A Tenet Of Natural Healing That Explains Why Businesses Are Struggling Today
Written by a human, for humans, always.
Around 7 years ago...
In my studies of leadership...
I began to notice that something was not right.
The leadership development industry made claims that it was needed to create better leaders, and therefore better businesses...
But that was simply not what I saw in the results.
The vast majority of people in the industry are wonderful human beings...
But the methodologies were fundamentally flawed.
At its height, the industry was worth $350 billion...
While completely failing to produce leaders 80% of the time...
With “limited” success the remainder.
Those results did not make sense to me.
So, I began to research why...
To discover that a significant portion of the problem was psychophysiology.
So, I began to research, get degrees in, and certify in different areas of psychology, physiology, natural health, and functional medicine.
What I discovered dramatically changed my approach to helping clients and businesses...
And my results were significantly better.
Let me explain one tenet of natural healing to help you understand.
See, in a human body...
For healing to occur...
You need three things.
Without them, the body is physically incapable of healing.
What are they?
Stabilization.
Detoxification.
Fortification.
They also have to happen in this order.
If you fail to it in order, then healing will not occur.
For instance...
If you are bleeding out, and you do not stabilize the bleeding...
Then your body is not going to have an opportunity to heal before you bleed to death.
If your body has too many toxins in it, those toxins will continue to cause further damage in the body...
Such as through an infection in an open wound...
Therefore, making any fortification useless until the detoxification occurs.
But, if you stabilize the bleeding...
Clear out the wound of anything that can cause an infection...
Then the body can begin to heal the area, scabbing over, and then fully healing the area.
This is no different in a business.
See...
Most leadership development is focused on building skills...
A form of fortification.
But those skills are useless...
If the organization is dying internally from being de-stable and is in a state of psychophysiological toxicity...
Which is exactly where most businesses are today.
Bleeding out in resources...
Toxically consumed in burnout...
Unable to heal.
You can add all the fortification programs you want to the organizations...
But if resources are bleeding out and burnout is corrosively infecting the organization...
It does not matter.
That organization is dying.
That is also only one example of how this plays out...
There are many different ways that you can have stabilization problems and toxicity issues in an organization.
Early in my corporate career, I worked in an organization where the sales team had a disproportionate level of attention and recognition in the organization...
At the expense of the legal and accounting teams, which were severely understaffed...
A structural imbalance.
The sales team was making deals that had Net 180 terms...
Meaning that services would be provided, but no income would enter into the business...
Another structural problem where resources were bleeding out.
Then on top of that...
The sales team was making deals with these same organizations quarterly, where they would not be required to pay the remainder of their previous bills...
As long as they signed on for another deal.
Do you see the problem here?
The new deals wiped out the “remaining balance”...
Which was still 100% because the new deals were being made in quarters...
But the client didn’t need to pay anything for 6 months...
Meaning the organization was doing work...
Requiring resources...
But making absolutely no money on the deals.
This created a problem where the organization was becoming desperate for income...
But had no idea why they were not making money...
Because the legal team and accounting team were so understaffed that they did not catch this problem...
For a year.
As this was happening...
The organization began to blame the accounting team, especially the accounts receivable team, for the problems...
Which created a hostile work environment...
A form of toxicity.
Can you imagine the amount of damage that occurred over the year this happened?
I was one of three people brought onto the team at that time to “fix” the “accounting” problem...
And I remember the CFO in the first all-hands meeting I went to said, to the whole company, how our team gave him nightmares.
Luckily...
We were able to discover this issue...
I was the one who discovered the Net 180 terms in the contracts...
Brought it to the CFO and Legal team...
Discovered this one (of many) sources of bleeding...
Stabilized it...
Allowing us to help people understand the value of the accounting team...
Beginning the process of detoxifying the organization...
Which then allowed us to really develop dramatically quickly as an organization.
The way that this plays out in organizations is different.
But the tenet works exactly the same.
Still...
It goes further than this.
Why?
Because the problems do not exist at just the organizational level...
But also at the individual level.
When we, as individuals, are in burnout...
Our productivity potential drops to 5% or less...
And we can, and frequently do, go into negative productivity.
It is bad enough when you have an individual in burnout...
But it gets exponentially worse when it becomes group burnout.
The point, however...
Is that when the individuals are struggling on various levels...
Then inevitably...
This will also end up flowing to the organizational level.
It is inevitable.
This is a large part of why so many organizations are struggling today.
Both at the individual level and the organizational level...
They are destabilized and toxified.
They are not capable of being fortified because of this...
And all of the resources utilized to fortify become wasted...
Making the problems worse.
If you want to heal a business...
You must look at healing both the business and the individuals...
Which is only possible if you can successfully stabilize and detoxify first.
