Honoring The Sacrifice

Memorial Day

In the States, we Celebrate Memorial Day.

It is a Day of Recognizing and Thanking those who have Given their Lives through their Military Service.

Another way to Say this is that We Honor Their Sacrifice.

Now...

The Question I would Pose is this...

How Can We Honor Their Sacrifice?

I Know that Many People are Celebrating today by Relaxing and having Barbecues.

Spending Time with Family.

All of which are Good Ways to Spend the Day.

But is this Truly "Honoring" what they Sacrificed For?

Days of Peace are certainly a "Part" of What they Sacrificed their Lives For...

But I think there is Perhaps Something Far More Important and Far More Critical in Today's World that they Sacrificed For...

The Potential for a Better Future.

There are Many Parts of the World where People Do Not Have Rights...

They are Pawns and Victims of Governments who Deny Them the Ability to Have Any Say in their Futures.

And I Know that there are People who are Highly Critical of the US Government Today...

Both Justified and Unjustified...

Many of them Questioning if the States are Worth Fighting For At All.

I Understand...

And...

I think that Way of Looking at the World Today is a Dishonor to those who have Worked So Hard and Sacrificed their Lives.

Are the States Perfect?

By No Definition Would I Say We Are Perfect...

But what is Incredibly Unique is the Amount of Power and Sway that the People of the US Have...

When We Work Together.

Yes...

We Take Side Steps and Back Steps on the Path to Create a Better Future...

But Those Who Fought and Died Did So in Order to Give Us the "Opportunity" to Create a Better Country and a Better World.

Knowing that they were Limited by their Time, Humanness, and Lack of Foresight...

They Gave Us the Ability to Mold and Shape the Future.

It is Not a Perfect Process...

It is Incredibly Messy at Times...

We Fail in Our Abilities to Empathize and Unite Often...

But that Opportunity to Create Something Better...

An Opportunity that Most People around the World Do Not Have...

That is what was Truly Sacrificed For...

What We Have the Continued Opportunity to Access Today.

But this is what We Must Come to Understand...

This Opportunity will Bear Fruit...

If...

We Continue to Strive for a Better World...

And...

We Continue to Seek Unity.

I think there is a Desire for a Better World...

What I See is a Lack of Unity.

Many Times over the Centuries People have Talked About...

"...these United States."

This is One of the Great Differentiators of the States...

Unity.

Unity that Did Not, and Arguably Still Does Not, Exist in Most of the World.

Most of the World has been Defined, and Still Is Defined, by Its Division and Wars...

But the States are a Place where, Despite Our Many...

Many...

Differences, We Still Found a Way to Come Together Toward Something Better.

When Others Have Sought, and Continue to Seek, to Tear Us Asunder...

Our Unity is what has Allowed Us to Grow.

This is How We can Honor the Sacrifice of those Who Have Given Their Lives...

Find and Keep that Unity.

I Know that is Not Always Easy...

Especially when there are People We Vehemently Disagree With...

Whose Beliefs Seem Diametrically Opposed to Our Own...

Especially in the Face of So Many Tragedies of the Past...

But the Reality is, and Always Will Be, that We Share Far More Similarities than Differences.

We Are All Still Human First.

We have Goals...

Hopes...

Dreams...

Desires to Be a Part of Something Larger than Ourselves...

A Desire for Better Days.

Things which We can Only Obtain When We Find Unity.

I Challenge You Today to Honor the Sacrifice by Seeking that Unity.

So, how do we go about Creating Unity?

It Seems Hard because we are living in a World that has made us Susceptible to Hatred, Deceit, and Manipulation.

But it Does Not “Need” to be Difficult.

Now, the Work to “Achieve” the Goals of that Unity will be Difficult.

But the Initial Process of “Creating” Unity can be Fairly Simple.
