A Different Approach To Reaching Your Goals
Written by a human, for humans, always.
How much is needed for you to attain your goals?
It might be a little...
It might be a tremendous amount...
In either case, the likely answer is more than you can give in any singular moment.
Most goals require time to attain.
How much time varies...
But time nevertheless.
One of the things that I see from many people when it comes to attaining goals...
And which I struggle with myself from time to time...
Is feeling like you have enough to give in any single moment.
Even if you tried...
Would it be enough?
This question and line of thinking...
Is actually a gigantic problem and flaw in our mindset.
Here’s a counter-question to consider...
What does “enough” even mean?
See...
There is a fundamental error when we are considering whether we have “enough”...
And that error is known as all-or-nothing thinking.
See...
“Enough” is a term that simply implies that there is a border...
And if we can reach beyond that border, we act...
And if we cannot, then we will not act.
We either put all of ourselves into it at that moment...
Or none of ourselves...
Based on whether we believe, in the moment, whether we can reach “enough”.
There are multiple problems with that when it comes to reaching our goals.
First...
Is that for most people, “enough” is a nebulous border...
One which shifts and changes depending on a variety of factors...
Most of which are subjective...
Especially in the moment we are asking the question.
What does this mean?
That we will be more likely to make a decision based on factors that may or may not be relevant in the long term...
And based purely on the average of human behavior...
Means that we will choose not to take action.
When that border of “enough” has the ability to shift...
It usually shifts in favor of “not” moving toward our goals.
That is the simple reality that most people do not realize.
However, there are other factors we fail to consider.
For instance...
Habits.
What happens when we make a decision, one way or another?
The next time we come to a similar decision, we are more likely to make the same decision.
This is simply how the body is designed.
Our bodies will look for paths that “worked” in the past and optimize communication pathways to continue to utilize that same strategy.
So one day we choose not to move forward...
Then another day...
And another...
Then suddenly we look back and wonder how we strayed so far from our goals.
Another factor we fail to consider...
Is the Flow State.
We may not feel like we have “enough” at this very moment...
But that is based on a limited perspective of what we believe is possible...
Usually when we feel our worst.
But...
Often by beginning to do something...
We can unlock a flow state...
Which makes us vastly more capable than we thought possible before the flow state.
What may have seemed nearly impossible before...
Suddenly becomes inevitable...
Often exceeding what we believed we could do.
When I started this article...
I was thinking that I would struggle to hit my minimum...
But now I have exceeded 500 words, and I am not yet at the end of what there is to say.
The point is...
We, as humans, are usually pretty terrible at judging what we are capable of accomplishing in the moment...
And when we make a decision in the moment based on a nebulous border that we perceive as being further than it likely is in reality...
We almost always will choose against moving toward our goals...
And the most likely scenario...
Is that we will struggle or never actually attain the end goal...
Because we will continuously fail to do “enough” to ever get there.
So what can we do?
Take a different approach.
Instead of questioning whether you have “enough” to give...
Make a decision to simply give whatever you are able to in that moment.
Do not judge yourself.
Do not even worry about how much is likely...
Because, as was already mentioned, we are terrible at estimating that as humans.
Simply...
Start.
Begin.
Do something.
Even if it feels incredibly tiny.
Even if you question whether it really is going to move the needle.
Just give it what you’re able to.
What you will discover...
Is that if you simply start...
You will often get further in that moment than you believed possible.
If you continue to give what you can...
You will begin to build a habit around moving toward your goal.
This will also develop your skills and abilities around what you are aiming toward...
Which will then help you move faster toward the goal.
Plus...
You never have to question whether or not you have enough or if you feel like it.
The decision is already made.
You stop wasting time and energy on debating whether you have “enough”...
And instead utilize that time and energy to actually make progress.
It becomes incredibly liberating when you stop asking yourself whether you have something in you or not...
And start just acting toward it...
Giving yourself more and more evidence that you indeed are capable of moving toward the goal...
Instead of continuing to accumulate evidence against yourself.
There is an incredible freedom that can be obtained when we stop doubting ourselves.
Our thoughts can often work against us...
But we can quickly silence those thoughts with proof and evidence of action.
All you need to do...
Is stop asking the question.
Just make a decision to begin taking action now.
No matter how much or little it feels like in that moment.
The amount is not what matters.
All that matters...
Is that you act.
Some days you may be able to give more...
Others, it will be less.
Either way you win...
Because you are giving what you can...
And continuing to make progress toward your goals.
