How Understanding Business Helped Me Navigate The Health World

Deciphering Potential Solutions From Hustle Marketing

Life is a strange thing.

I had never intended to dive deeply into the world of health after college.

I was set on moving into accounting...

Before the corporate incident that showed me the leadership problems in today’s world...

Which then set me on the path to entrepreneurship.

It was in entrepreneurship where I had to learn how to actually run a business...

Learn the ins and outs...

How to market yourself...

How to get clients...

Understanding different business models and how they may or may not be feasible...

I have even learned methods of making yourself appear as more of an authority than you really are.

One of my favorite quotes around this, which is a sentiment I no longer really believe in...

“A fifth grader is a god to a third grader.”

The idea is that if you just “appear” to be further on the path...

You can utilize that to help you sell things.

The problem with this, however...

Is that not everyone uses these ideas, tools, and models to benefit others.

Often...

These are used to benefit the users of these techniques at the “expense” of clients or customers...

Hence, why I do not believe in utilizing them anymore.

But when I discovered that at the center of many of our business problems were psychophysiological problems...

I began to dedicate myself to understanding how these problems come about...

And how to resolve them.

But the health world is a total mess.

Filled with junk products...

Untested theories...

Even products that directly cause bodily harm...

All cleverly utilizing hustle marketing techniques to convince people to purchase them...

All to the detriment of those who end up purchasing them.

The good news for me...

Is that I have learned a lot of how these types of methodologies are utilized...

And have the tools that allow me to decipher potential solutions that are based in legitimate science...

Even when the western medical establishment attempts to demonize them because of what these solutions do to their profit margins...

As well as the tools to see when people are hustle marketing the latest snake oil...

Or even when well intentioned individuals have been misled in what they are providing.

All of these exist in the world of health.

For instance...

There is a certain peddler of books and smoothies who I will not name...

Where I can see through their lies based on how their business model works.

They promote themselves as a spiritual individual that has been “given” these solutions...

And sells them, as they claim, primarily through books.

Here’s the problem with that...

I’ve looked into the traditional book selling industry...

The number of books he would have to be selling to make that their “primary” income...

Doesn’t work out in the math.

The business model does not make sense for living a decent life in today’s world.

What that tells me...

Is their primary profit is not the books they sell.

So what is?

Well, if you read their books (which I do not recommend because they are filled with conspiracy theory, half-truths, and complete nonsense)...

They have hundreds of different smoothies...

All sorts of reasons of why they work...

Even “troubleshooting” for why they may not work, which blame you every time...

While demonizing every other “alternative” that exists...

Even so far as saying that if it does not work, that your spirit is the problem...

Aka, a form of spiritual abuse...

And only promoting “very” specific products that you “must” use to make these work...

And inviting you to watch videos online.

Therein lies the real model of business and how this individual makes money.

They need you to buy specific supplements...

Which they “claim” not to have any business relationship with...

On a site that, not surprisingly, does not have any information about ownership nor quality of these products...

Meaning either the individual “is” the owner and is lying about it “or” is being paid handsomely, either through sponsorship or affiliation, to sell these specific products...

While also needing you to watch as many videos (or listening to podcasts) as possible to gain income from watching them.

The reason he needs to demonize every other solution that exists...

Is because he knows that if you pursue those other options, that you will get better results...

And no, that is not just me saying it, but entire communities that have developed that discuss this occurring and warning people about these tactics used by this individual.

The reason they use the position of being a “spiritual” person is because it is very easy to manipulate people who are very spiritual when they believe that you are a spiritual authority.

The more videos you watch...

The more income they generate.

The more products you purchase...

The more income they generate.

The more you believe that you are the problem...

The more you watch videos and buy the products.

The more you fear everything else...

The more trapped you become.

It is a truly insidious business model they utilize...

But you might not be able to really “see” this unless you understand how the “presented” business model fails to make sense in reality.

However...

We could go to other types of hustle marketing as well...

One that I see with so many supplements, health-tech products, and “tests” today.

What you will find on nearly every website are references to “research” with a summary of how their product or service provides benefits based on that research.

But...

Does it really?

See, may hustle marketers bank on the fact that you will not actually look at any of the research presented...

And will “take their word” for whatever they want you to believe.

I have seen people attempt to use research...

That lied about claims entirely...

Failed to disclose harmful side-effects...

Misconstrued data purposefully to get a better sounding result...

Made theoretical claims that had no real basis in the research...

Studies that were done with completely different modalities...

Studies that never utilized the product or service that are supposedly “proven”...

And more.

But because so many people never actually read the research...

Or look at what the research actually reveals...

They fall prey to things like Authority Bias, The Woozle Effect, Cherry Picking, and Pseudointellectualism to name a few.

We can also look at different influencers...

And pay attention to the specific things they are saying.

Why?

If you pay close attention...

You will often hear people use either the “exact” same phrase...

Or “very” similar phrasing.

What this frequently reveals is what is known as the Frequency Bias...

Where we begin to “believe” things because we have “heard” those things so many times...

Even if the information is completely true.

When you understand this...

You can begin to see things like...

Where is the information being derived from?

Is the information based on any facts, or is it a continual parroting that occurs in specific circles?

What you often see happen...

Is people saying things they have heard...

Copying things that those people had heard...

Which ends up coming back to forms of pseudoscience and misleading research...

Based on theories that never worked out in reality.

But if you are not aware of how this hustle marketing tactic is frequently used...

You can become blinded into believing things that are not true.

I see this happen with so many professionals...

Even doctors with decades of practice under their belt...

Falling prey to these types of business tactics designed to get them to sell things that end up harming their patients...

Even though they truly believe in them and intend well in the world.

If you want to navigate the world of health...

Understanding business provides a very insightful view of how things are sold to you...

And whether you should really trust them or not.
