Are All Courses Useless?
Looking At The Reality Around Courses
I was reading through a news email today that I get...
And they had a section on advice from entrepreneurs.
As an entrepreneur...
I’m always curious to see what people say.
The first one that I saw was specifically about advice that is “B.S.,” and it said this...
“Courses. All of them. You can’t learn to swim by reading. The same applies to building something.”
Now...
That works really well as a punchy marketing hit...
But is it true?
As someone who has gotten a doctorate degree...
And has taken many courses over the years...
I think it is fair to say that I have some experience in this matter.
But first...
I want to tell you a fun story.
When I saw the idea about not being able to learn to swim by reading...
It took me back to my youth.
I’ve done many different sports over the years...
Two of which were swimming and diving.
Now, I was never a “fast” swimmer...
But I could do a butterfly stroke before I was 10 years old...
So I had a pretty good ability to swim.
But do you know the one thing that I could not do to save my life?
Float.
Something that most people can just “do” without thinking.
I had many swimming instructors attempt to teach me...
But not a single one could do it.
I could literally do any swimming stroke...
For as long as I needed to swim...
I even got my lifeguard certification...
But I still couldn’t float.
Every time I attempted to float...
I would begin to sink underwater like a rock.
It was the one thing in the water that I could not figure out...
And no instructor I had could help me.
It took me until high school to finally discover the secret to floating...
And do you know where I found it?
In a book.
Specifically, the Boy Scout Handbook.
In a single sentence...
Was the one thing that I had been missing for years...
That not a single instructor could help me figure out.
Since I learned that...
I have been able to float in water.
Now, why do I bring this up?
Reading in this situation revealed the fundamental thing that I could not figure out from just doing...
And which no instructors were able to figure out either.
So perhaps I did not learn to swim from a book...
But I did learn to float.
Does this then answer our question?
You “can” learn from courses?
Well, it is not so simple.
I have taken many courses over the years...
Far more than I remember...
And the person who said that courses are B.S.?
Is not completely wrong.
Most courses are not really beneficial.
For the many courses that I have taken that provided a firm foundation for much of my work...
There are many courses that I have taken that were useless.
Some would call them a waste of money...
I would call them lessons in understanding how to see and determine what is or is not valuable in a course.
One of the things that is valuable...
Is either learning how to apply it during the course...
Or having an easy way to apply it alongside the course.
But...
This is part of the problem.
Most courses that exist do not actually provide useful ways to apply the material...
Only theoretical ways...
Which either never apply to reality...
Or are infrequent and therefore are not practiced...
Which means that they are not ready to be used in the right circumstances.
The result is that most courses, especially in business, are indeed useless.
I came across this problem early in my career.
There was something that I knew was not connecting in “Leadership Development”...
And the answer came in a simple statistic.
At its height, the Leadership Development Industry was making $350 billion per year...
While “completely” failing 80% of the time...
With “limited” success, the remainder.
Why?
One of the reasons...
But not the “sole” reason...
Was that most Leadership Development courses never had the ability to be applied...
Or there were a variety of factors that prevented the lessons from being applied successfully...
Especially various aspects of human psychophysiology.
That discovery is why I say I no longer “do” Leadership Development...
And why I began to focus on learning the deep aspects of psychophysiology...
Discovering the many ways that our human psychophysiology actively prevents us from attaining our goals in business and life.
So, when this person made the claim that all business courses were useless...
I understood why.
However...
We need to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater as well.
Are most courses that exist useless?
Yes.
But there are some courses that are incredibly helpful...
That go beyond just teaching...
And become transformational.
This is also one of the reasons why having a well-qualified coach can be incredibly beneficial.
They will be able to help you get the right lessons that you need...
At the time that you need them...
Giving you the ability to apply those lessons...
And being able to aid you in deciphering what is actively preventing you from making progress...
So that you attain real transformation in your life.
In my work, I call this the difference between “Training” and “Cultivation”.
Training looks at everyone like they are the same...
And give the same lesson to everyone...
Expecting everyone to function exactly the same.
Cultivation, on the other hand, looks at everyone as unique...
And seeks to provide the proper resources at the proper times so that each individual may flourish to their full potential.
Just as different plants require different types of soil, sustenance, and timing...
So, too, do we each have different requirements at different times.
If we get high-quality courses and lessons...
At the time that we need them...
In ways that we can immediately utilize...
Then we can have transformational changes occur in our lives.
It is possible.
