Finding The Timing
Speed Versus Depth And Which Is Actually Better
One of the most difficult tensions to navigate in life...
Has to do with the timing of growth.
Specifically...
Speed versus depth.
Should we be pushing our growth faster to spread further?
Or should we be aiming for depth in our growth?
When you look at agriculture, we see both of these types of strategies play out.
What we often call “weeds” are plants that spread quickly...
But have little depth to them.
Then there is a different spectrum where there is incredible depth, but slow timing...
Such as what we see with trees.
What method is right?
Should we be aiming for one or the other?
And perhaps importantly...
Why?
Most people will try to give a definitive answer to this...
Saying something like...
“Speed is the name of the game”...
Or...
“Deep roots allow you to weather any storm”...
But which path is the right path?
The answer is...
It depends.
It depends on what you’re doing...
The type of work or life you live...
And so many other factors that are incredibly important to understand.
Both Weeds and Trees thrive in different contexts...
Though their methods are extremely different...
They both find ways to thrive.
We are no different in this context.
Some aspects of life or times in life require us to act quickly and spread...
In education, it is generally considered wise to learn a breadth of topics to discover where your strengths are, which is a speed approach.
When it comes to being recognized as an Expert or Sage in an industry, it becomes important to have a depth of knowledge that you can rely on incredibly well.
But some jobs do not require extreme depth to master, and organizations that rely on these types of jobs may want to train up a large workforce and spread quickly to amass things like followings and momentum.
However, in some industries, people fall into a trap of moving too quickly and become blindsided by the signs and lack of information that could have informed them earlier of the problems that would occur.
Some opportunities you will never see again...
And some opportunities are disguised to be “limited” when the reality is that we see them frequently.
We are so quick to try to create a dichotomy that does not exist...
A False Dichotomy.
Speed and Depth both have importance...
Sometimes you need more of one...
Other times, you need more of the other.
If you rely too much on Speed, you may never find enough roots in anything and become doomed to flounder in everything.
If you rely too much on Depth, you may miss many incredible opportunities because you act too slowly.
When we begin to look more closely at our lives...
We will find that the truth is we need both Speed and Depth.
Some parts of our lives will require incredible Speed...
And others necessity incredible Depth.
We often begin to feel more comfortable in one or the other way of timing...
But that can easily become a trap of our comfort zone.
What we need to learn to understand is that the timing can and will change.
It is not a matter of asking which is better...
It is a matter of which is needed at which time.
It is not something you will master overnight...
But if you want to have the highest levels of success in life...
It becomes important to learn the merits of each form of timing...
And where and how they work best.
