does leadership development typically work?

Typically...

There is a stage, workshop, or classroom setting.

In that setting...

You are taught leadership skills and techniques.

All of them are theoretical.

Then...

That is it.

People go back to their organizations...

And they fail to utilize what they learned.

They thought they understood the theory...

But failed to understand and apply it when it became important.

They are exactly like the followers of Jesus right after His death.

The followers all “thought” they understood...

But when reality happened...

They were all lost and failed to really grasp what they had been taught.

So, what did Jesus have to do?

Come back.

Help them understand the lessons, now with the experience of reality.

This is something that does not usually happen in leadership development.

There is no follow-up.

No one comes back.

The lessons become lost when people fail to connect theory and reality.

It is something that takes time...

But which people are not given.

Jesus spent 40 days with his followers “after” the events of His death.

Most people in leadership development never have anyone who comes back to help them.

They are just expected to “know”...

But that is not how reality works...

And so leadership development consistently fails.

Lessons are taught...

They are not applied to reality...

Or in the few cases where lessons connect to reality...

They realize they misunderstood the lessons, and they do not apply them well in reality...

And no one is there to help afterward.

The only way for the “spirit” of the lessons to continue to guide people after no one is there...

Is for people to begin to connect the theory of the lessons to real events that they experience in their lives...

And then understand “how” it works in those real events...

Which only happens when someone takes the time to continue to guide them after the experiences.

When I began to develop this idea in my own work...

I called this leadership and sageship cultivation.

Just like someone who is tending a garden...

It requires someone to come back to help the plants continue to grow.

If there is no cultivation...

The plants might overgrow in the wrong places...

Or die...

Becoming snuffed out by weeds.

Cultivation is a practice where theory has to become applied to real experiences, and then cultivated further...

Until someone understands the lessons well enough that the “spirit” of the lesson continues to be carried with them everywhere they go.

This is how Jesus, according to the Bible, helped his followers really understand what many people consider to be some of the most difficult lessons in history to understand.

Now, perhaps we do not have to teach people the importance of the meaning of death and resurrection in the face of sin...

But we do need to become better at cultivating leaders and sages in our world.

There has been a dire need for leaders and sages...

For decades...

And they are few and far between.

To develop the future...

We really need to begin to pay attention to how our current systems are failing us...

And develop systems that actually work...

Not theoretically...

But in reality.
