Carrying A Leadership Legacy Of Division Yet Pushing For Unity

The Death Of Pope Francis

Today, Pope Francis has passed away.

I'm not Catholic, but I have been around the Catholic Faith for much of my life.

When I was Young, I never had a deep interest in the Catholic Church.

I had thought that it was a bit Pompous for much of my youth.

I had been to many Masses, Study Groups, and even Youth Events with the Catholic Church through Friends.

It always felt...

Out of Touch.

Then, there was the Corruption of Leaders who did Terrible Things Brought to Light.

This did Not Help my Perception.

Now, to be Fair, I also only had a small grasp of everything that the Catholic Church had been through over the Centuries, and knew Little of the History.

Yet, there was something that always worried me about All Christianity...

Division.

"...Every kingdom divided against itself is heading for ruin; and no town, no household divided against itself can stand." - Matthew 12:25 JB

Everywhere I looked, I saw this playing out in the Christian Faiths.

Individual Organizations that seemed to prefer to Attack Each Other rather than Fight the Darkness in the World.

When I got to University, this was only made worse.

I went to a Catholic University, where there were Clear Undertones that if you were Not Catholic then You were Heathen.

I watched groups who Argued and Squabbled in Ivory Towers over Topics of Relatively Little to No Significance...

While Real People Struggled with Real Darkness and Challenges.

My Classes Revealed that this has been the Norm.

For Hundreds Upon Hundreds of Years.

Fracturing Here and Fracturing There.

In-Fighting Between Individuals who Claimed to Worship the same God.

Often, while Leaders Committed Horrible Crimes...

And Ignoring the Pain of those who Needed it Most.

I could see Why So Many People have lost Faith over the Years.

I Struggled to Find Hope Myself.

When it came to the Catholic Faith, there have only ever been Two Individuals who Gave Me Hope that, possibly, we could see Unity despite the Differences.

The First was Saint Francis of Assisi.

It was Saint Francis' Teachings that allowed me to Appreciate the Good that Does Exist in the Catholic Church.

He lived in a Time when the Catholic Church ran similarly to a Tyrannical Monarchy.

People were losing Faith in the Church.

Real Humans were Suffering while Corruption Ruled in Many Regions.

Then, a Maverick decides to Renounce the Riches he was Born Into...

Began to Rebuild the Church, literally by Hand.

Refusing Money and Accepting only Food to Eat and Stones to Build.

Walking Without Shoes.

Serving those Most In Need...

The Poor...

The Sick...

The Forgotten...

The Hated...

Even Nature...

He was a Revolutionary of the time.

Much as Jesus was in His Time.

Much to the Chagrin of Many Catholic Priests at the time...

Saint Francis Rose to Extreme Popularity.

He Renewed Faith in People.

People Followed out of Respect instead of Fear.

He is, without doubt, one of the Most Loved and Hated Saints for his Deeds.

He Inspired Hope in Me.

Then, also while in University, something else Occurred...

Pope Benedict XVI Stepped Down from his Role.

The First Pope in approximately 600 Years to do so.

It Sparked a Lot of Interest, especially on a Catholic Campus.

Then it was Announced who the Next Pope would be...

He took the Name...

Pope Francis.

After the same Saint Francis of Assisi who Inspired Me.

Now, Pope Francis was Different.

He was the First Non-European Pope in nearly 1300 Years.

First Jesuit Pope.

First Latin American Pope.

First to Pick a Name After a Famously Controversial Saint.

Handed a Legacy that was Not Dissimilar to the Saint whose Name he Chose...

A Time where the Wealth of the Catholic Church was in Question...

Where the Church was said to be Out of Touch with the Struggles of those they Supposedly Served...

Filled with Corruption that was Being Brought to Light...

Where Businesses Held Extreme Power over the Livelihoods of People...

Where the Divides were Growing.

None of this would be Easy for Any Leader to Face.

Yet, I saw a Man who Faced the Challenges Boldly.

Who Rebuked the Maltreatment of People, but in a Loving Manner.

Who Refused the Niceties he was Given to Live Humbly.

Who Sought to Build Bridges of Hope Everywhere He Could.

Between Other Christians...

Between Other Abrahamic Faiths...

Between the Secular and Spiritual Worlds...

Everywhere he went, he Tried to Bring Unity and Mend the Division.

He Called for Everyone to Serve...

The Poor...

The Sick...

The Forgotten...

The Hated...

Even Nature...

He Strived to Heal a Sick World.

There are People Who Did Not Agree with Everything that Pope Francis Did...

He was Controversial...

Just as Saint Francis of Assisi was...

Just as Jesus was...

But Pope Francis gave me Hope in the Idea of a United World.

It is Very Interesting...

In the History of the Church, the Apostles who were Crucified All Asked for it to be done in a Manner Different from Christ...

They said they were Unworthy of Sharing the Same Fate as Jesus.

Similarly, it seems to me that Pope Francis held onto Life until After Easter...

As if he wanted to make sure that We Focused on Christ and the Resurrection.

As if he, too, believed himself Unworthy of Sharing the Same Fate as Jesus.

A Passing Worthy of One Who Kept Himself Humble.

I am Deeply Saddned that the world has Lost a Leader and a Soul who Truly Cared about Improving the World...

Who Dedicated Themselves to being an Exemplar of their Beliefs.

Who had the Courage to Disagree and Be Disagreed with on Important Matters...

Who had the Heart to Seek Unity where Others Failed.

I Hope that Pope Francis will be Canonized as a Saint over the Coming Years.

I Believe that the Miracles will Come.

I Hope that His Work and Legacy Continue to Inspire People to Change the World...

To Heal the World.
