Facing Hopeless Situations
Written by a human, for humans, always.
Why should I?
What is the point?
Will it make a difference?
Will it even matter?
These are the types of questions we begin to ask ourselves when we lose hope.
When we feel like we are pressed against insurmountable odds.
When it all feels...
Futile.
It is something that we begin to face when we stare into the abyss...
To discover it staring back at us.
Indeed...
The act of looking into the darkness...
Can be such an unsettling event that it causes good people to turn away.
There is a problem with this, however...
For evil spreads when good people do nothing.
At the same time...
We must be wary about how we act...
For when one sets out to fight monsters...
They often...
Without realizing it...
Become monsters themselves.
Our sense of morality seems to disappear when we justify our actions in the cause of defeating these monsters we see.
So what are we to do?
When it seems that every action has danger...
And that to do what is right...
Truly right...
Is hopeless...
Futile?
An act in futility.
We tend to think that doing something in this manner is useless.
That it is an act “of” futility.
But this is not really the case.
There is a significant difference between...
An act “of” futility...
And...
An act “in” futility.
The former is an act which is, in itself, useless...
Choosing to do nothing...
Choosing to take monstrous actions that spread evil further.
But the latter...
It is something else entirely.
It is to do the right thing for the right reasons...
Even if the circumstances that surround us seem futile.
That is the keyword to understand...
Seem.
What the abyss hopes for...
Is that you fall for the idea that it “seems” futile to do the right thing against it.
That is a trap...
That you will submit to it...
Either by allowing it to consume you...
Or by becoming a tool from which it spreads out further.
But this is not the truth.
The truth...
Is that every action has a reaction.
To reveal true light...
True goodness...
In a world that has become a quagmire of darkness...
Becomes undeniable.
Unsettling to those who see it.
It casts a light of truth into who they have been...
How they have acted or failed to act...
And forces them to turn their gaze from the abyss...
To confront the light.
It loosens the grip of hypnotism that has beset them...
To see that it is possible...
To act in goodness...
Even in the circumstances the seem absolutely and all consumingly futile.
That is not something that can be ignored.
It leaves a mark...
An impression...
One that becomes far more powerful when one has been trapped in the gaze of the abyss.
But what most people fail to understand...
Is that this form of impact...
Is not something that always creates shattering change...
Though it can happen.
Far more often, it is more like a seed...
One that needs time to take root within the heart of those who see it.
It needs to be watered...
It needs time for the light to help it grow.
That is all the more reason why it becomes important to act in futility...
Because it is not really futile...
Unless you act in such a way that allows the abyss to take you.
So go on...
Act in futility.
