Are You Actually Growing?
Understanding When Learning Is Helping Or Harming On The Journey To Sageship
Written by a human, for humans, always.
I am a huge fan of personal development.
Not just because I enjoy it personally...
But because as I have studied human psychophysiology...
I understand that we, as humans, have an innate desire to grow and cultivate ourselves.
We are actually happier and live a better life when we do.
Indeed...
I’ve done a lot of programs over the years.
I have over 20 post-nominals that I have earned (i.e., DFM, DNM, etc.)...
Some of which have learning requirements to maintain...
More certifications than those...
And other courses that I’ve done over the years.
Now...
Does anyone “need” all of those to have a successful career?
Absolutely not.
In fact, you do not even need a single post-nominal in your name to gain tremendous success.
Many have.
Does everyone “need” to grow to have success in life?
Absolutely.
There are real legitimate questions that come up, though, that you have to take into consideration as you grow...
Are you actually growing?
Is all the learning you are doing helping you?
Or is all of your learning actually harming you?
You have to ask these questions...
Because there are individuals who have done many different degrees, courses, and certifications...
Similar to me...
But really never make any progress in their careers or life.
No matter how many different types of learning they do...
They never really get anywhere.
So what is it that gets in their way?
Why is it that some people with fewer learning experiences get further...
And some with significantly more never seem to actually grow in their life or career?
The answer has to do with what you do with what you learn.
See...
For many people...
They get degrees, certifications, and take courses because they feel that they are not enough...
There is a belief, conscious or subconscious, that maybe when they get the “next” thing...
That they will finally be enough.
So they take a course...
They get a certificate...
Go back to school for another degree...
But each time they still feel like they are not enough.
What is happening is that they are using education as a crutch to not change.
The result...
Is that they may never feel ready...
And they create a habit in their mindset and beliefs that repeats the same pattern of never being enough.
On the other hand...
Real growth requires action and application.
Learning it is not enough.
You need to live it.
Use it.
Either in your life, with clients, or with a team.
Then begin to understand it at levels that can only be understood by doing.
There is a reason that many people do not feel like they know enough...
Because you really only learn by doing.
Taking the courses and getting the degrees and certifications are a great place to start...
But the actual learning happens when you begin to live what you learn...
Only there will you find real growth.
If you are learning and not doing...
Then all of your education is actually hindering you...
You are not truly growing.
It is like learning how to throw a ball while your arm is kept in a cast.
You might know the theory and even have a detailed understanding of the physiological mechanics at play...
But you are not actually throwing the ball...
And as long as your arm is in a cast, you’ll never develop the muscles to be able to throw the ball in reality.
You’ll never feel ready because the feeling of being ready only happens after we get enough real doing in our lives.
Here is the thing, however...
When you begin doing...
You can actually begin to create an amazing effect by continuing to learn.
Why have I taken so many courses and gotten so many different degrees and certifications in my life?
Because I am adapting and discovering little differences, similarities, and connections that exist “between” different things.
I am not learning because I do not feel like I know enough in my life...
I am continuing to learn to attempt to piece together things that no one has ever done before.
I actively go through courses, frequently disagreeing with different teachers I have had...
Not because they are bad teachers or even that they are inherently “wrong”...
But because there are gaps that they have which I can fill in from what I have experienced...
Both in my life and with my clients.
There is almost always something that I still learn in every course, certification, and degree I pursue...
But much of it is fine-tuning and getting different perspectives as opposed to feeling like I am lacking.
Occasionally, I do different programs because I have a true lack of knowledge or experience...
However, I am sure to apply it as quickly as I’m able...
Then I further make it my own, informed by everything else that I know...
Until I begin to gain insights that were never taught to me in a classroom.
That is the real gap that most people have when it comes to learning...
They never make it their own.
They see themselves as purely a student...
When mastery requires you to be doing the craft...
And Sageship requires you to go further than others have to begin to understand what could never be taught.
Growth only happens in doing the work...
In reality, not in theory alone.
No course, certification, or degree provides you with mastery...
Only experience can do that.
Sageship is not something that can be obtained in a classroom...
It can only be discovered where no teacher has ever been before...
By understanding what there currently is to know...
Questioning it...
Doubting it...
Testing it...
Then moving beyond it all until you truly have insights that others do not.
Only in this way can your learning truly help you.
Only in this way can you truly grow in life.
Start growing.
