How To Know If You Deeply Understand Something
The Four Levels Of Knowledge On Any Topic
I have Met a Lot of Smart and Intelligent People over the Years.
However, many of them become Trapped within their Careers.
They Know a Lot...
But are Blocked from Progressing to New Levels.
Often, there is a Very Simple Reason that it Occurs.
They Know their Area of Expertise...
But Not Deeply.
Now, I Do Not mean this in a Belittling Way.
Again, they are "Absolutely" Intelligent and Deeply Masterful of their Expertise.
The Challenge, however, is that there are Deeper Levels of Knowledge that they are Often Not Aware of...
Which Prevents them from Moving Upward.
They are Often at the First Level of Knowledge of their Subject...
Mastery.
This is where You Know the Answers to Questions Yourself on the Topic...
But the Problem?
We Live within an Interdependent Society.
If You Cannot, or Deeply Struggle to, Successfully Communicate Your Knowledge...
Then You Will Struggle to Move Forward in Society.
Sometimes these Individuals are Known as the "Technicians"...
They Know How to Solve the Problems...
Others Go to Them to Solve the Problems...
But they are Always Overlooked for Promotions or Struggle to Be Seen Over Other Peers...
Even Peers who are Clearly Less Knowledgable.
The Challenge is that Others "Know" that You "Know" Something...
But because You Cannot Articulate Well Enough, "They" Struggle to Explain or Understand "Exactly" What You Do or Do Not Know...
Which, when Most People are Faced with Confusion...
They Pass Over You.
It May Seem Unfair, but Interdependence is a Two-Way Street, and it Must be Understood Clearly in Both Directions.
The Second Level of Knowledge is Being Able to Help Other Knowledgeable Individuals Find the Right Questions.
Knowledge is Only Useful if it can be Applied...
But to Apply it Correctly, You Must Also Ask the Right Questions.
When "We" are Knowledgeable about Something, We Often "Know" How to "Think" about Things Ourselves...
But it can be a Deeply Subconscious Knowing, which then Makes it Difficult to "Discuss" with Others.
They Ask You "How" You Knew to Do That...
But You Cannot Really Answer because it is "Stuck" Inside of You.
In Order to Get to the Next Level of Knowledge...
You Must Understand the "Processes" to Find the Right Answers...
Which Means You Must Know the Right Questions, Consciously, to Ask to Arrive at the Right Place.
The Challenge Here, of Course, is then You Must "Apply" This within Interdependence, and Help "Others" Understand the Right Questions to be Asking.
If You can Guide Others to Ask the Right Questions, then You've Attained the Second Level of Knowledge.
The Third Level of Knowledge Requires You to Go "Beyond" Your Industry, however.
This is the Beginning of Sageship.
It is about Asking Different Questions and Seeking New Answers that No One has Found Before.
This is Often Extremely Difficult because it May Require "Unlearning" what You've been Taught...
Or Completely Rejecting what Others Assume is True.
It also Requires You to Stand Firmly in what You Find, and Prove What You Begin to Discover.
It can be Very Difficult at this Stage because You May be Working with Ideas that are Beyond what Others are Considering...
And Answers Do Not Yet Exist.
So, You are Often Faced with Extreme Uncertainty.
But the Final Level of Knowledge is Perhaps the Most Important...
Can You Explain it to Others Who Have No Mastery of the Subject.
I was Reminded of this in Two Different Ways today.
The first was during a wonderful conversation I was having with a friend.
We were Catching Up after a Few Years, and we were Discussing different Tools and Ideas around Psychophysiology.
When we Finished Talking, they told me how it was Powerful that I could Explain all of these Ideas Quickly and with Ease in Simple Terms, they Understood...
Especially since they had been working with Companies that were "Selling" these Tools and Services, and "They" Couldn't Explain the Concepts Clearly.
This is the Difference between Individuals at the Second or Third Level, and Someone at the Fourth Level.
Clarity.
I was Reminded of this a Second Time Today as I was listening to a Podcast Interview.
There was an Extremely Intelligent Guest on the Show who was Discussing their Theories around Viruses and Bacterial Infections.
I have been Studying Scientific Research and some of these Topics Recently, as had the Host of the Show...
So I Understood a Decent Amount of what the Guest was Speaking About.
The Problem?
The Host would Ask Questions, but the Guest was Unable to Clearly Answer the Questions.
I Could Tell that the Guest Was Extremely Intelligent and Passionate about their Beliefs...
But the Lack of Clarity made it Difficult to Follow Fully...
For both the Host and Myself...
Both who have a Good Grasp of the Topic Overall.
Admittedly, the Host's Grasp was Better than Mine, as I would Consider Myself an Intermediate Student of the Topics Currently.
But this Points to the Challenge of the Level of Knowledge of the Guest.
It is "Not" that they Were Not Intelligent...
Quite the Opposite in Fact.
They were Extremely Intelligent and were Making Me Consider Aspects of these Topics More Deeply than I've Ever Considered Before...
They were in the Sage Arena within their Industry, questioning the Norms and what is Accepted...
And Seemingly Successfully...
But because they Could Not Clearly Explain Certain Concepts, it makes it Difficult to Fully Accept.
Without Clarity...
You Will Always Struggle to Be Fully Accepted...
For Your Knowledge...
For Your Abilities...
For Your Place within an Interdependent Society.
Individual Intelligence is Great to Have...
Needed within Your Area of Expertise...
But Alone is Not Extremely Useful.
As Sad as it Sounds...
Our Knowledge is Only as Powerful as Our Ability to Unlock It within an Interdependent System, Clearly.
The More Clearly You Can Explain to a Wider Variety of People...
At a Higher and Higher Level of Complexity...
The More You Begin to Understand Whether You Deeply Understand Something or Not.
Mastery is a Non-Negotiable Starting Point...
But Deep Understanding Expands Beyond Yourself.
True Sages are able to Expand to even the Least Knowledgeable Individuals.
That is the Mark of the Deepest Level of Understanding.
