They are Treated like deities...

They Believe their Hype.

Mere Mortals.

The deity simply Eliminates them for Failing to Understand the Immense Plans that the deity has.

When a Mortal Complains about Not Caring about what the deity is Designing...

The deity simply says that the Mortals are Too Simple to Understand the Value of this New Design.

They Claim that...

Eventually...

The Mortals will Come to Appreciate Everything that the deity Does for Them.

As This Occurs...

The "Mortals" begin to Stop Trusting their Tyrannical Overlords...

Three Groups begin to Form...

Those who Slave Under the deity...

Waiting for the Opportunity to Gain Freedom from their Oppressors.

Those who Fawn Under the deity...

Becoming Sycophants with the Hope that the deity will Show them "Mercy".

Those who Rebel Against the deity...

Unable to Accept the Plans of the False deity any Longer, with a Desire to Create Something Better.

All of these become Problems for the deity...

Their Slaves No Longer Contribute at the same Levels they Used To...

Which Pushes the deity to Drive them Further and Crush Them.

Their Sycophants Feed the deity Everything that the deity Desires...

But None of What the deity Needs.

Their Rebels begin to Gain Power by Focusing on what the deity has Lost Sight Of...

The Mortals.

This Begins to Crack the Visage of the deity...

Their Reign begins to Falter...

But a deity Cannot Accept This...

So the deity Sets About One of Two Paths...

Crush the Rebels...

Or Buy the Rebels.

The Act of Crushing Reveals to the Slaves the True Nature of the deity...

And Causes the Sycophants to become Worse.

The Act of Buying can Work...

Until someone Says No.

Then the deity Attempts to Copy...

Steal...

Mimic...

But they are Now Second to these Rebels...

And if they are Less than these Mortals...

They Cannot be True deities...

And Disappear...

The Natural Course...

Forgotten to Time.
