Are You Truly Ready For That?

A Thought To Consider Going Into The New Year

As the New Year comes around...

Faster than most people are ready for...

Many, including perhaps you, are about to engage in the age-old tradition...

Of New Year’s Resolutions.

And I already know...

That there is a high likelihood that your resolutions are big...

Perhaps huge.

I get it...

You want big changes in your life...

Whatever those changes are.

But I have an honest question for you...

Not meant to dissuade you from change...

Rather designed to help you change for the better.

Are you truly ready for that?

You are capable of change...

But perhaps not ready for the specific change you ask.

It’s not “you” personally...

Rather, it is that the norm is that most people desire a change they are not ready for.

How do I know?

Statistics.

Less than 10% of people actually stick to their New Year’s Resolutions.

Why?

Most people are not ready for the change they seek.

“You do not know what you are asking.” - Matthew 20:22

Here’s the reality...

All change...

Even “positive” changes...

Are stressors.

That is something that most people do not realize.

We are often taught to think that “positive” changes exactly that...

Positive.

So, we have this unconscious belief that positive things will just go...

Positively.

But how does that work out for most people?

It doesn’t.

Again, not because change is not possible...

But because they are not ready for the change they are asking for...

At least not yet...

Because the stress caused by the change they are seeking is too much for them to handle.

The inevitable result of this...

Is that you will fail.

Perhaps you will not quit after the first failure...

But nearly 25% of people will quit after the first failure in the first week of January.

Then...

About another 25% of people will quit by the end of January.

Because the change they seek causes too much stress for them to handle...

And because we are human...

And hate to fail...

Especially repeatedly...

We eventually give up.

But again...

This is not an “inability” to change...

It is just that most people are not yet ready for the level of change they are asking for.

For instance...

If you want to lose weight...

If you’ve never learned how or accomplished losing 10 lbs. in your life...

How do you expect to lose 100 lbs.?

If you’ve never kept off that weight in the past...

How do you expect to keep off that weight now?

Can you lose 100 lbs. and keep it off?

Yes.

It has been done by people.

But if “you” have not lost 5 lbs. and kept it off in your life yet...

Then you do not yet really understand, from personal experience, what it means to lose 100 lbs. and keep it off.

Just look at the long-term results of contestants from the TV Show “The Biggest Loser”.

There is a significant number of them, including those who won their seasons of the show...

Who not only gain back weight...

But some of them gain “more” weight than they had prior to the show.

Why?

The show helped them lose a “lot” of weight quickly...

But did not really reveal to them how to “keep” it off...

And because they lacked the experience of how to keep weight off...

It eventually came back.

What it revealed is that they really were not ready for the weight loss they experienced...

Nor were they ready to keep it off...

Because there are different sets of skills that are required to lose weight and maintain weight...

And when we do not know how to create and maintain habits...

The eventual result is that we fall back on our old habits...

Which creates the results they originally had.

So...

As we go into the New Year...

Consider this..

Are you truly ready for that resolution that you are making?

Or are you trying to bite off more than you’re ready for?

Perhaps...

Your best option is to start smaller...

And master that...

So that eventually you “can” have the change you seek.

Learn to crawl before you try to sprint...

To gain the life that you are seeking.
