2 Years Running Every Single Day (Mostly Barefoot)
Why I Continue On The Journey Of My Run Streak
Written by a human, for humans, always.
Today marks 2 years...
Of running at least one mile...
Every single day...
Mostly barefoot.
I say “mostly” because there are only two reasons I do not run barefoot...
I’m traveling in an unfamiliar place...
Or I’m racing.
But even on those days, I run in “barefoot shoes”...
No arch support...
Thin and flexible soles...
No cushion...
Zero Drop, meaning completely flat...
Wide toe box...
All of which allows my feet to move as naturally as possible with protection from unknown elements.
Every single day, I run like this.
I have gone distances as far as 32 miles.
I even do obstacle course races like this.
According to my Garmin Watch, which I got when I began running daily...
I have totaled 1,500 miles.
Why?
To make a point of what we, as humans, are capable of.
In my work...
I study deep aspects of psychophysiology...
Seeking to understand how to unlock human potential...
Helping clients do that in their lives and work.
But here’s the thing...
People usually have no idea of what they are capable of...
Simply by being a human.
Most of the world...
Sees our limitations...
Or faults...
Our weaknesses...
And focuses so much on all of these...
So much so...
That we begin to believe that these are all we are capable of.
It is a side effect of the Repetition Bias or Illusory Truth Effect...
Where we hear something so often...
We begin to believe it is true...
Even if it is false.
The world is absolutely consumed in what makes us limited...
And if you look at the overall trends...
This hyper-focus on the lowest aspects...
Has actually been a contributing factor in the decline of “human average”.
What this means...
Is that “on average”, people are becoming weaker and sicker...
Even if that is not what the average “should” be in humans.
What we become in life...
Is often deeply influenced by what we expect to happen.
If we expect to become weaker and sicker...
Then it is vastly more likely we will.
I started running every day...
Most barefoot...
To prove...
Through action and real-life evidence and not just theory...
That we are capable of so much more.
If you break down my numbers...
I am averaging about 2 miles per day...
Which, on my slowest days...
Is less than 30 minutes of jogging.
Now, my fastest mile since I began this run streak was 6 minutes and 15 seconds...
But that is not what I normally run.
Most days, I jog between 9 and 12-minute miles.
What so many people miss in life...
Is the power of compound effects.
You do not need to go all-out every day to gain incredible results.
Small efforts, consistently, create incredible results.
My goal is to reveal how powerful it is.
I do not have a desire to be the best in the world...
Only to prove what we are all capable of.
When we begin to believe we are capable of more...
We begin to do more...
Which, when done consistently...
Unlocks worlds of possibilities for us.
I have to say...
It’s incredible to live it out as well.
What is perhaps even more amazing to me...
Is seeing others pursue their potential.
My efforts have inspired my mom and my two younger siblings...
Ages 56, 16, and 14...
To do an obstacle course race with me.
5 kilometers (3.1 miles) with 20 obstacles...
And they were all incredible.
I have a client who has gone on to do the New York Marathon.
I have another client who is pursuing becoming one of the best rowers in the nation...
Despite not being the “right build”, and they are crushing it.
Mind you, I coach these individuals primarily in their businesses...
But I am very well aware that our physical health directly impacts our ability to think clearly and effectively...
So I always work on different areas of psychophysiology with clients...
Which not only allows them to thrive in their businesses and work...
But also allows them to thrive in every other aspect of their lives.
This is what drives me to run every day...
Knowing that by doing it and proving what is possible...
Others may be inspired to do amazing things in their lives.
We are capable of so much more than we realize...
If only we take a bit of time...
To consistently work toward something great.
